Paul: As an onlooker and eavesdropper on the likeable Simcoe list, I've often enjoyed your ....er...um....musings. Glad to hear that Ruth is doing well, and that you are also. At the risk of Muriel (and Mike More) shutting me out, I do have a question. Why would colour blindness allow one into the WWII Navy more easily than to the Air Force? Huh? Remember the old Navy principle: "port light red, starboard light green"? (Meaning 'heads up' if you see red and green lights - or either - approaching your ship at night on a dark ocean from either one strange vessel or several ). The jocular, morbid sailors' rhyme went somewhat like this: "If you see red across your bow, Steer to starboard and do it now. If it's green you chance to spot, Ease to port and worry not. But if you see both red and green, Pray like Hell, and steer between......." Cheers. And Muriel - I'll try to be good henceforth, if I don't have to try too hard. Max .... Figured that somebody would ask the question ! Brother JIM had an off-setting talent . he was a STENO , master of the typewriter, and an accomplished writer in his own right. Didn't make it to sea until February 1944, but was the Secretary to the Commander, a Capt McKay, of the Canadian Minesweeper Fleet. Aboard the Flagship, H.M.C.S. THUNDER, they saw service on D-DAY and swept the Brest Harbour, under the German Guns, in preparation of the American Cruisers flattening the town. Couldn't tell red from green , but made Chief-Petty-Officer-Writer, by time he was discharged, in May 1946. But he got to fly, later in his career. Retired as a Vice-President of Canadian Pacific Airlines, Operations, in 1979. Thanks for asking !!!!!!!
