    3. Pam .......... No known connection . The assumption is, of course, that you know ( BUT OTHERS MAY NOT ) that 999 Queen Street, Toronto, was an Insane Asylum, for the Mentally Deficient. In was still in existence, in the mid, and late 1960's. I had occasion to be thru' it, at that time. The lady, in question, may have been an Inmate, or possibly a nurse, or paid employee, altho' I doubt that employees were residents, or had that given address. 3. Hi Paul, I was not familiar with the place until another lister told me what was at that address. Not all of us grew up in or are familiar with Toronto, you know! ;-) Dorothy Scott may have been an inmate but as the other fellow, Williams, married her in 1919, I hope her affliction (if there was one) was cured by then. Pam

    3. Hi Paul and Pam, I lived in west end Toronto in the late '60s. Twice daily I passed this sad place on the streetcar, to and from work. Red Brick, flat fronted, and turn-of-the-century institutional-looking, it is forever etched in my memory. Of course, the sorry joke in Toronto at the time, if one did anything odd or mistaken, was that they would be sent to '999' (Queen St. West). Even sadder was the closing of many of these institutions (however inadequate), including '999', by the Harris government in the early 1990's, forcing many very ill people to live under bridges. But now I am getting into political comment and beyond the scope of this list. 3. Hi 999 Queen St not only had people with mental disorders in it. In the 50's and possibly even later the Toronto Children's Aid Society used it as a dumping ground for the kid's that they had run out of resources' for. The theory behind that was that if they could not get along in foster homes they had a mental problem. It was either that or they were charged as incorrigible and sent to Reform School which was an actual prison for under 21's. The kids that were sent to Queen St were there until they "behaved" with punishments of hydro therapy (being tied into a bath tub full of water) or electric shock treatment. The majority of these kids were at the rebellious age of 12 to 16 years old. The kids that went to the reform school were usually kept there until they were 21 and of course by that time they learned all the things that they shouldn't of. This was not generally known and most that this happened to kept it a secret due to the stigma attached. But it is a fact. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul and Ruth Robins" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 06, 2009 12:56 PM Subject: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] With reference to - WILLIAMS,William Elwood & SCOTT, George Buster > Pam ..........
