    3. Hello folks: I just joined this list and am wondering if anyone is familiar with early pioneers in Essa. I am researching the (Alexander, then John) Stewart family that settled on Concession 10 Lot 2.   Would anyone know when that area was first settled? I found no land petitions for a Stewart in Essa Twp in the Land records at the National Archives. Does this mean that at some point people just bought land without petitioning the colonial govermnment for it?   John

    3. The 1861 Canadian Census for Essa Township, Simcoe County shows an Alexander Stewart, born about 1859 in Upper Canada, religion was Episcopal. Details can be found in Archives Canada film No. C-1072. Perhaps they did not own the land but instead were tenant farmers. Cheers! 3. Hello, My Duncan Cameron came to Oro in 1836 and did not appear in any Land Patent Records. The always rented and the early assessments contain the name and location of renters as well as owners He did appear in the Oro Township assessment records from 1839 on and the only official land record is a lease his son signed in 1861. . The official Ontario Assessments didn't start until about 1851, but there is a Clerk's Book for Oro with much the same information starting from 1835 at the Simcoe County Archives. You might find the information you are looking for in Essa Township there. Marjorie Cameron McQuay.
