Love these discussions that emulate from "Questions Asked" on this board. Altho' I have never seen it in Simcoe County, has anyone ever noticed that so many old Settlers Homes, in New England, in particular Vermont, have TWO ADJACENT FRONT DOORS ???? The first time that I saw it, I thought that it was odd ........... but when it turn up, many times, I took the trouble to ask, and find out !!!! "Son, the one door was for the Family, and opens into the kitchen .. the routine place of Family Gathering " ........ My informant continued, " The Second Door opens into the Parlour, for entertaining Guests, Dignitaries, and receiving Mourners, and other Town Folk, for Family WAKES, and Funerals. " Another, very important use for the second door, was discovered, very early !!!!!!! The Family could escape out one door, while Indians on the war-path, were coming in the other door :-) Paul Robins
