    3. Born John Thomas BAXTER, in Penetanguishene 6 May 1902, he was referred to as just Thomas in most of the records. Thomas was the son of William Ignatius John BAXTER and his wife Philomene CLOUTIER who were married in 1893. He died in Penetanguishene in 1983 and is buried in St. Ann's Cemetery with a few other Baxters, including at least one parent. He had one sibling, Louis William James, who served in WW1. The others are Francis, Margaret, Richard and William. If it is of any help, Thomas is a Mundy descendant, a well-known name in Simcoe County history. Thomas served in the Royal Canadian Navy and was on the corvette "Weyburn" went it was sunk in the Mediterranean in 1943. Before leaving the ship with a severely injured leg, Thomas rescued the ship's mascot, a Springer spaniel named "Posh". After his rescue, Thomas' leg was amputated in a hospital on Gibraltar. What happened to Thomas from 1943 to 1983? Did he marry, have children? What did he do for a living? If I find out, I'll let you all know. If you can fill in some blanks, email me at: PLTessier@gmail.com. Thanks, Pam

    3. Pam's message in part: "Born John Thomas BAXTER, in Penetanguishene 6 May 1902, he was referred to as just Thomas in most of the records. the message"................. Hi All, Rob McGinn in Thunder Bay here...See! I have not fallen off the planet! Descendents of the UEL Baxter family Pam has highlighted live here in Thunder Bay. I immediately forwarded Pam's message to them. The senior Baxter emailed me suggesting lunch at Rotary yesterday afternoon and I returned his message affirmative. So I showed up at Rotary Club of Port Arthur and no Mr. Baxter....Oh Well!!! I had fun anyway renewing my Rotary acquaintances ( I was a Rotarian for 23 years). It turns out Mr. Baxter only reads his emails periodically so he missed my return message to meet him and I am too deaf for the phone. This Baxter family has a detailed genealogy and they have promised to get me that book somehow..... I'll be back when I get it! Interestingly my son's father in law is also a UEL Baxter descendent for Simon Baxter of New Brunswick UE. Simon was from Connecticut. I have not been active on this list because I have pretty much completed research of my McGinns and Morris lines in Simcoe/Orillia thanks to many of you who are most helpful. I do read the messages though! I am a Shaver/Schaffer descendent! It is an interesting genealogy story and this summer saw a longstanding brick wall tumble. During the warm weather I slack off genealogy preferring golf, boating/fishing, yard work etc. Early July brought the finding at Ontario Archives by a good friend a document from 1842, Matilda Tp., Dundas, where John and Eliza McGinn were under William Cook of Matilda as parent. I had known that William Cook was "us" but I did not know how he was "us". William Cook m Rachel Shaver 1831. I knew Rachel was 30 or so when she married William so there was time for a previous marriage! So I asked Dr. Glen Lockwood of the Ottawa Diocesan Archives, Anglican Church, to search for a McGinn Shaver marriage. BINGO! 24 Aug 1824, Williamsburg, Daniel Mcgeen to Rachel Shaver, both Matilda. I have been 9 years trying to get back a McGinn generation!!!!!!!!!!! Daniel McGinn and 8-9 others came over 1820 and some settled in Matilda Tp., Dundas. This Roman Catholic family was from County Down, and Daniel married out of his faith probably causing family problems. Later in the summer/early fall we found that Daniel McGinn drowned in the St. Lawrence River 24 March 1828. Rachel took her 2 McGinn children to the second marriage and William Cook became their stepfather. Rachel Shaver McGinn dropped her married name "McGinn" after Daniel died and went by "Shaver" for reasons only she would know. So this explains our UEL heritage and our legend of being Roman Catholic in Northern Ireland. Rachel Shaver was the d/o Henry Shaver of Matilda who in turn was the s/o Philip Shaver and Elizabeth Angste UELs. John McGinn m Sarah Jane Cooke in Lansdowne 1854 and in 1869 he brought his family to Orillia where he ran a shoe merchant business until 1891 when he left the store to son William McGinn. William ran the store until the 1920s, when he moved to Toronto. John died 1905 and William Died 1937.
