It has been very frustrating to be facing a total dearth of information on my grndfather's early life, while at the same time having good information on him from age 20 or so to his death in 1918. Nobody in my family, I am convinced, had any knowledge of his birth parents; I only learned of it by accident myself. His birthday was given, on the 1911 census of Wetaskiwin, as December 1881. I therefore never bothered to check the 1881 census, but when I eventually did I was astounded to find a Tracy Gilbert in the Thomas Walker family. This, and one other source that I found in a Beatty family tree is the only place the name Gilbert shows up as his last name. Hi name everywhere after that is listed as Tracy Lawrence Walker. Hezekiah Gilbert, his birth father, eventually did marry Mary A.M. Beatty in 1885, but never claimed Tracy as their first child. This, despite the fact that the Gilberts and Thomas Walker's family both lived near Stanton in Mulmur twp, probably from 1880 to 1901 at least and would certainly have known each other.
