Thank you Lynne. Yes, I already had the census records, which is why I knew where they lived in Essa. I am trying to identify land records partly to determine when they arrived (and perhaps origin in Ireland). I will be checking out the Abstract Index for the land at the Ontario Arcvhives. The entries for Stewart's on the 1861 census (for Essa) includes 20 names. They are all found on the same page that Doreen mentioned. These are the John and Alexander's listed. Alexander, age 12; John A, age 10; John W W, age 37; John A. S., age 6 and Alexander, age 85 (his wife, Ann, is also listed). On the 1861 census, John, age 10 and Alexander, age 12 are listed with Andrew and Annabella. There are Wills available for both John and Alexander when they died in 1925 and 1914 respectively. Both died in the town of Thornton and Alexander's place of birth is given as Tecumseth. There are no Stewart's listed on the 'Settlers Before 1837' ('A History of Simcoe County, by Andrew F. Hunter') list for Essa but there is an Alex Stewart in Tecumseh on Concession 6, Lot 19. On the 1871 census for Essa Township, John W W (found on the same page as Andrew and family in 1861) is found with his wife, children and Ann, age 94. Hope this is of some help. Regards, Lynne.
