I am looking for someone who can offer information about my great grandfather, Hezekiah Gilbert, born 31 May, 1860, in Osprey Twp, father William Gilbert, mother Jerusha Beazer both born and married in England. Hezekiah married Mary Anne McLean Beatty in 1885, but they had a child, my grandfather, Tracy Gilbert, born out of wedlock in 1880, at Stanton, Mulmur Twp. Tracy changed, or had changed, his surname, to Walker sometime after 1880, and appears on the 1901 Census of Mulmur as Tracey Walker, living with the John Ewing family, not far from Stanton. As far as I know, he never lived with his birth parents, though they were married and living close by and eventually had several more children. Instead, he was raised by his great uncle, Thomas Walker and wife Margaret, claimed them as his parents and took their surname. He appears on later census listings as Tracy Lawrence Walker and died in 1918 at Wetaskiwin AB. As far as I know, his birthname of Gilbert was not known to any of my immediate family, and all of his children -- my mother, aunts and uncle -- are now deceased. I would dearly like to know more about the facts of his birth, adoption and early life in Mulmur. Tracy Walker
Good Morning: The 1881 Census shows Tracy Gilbert living with Thomas Walker and family and clearly the name Gilbert was used. The Ontario birth records through Ancestry.ca did not show anything recorded under Gilbert, Beatty or Walker. Mary-Ann was only 15 when Tracy was born and 1881 Census shows her as a student, while Hezikiah was 5 years older. You show Tracey's middle name as Lawrence, however the 1911 Census in Alberta shows "G" as his initial. Perhaps the adoption process was underway in 1881 and that is why subsequent documents show Tracy as Walker. There should be an adoption record and enough time has passed that it would be available... I think. Cheers!
