    3. To quote a post of by a teacher of French on August 24/09 from Rootsweb's Quebec-Research list I offer the following: "The word "dit" is an adjective that modifies the person's surname. If the person is male, it should be written in the masculine "dit", such as my 6g-grandfather, Joseph-Jacques Payant dit Saintonge; if the person is female, it should be written in the feminine "dite", such as Joseph-Jacques wife, my 6g-grandmother, Jeanne-Anne-Genevieve Legris dite Lepine. But that rule only applies if proper grammar and syntax are still relevant. Reading the newspapers Cyperpresse presents on-line from throughout the province, it don't seem like gramer and speling make a bit of difresnse enny mor. " Cheers!
