Trusting that everybody is having a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. The weather is superb - it couldn't have been ordered any better. On that note, I thought I'd pass on some weather notes recorded many years ago by Mr. W.H. HEWSON of Penetanguishene - lawyer, town clerk, and keeper of detailed day ledgers. For that I thank him as I've had the fortune to review and transcribe many of them. There are very few, if any, families in the area in the late 19th and early 20th century who Mr. Hewson did not have some dealings with. Whether it was a lease agreement, mortgage transaction, police / court transactions, etc., Mr. Hewson was the "go-to guy". In one ledger, dated from 1926 to 1933, his daily notes also included a brief weather report. So, for your entertainment - a summary of the weather from October 11 1928, 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33. Including names of folks he did transactions for on that particular day. October 11 1928 "Very fine". His appointments that day included Mrs Louise Cecile PAYETTE (Mrs. W.F. PAYETTE), 101 De Montigny Street, Wrightville, Hull, P.Q.; Edgar MOREAU (re Paul's Produce); Harriet TUTON (estate of), including a deed to D.S. PRATT; Napoleon BELCOURT regarding Franklin Earnest FENNELL. October 11 1929 "Frost again at night. Today fine and milder with south east wind." A light day - dealing with the CHARLEBOIS estate (rent from Wilf FORGET); Em. PAUZE regarding a lease from Paul DUPUIS. October 11 1930 "Very fine and warm." This particular October 11 was on a Saturday, yet Mr. Hewson still had a fairly full day. H.G. TODD regarding a claim to Jos. LESAUX and Henry DORION; Oliva QUESNELLE regarding his will; Mrs. Annie CUFF regarding her will; D.F. BRYNE re Art BINGHAM; Leslie H. SPRING regarding John C. PARNELL. October 11 1931 was a Sunday and no entries for the day. However, the weather report was done on Tuesday the 13th stating "Rain Saturday night and Sunday morning. Clearing about 10 a.m., turning fine, but high winds. Monday - Thanksgiving Day. And today very fine, warmer and exceptionally clear and bright". As mentioned, no transactions on that Sunday. October 11 1932 "Fresh west wind - rain with showers and much colder." His appointments that day included Alph. PAUZE regarding rental of a house to Albert ROBILLARD; J.T. PAYETTE regarding Mssrs THOMPSON and FARLEY re sale of "Vigilant". October 11 1933 "Fine and warmer". Light day - only one entry J.B. LALONDE. Hope you enjoy this bit of trivia. As you can see, ledgers such as this provide some interesting material; not only a bit of weather lore, but also day to day dealings with many familiar folks; it can be helpful when trying to locate some kin beyond the times of the assorted census material available etc. Deborah
