    1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] CRAWFORD and O'HARA

    3. Good day listers and Happy Thanksgiving one and all. I decided to take a deep breath and plunge into the CRAWFORD ancestry of my husband once again. This was a large family, with a name that is not that uncommon and presents the usual challenges associated with such. However - because it is such a large family, and there are still many, many descendants in the area, I thought I'd take a chance and post what little I do know and see if it sounds familiar to anyone. Here's what I have so far - Thomas CRAWFORD and Margaret O'HARA (also referred to as Mary Margaret O'HARA) lived in Tiny Township for much or all of their married life; they can be found in census records. MS248_02 shows a marriage on 28 November 1842 for a Thomas CRAWFORD of Medonte and a Margaret O'HARA of Flos, by banns, in Flos. Is this MY Thomas & Margaret? Not sure; but the timing is favorable. Over the years they have 12 children Arthur, Mathilda, Mary Ann, James, Thomas, John, Clementine Frances, Catherine, William Osborne, George Edward, Margaret and Abraham. You can see why there are many descendants in the area. Most of the children grew up and married. Some of their children settled in the Wyevale area, many stayed in the Tiny Township (Wyebridge) area; coincidentally just south of where we have lived for the past 14 years; our property is mere metres away from where theirs was. My question to you is, does anyone out there recognize Thomas and Margaret? I have had no luck tracing their origins. I have seen Thomas' birth year listed as c 1813 in Canada West; Margaret's as c 1824 in Ireland. No definitive source for this though. In some census records they are both listed as Irish, in the 1881 census Scottish origin is indicated. To add to the confusion, I've even seen German listed as origin. According to the Georgian Bay Heritage League file at the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum, Thomas served as a private with the Penetang Volunteers in December of 1837. Anglican is commonly listed as religion and some of their children were baptised at St. James' on the Line in Penetanguishene. I'd love to hear from anyone who has studied this couple; just to compare notes and ideas. My interest is in the Crawford gang only for now - I have a fair bit of information on the childrens' marriages etc., my goal is to attempt to go backwards to Thomas & Margaret's ancestry. Enjoy this fantastic weekend folks. Thanks for listening! Deborah Crawford
