    3. I have the papers of a relative who enlisted in 1916 & then after 6 months in the service was discharged as medically unfit & then erroneously was called back up in 1918 & medically discharged in 1918. So it does happen Bonnie

    3. Similar story with my grandfather. He enlisted in 1914 and was discharged in 1917 due to chronic appendicitis, which he was unwilling to have operated on (given the survival rate at the time, who can blame him). He was drafted in early 1918 and shipped overseas, seeing action in France before the end of the war. He ended up with two serial numbers and a rather disjointed set of papers.

    3. What was the survival rate at that time? I have someone who died of "appendicitis" and her husband who died a year later of cancer of the appendix because he refused to have the operation that killed his wife (so the family legend goes). You may have just provided an important clue to solving this mystery.
