    1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Settlers' Day in Penetanguishene
    2. Pam Tessier
    3. Hi Listers! On Saturday, September 25th from 10 am to 4 pm, the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum & Archives is holding its annual Settlers' Day event. See the website www.pencenmuseum.com for more details. Consider this an invitation to all family historians with roots in Penetanguishene to come and show us what you've got! As we have done each year, we will have tables set up in the Great Hall for anyone who wishes to display their families' histories, documents, photos, memorabilia or treasures. This is an opportunity to network and possibly meet a new cousin or two or three. It need not be an elaborate display but be prepared to talk about your family - likely your favourite topic anyway! Set up of displays is prior to 10 and take down after 4. Lunch on the grounds with your own picnic or buy a hot dog or hamburger from the Friends of the Museum who will have their barbecues set up. If you are so inclined, purchase a $50 dinner ticket (part donation for which a tax receipt is issued) and join us at the Inn at Bay Moorings in the evening for a presentation on the life of the 2010 honouree - Rev. Father Theophilus Francois Laboureau - the 'builder' of our community and the landmark that sits on the hill, St. Ann's Church. Speaking of whom...........I would like to hear from anyone whose ancestor may have had a personal reminiscence or connection to Fr. Laboureau. I would very much like to see any photos of this man as they seem to have been rather scarce. And if you are related to the family of James Celestin Martin, please contact me off-list. Looking forward to seeing you, Pam Tessier Genealogy & History Research Centre

    3. Info on a gravestone isn't always correct, as has turned out to be the case with one of our family. Someone compiled a family tree many years ago which turns out to have many errors, as we learned when more records both in Ontario and in Ireland became available. A man who actually died in 1859, as documented in the surrogate court records, has a tombstone which claims he died in 1875. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Conlin" <conlin2004@hotmail.com> To: <can-ont-simcoe@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 04, 2010 9:43 PM Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Robert Bailey and his wife Anne Bailey > > Hi Patricia: > > > > I thought that with the details from the gravestone it would be easier to > find Robert Bailey and Ann Linton's death registration in Ontario.... but > nothing was found. Hello Gary, Thank you so very much for this precious information - now I know why my father was named "Linton", which he thought was a mistake made at his birth by the recording priest (the Catholic Church was the only place at that time in 1901, to record births), in St. Boniface, Manitoba, for "Milton" as his father and grandfather had been named. Do you have the contact info for the cemetery as I would like to contact the office to see if they would take photos for me of all my ancestors and email back to me. I have had this done here and in California. Do you happen to know how I may trace my GGgrandparent's arrival in Orillia, their marriage, their ancestors, etc., and if they were indeed from Donegal? I was just hoping that by chance someone might know who he was related to. All of the news items about him are rather vague and non specific. I appreciate your time. 1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Robert Bailey and his wife Anne Bailey
    2. Debbie
    3. Hi, I did some quick searches and this is what I have found (and not found): Looks like this is the marriage registration of one of the daughters (which provides a maiden name): http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maryc/simcoe58.htm William PEARD, 22, Ireland, Orillia, s/o John PEARD & Hellen SUTTON, married Martha BAILEY, 22, Orillia, same, d/o Robert BAILEY & Anne LINTON (SINTON), witn; John BAILEY of Orillia. 4 Oct, 1858. Here is their gravestone: http://www.gravemarkers.ca/ontario/centont/simcoe/orillia/standrew/blocka/ba iley5.jpg Based on this marriage record, it looks like they came before 1838. Found this marriage registration for a son on ancestry: Name: John Bailey Age: 23 Birth Place: Orillia Spouse Name: Dunn, Catharine Spouse Age: 20 Spouse Birth Place: Orillia Marriage Date: 7 Mar 1862 Spouse Father Name: Thomas Dunn Spouse Mother Name: Margaret Jamieson Microfilm Roll: 1030064 Father Name: Robert Bailey Mother Name: Ann Linton Spouse residence: Orillia Residence: Orillia County: Simcoe Marriage Place: Orillia St James Church seems to have some information on Robert as a patron in 1841-49 : http://www.stjamesorillia.com/history.html A search of the Simcoe Settlers Database (http://www.simcoebogs.com/database/settlersdata_list.php) shows a Robert Bailey dying in 1885 and Ann (nee Linton) on May 4, 1888. I did a quick look for death registrations but have not found any... A pic of their stone is here: http://www.gravemarkers.ca/ontario/centont/simcoe/orillia/standrew/blockh/ba iley2.jpg, unfortunately nothing on their stone regarding where they were from... There is another Ann Bailey ( don't think this is your Ann though) in the Settlers Database who died May 16, 1887 and this is her death record from: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onvsr/death/deathindex_ba-bd_new.htm: BAILEY, Ann, f, May 16, 1887, 81 years, Belfast Ireland, cause - old age, infm - J.T. Bailey, Orillia (Simcoe Co.) 015847-87 I looked at the Orillia newspaper index for a Bailey obit (or marriage record etc): http://news.ourontario.ca/orillia/search.asp but the only hit I got was J.T Bailey (referenced in the "other" Ann Bailey above) In the 1891 Canadian Census's people were asked for their immigration year and the country of birth for their mother and father. If you have the names of any children before Martha it might be possible to search for this person in the census (or BMD records) to see if any info can be found that can point to where the family came from. Martha noted that both her parents were from Ireland in the 1891 census.. Sorry not much help but maybe the maiden name of Ann may help if you did not know if previously. 3. If Arthur Litster was born in Ontario after 1911 then the record is not yet available. The birth records currently available are for the period 1869 - 1911. The 1911 Canada Census shows several persons in the vicinity of Simcoe with the surname Litster which you can read as you may know some siblings: www.automatedgenealogy.com Cheers! 3. You might consider joining the Rootsweb list for IRL-CO-DONEGAL or for DONEGALEIRE. Perhaps someone there can point you in the right direction. Hopefully from the burial of Robert's wife you have her maiden name which will help finding their marriage in Ireland. LDS Pilot has births and baptisms from 1620-1881 which may be useful to you as well. Cheers! 3. Thank you Doreen, I have this information. I have spent years at Cloverdale Library working on my maternal side and am now working on my paternal side. I also have thew 1841 census for Robert, Anne and William. I am at a brick wall now as Robert and Anne were born in Ireland and I need direction as to how to trace their records back to Donegal, Ireland via the internet as I am not in a financial situation to pay for research or copies, etc. Also looking for descendants of my Bailey line who may have photos and further info. regards, Patricia Johnson Bailey ----- Original Message ----- From: "Conlin" <conlin2004@hotmail.com> To: <can-ont-simcoe@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 02, 2010 2:42 PM Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Robert Bailey and his wife Anne Bailey > > The 1861 Canada Census for Simcoe County, Orillia shows the following information: > > > > BAILEY > > " Robert - age 53, born Ireland, Occ: carpenter, rel: FC > > >Ann - age 51, born Ireland > > >William - age 21, born UC > > >James - age 17, born UC > > >Samuel - age 13, born UC > > > > Patricia, your Cloverdale library has an excellent genealogy section complete with microfiche, old maps and books of early inhabitants all across Canada and parts of the USA. 3. Hi Pat Your Baileys are buried at St. Andrew's St. James' Cemetery in Orillia. Heather Bertram Orillia -----Original Message----- From: can-ont-simcoe-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:can-ont-simcoe-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Patricia A. M. Johnson Sent: August 2, 2010 12:35 AM To: Administrator Subject: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Robert Bailey and his wife Anne Bailey Dear Listers, I am looking for any details I can obtain for my paternal GGGrandfather, Robert Bailey and his wife, Anne living in Orillia (Upper Canada) at the time of the 1841 Census. According to 1841 Census, they were born in Ireland 1808 and 1810 and were FC religion. My father always told me they were from Donegal, Ireland. While at the library recently, I came across more information stating that a Robert Bailey and family were amongst the first of six families to settle in Orillia from Ireland. Their son William, my GGrandfather, was born in Upper Canada in 1840. Their Grandson, Robert Milton, my Grandfather, was born in Orillia in 1869 and was part of the Second Riel Rebellion of 1885 at Batoche, Manitoba. I believe all the Bailey men were carpenters. On the next Census it shows Robert and Anne born in Ireland of Scottish descent - my father always stated to us that his ancestors were Irish, so this is something else I would like to investigate. I am trying to establish when they came to Canada and find their BMDs and further ancestoral information and their descendants. Can you please help me with my search? Many thanks, Patricia Johnson Bailey Cloverdale, B. C. ***************** Ten People All Genealogists Should Follow On Twitter: http://tr.im/hBAy Simcoe Co.
