Hi Ruth, Yes, I didn't mention it because in some of the comments following the "re-jigging" of the Rootsweb list manager seemed to indicate there was now an option which would allow attachments. (I believe I remember Muriel mentioning "Paper-clips" on some messages, plus her recent warning not to accept PDFs.) Since I had no personal interests in receiving messages with attachments from Rootsweb I didn't bother to follow up on it, and live in blissful ignorance of the facts. Consequently, I thought it best to leave that particular stone unturned. :-) However, PDF files are so useful in all sorts of ways, I thought it better to try and get the facts straight before another urban myth was borne. Also, rereading what I wrote before, perhaps I should add that while the PDF format CAN be made to contain "active content," it would not be a hackers "first choice" of a vehicle to carry "mall-ware," so the risks from accepting PDF files are very low. It's still better to make sure you trust the source though. Incidentally, and I don't want to start up a whole new subject - please! - but the issue of catching something nasty from ANY attachment is almost unknown in Mac computers running the Mac OS. The ***** (words fail) who generate the "mall-ware" go for the percentages and so write them to attack the Windows OS. Since Apple started producing Intel Mac's recently I understand that, if you run a Windows OS on your Mac then it will be just as vulnerable as any PC. So it would be wise to avoid using any communications Apps on the Windows side - or to load up on all the protection stuff PC users need. (Incidentally we use both PCs and Mac's in our business - but the PCs don't get to go out and play on the net! :-) ) Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc.
