    1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Ships Passenger Lists to Canada before 1865
    2. Olive Tree Genealogy
    3. Hello everone, Because I am asked about this so frequently, I have written up where you can look for existing passenger records to Canada before 1865. There are *no* comprehensive lists of immigrants arriving in Canada prior to 1865. Until that year, shipping companies were not required by the government to keep their passenger manifests. There is a 2-column "chart" at http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/canada/ which gives a comprensive list of ALL available ships passenger lists for Canada both online and offline. One side of the chart is for Shipos arriving before 1865, the other side for ships arriving after 1865. Links are provided on the chart for ALL online records - most are free, a few are pay-to-view Here are some individual projects and databases online that maybe of help in your search: * Ships passenger lists for Peter Robinson Settlers sailing1825 Ireland to Canada are online at http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/canada/PeterRobinson.shtml This includes extracts from Surgeon's Log Books and Lists of names from LAC microfilm * There are a few surviving passenger lists which were kept by shipping agents in the originating country. The Passenger Books of J & J Cooke, Shipping Agents gives sailings from Londonderry to Quebec and St. John New Brunswick from 1847 to 1871. These are online at * http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/jjcooke.shtml * * You can consult the St. Lawrence Steamboat Co. Passenger Records 1819-1836 at * http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/1819_20inde*x.htm<http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/1819_20index.htm> * The Hawke Papers, letterbooks of Chief Emigrant Agent Anthony B. Hawke are also available at the Archives of Ontario. They cover the years 1831 to 1892. See the searchable database for years 1865 - 1883 at *http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/db/hawke.htm * * Names of Emigrants from the 1845-1847 Records of James Allison, Emigrant Agent at Montreal is also online This is an index only but if you find a name of interest you can consult thepublished book. * http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/emigrants-montreal1845-*1847a.htm<http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/emigrants-montreal1845-1847a.htm>(2 line URL, copy and paste BOTH lines into your web browser, no spaces in the URL) * There is also the "Return of Emigrants Landed at the Port of Kingston Ontario, Canada 1861-1882" which gives the final destination of the individuals, their date of arrival at Kingston and more. It is found at * http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/kingston1861oct-*1862may.shtml<http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/kingston1861oct-1862may.shtml>(2 line URL, copy and paste BOTH lines into your web browser, no spaces in the URL) * Petworth Immigrants 1832-1837 at * http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/petworth.ht*ml<http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/petworth.html> * Emigrants from England in New York City Almshouse 1818-1830 - 254 names of English immigrants to Canada & USA including the name of the ship they sailed on at * http://www.allenglishrecords.com/almshouse-a-f.shtml * * If you are looking for Irish ancestors, you may want to search the online database Immigrants at Grosse-Île at * http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/022-504-e.html * This database has information on 33,026 immigrants whose names appear in surviving records of the Grosse-Île Quarantine Station between 1832 and 1937. ****************************************** Mailing Lists There is a mailing list called CAN-SHIPSLISTS-PRE1865-L for queries and discussion involving immigration to Canada before 1865. 1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] HATTON, BALD, KNOWLES
    2. Deborah Crawford
    3. Okay folks - here's one more letter of interest I thought I'd pass along. This letter features three "overseas men"; presumably they served in World War I "overseas" and is in reference to a request from a Mr. Henderson of Orillia regarding assistance with the taking of the 1921 census. April 30 1921 (to) Jas. B. Henderson, Esq., Orillia, Ont. Dear Mr. Henderson: Re: Census, 1921. In answer to yours of 27th, desiring me to suggest to you the names of enumerators for Penetanguishene for purpose of taking the Census in June, I would recommend the names of Joseph Hatton, for south ward; Andrew Bald, for centre ward, and Stanley Knowles, for North Ward. Hatton is an overseas man, and is secretary for the local branch of the G.W.V.A. (my note - this was the Great War Veterans' Association). He is invalided and unable to do any work, but, of course, gets about every day, walking with a cane, and is in every way well qualified for the work. Bald is also an overseas man, and since his return has been in a very poor state of health, on the invalid list. He is at present doing the light work of Janitor of the Protestant Separate School. Well qualified for the work. For the North Ward, or No. 3, I would not think it advisable that an officer of the institution should do the work, except for the institution itself, and in recommending Knowles, I think that he is probably the best man for the work in that ward. He is an overseas man. Served with the British Regulars for a number of years in India, before coming to Canada, acted as drill sergeant for the local Company of the 157th, and went overseas with them. I have spoke to Billie Beck and he agrees with me that you could not make better appointments than these three men. I have not been able to see Mr. Payette(illegible) matter, but I am sure that he would also agree that these three are competent men, and would give complete satisfaction. As to their politics, I do not know what way they vote. They are, none of them, of any strong party allegiance. Hatton acted as enumerator for one of the wards at the last taking enumeration for voters' lists a couple years ago, and his work was exceptionally satisfactory. The other two men are quite as good as he. Yours sincerely, (unsigned, but again most likely authored by W.H. Hewson). A copy of this will be placed in each family file in the research room. On a personal note, Mr. Hatton was, I'm pretty certain, the father in law (or he would be several years later) of my grandfather's sister. The Hatton home was located on a lot in what is now a huge parking lot for the Village Square Mall facing Main Street in Penetanguishene (the south east side of town). Again, an unusual source in which to find some minor biographical detail that may set a path for the researcher to follow. We know they were "overseas men" - so one could look to their attestation papers, and service documents. We know what company Mr. Knowles served with, and that he was in India at one point. So there you have it friends. My little bit of trivia for the day. Have a good one. Deborah

    3. I suppose it won't hurt anyone all these years later to post the names of the "audience" at Payette's Stable at the event referred to in yesterday's post. So, here they are: John Watson vs J.T. Payette et al April 17 1919 J.T. Payette, Abraham Moses and John Deolin of Penetang, Charles Sutherland, Wm. Duncan, Manley Chew, F.P. Potvin, Stuart Benson, W.E. Preston, Capt. Wm. Beatty, Albert Semple, Hugh McGill, Hugh Wilson, John Tully and Gilbert Hill, all of Midland; John Maunder Jr. Lindsay; Edward Webb, John Trill, J.B. Johnson, Robert Calverly of Orillia and George Graham, Peterboro; W.P. Thomson of Hamilton. Date of the offence was 25 March 1919. Any familiar folks? Deborah

    1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Remembrance Day 1938
    2. Fred and Gwen Patterson
    3. This poem was written by W.J. Mark of Elmvale and published in The Midland Free Press (Vol LVII, No 46, page 6) of November 16, 1938. TWENTY YEARS AGO Do you remember twenty years ago, The tumult and the shouting of our race; The boisterous glad music and the show Of wild delight on street and market-place? Do you remember how you felt just then, When you obtained the news that war was done; Your heart elated joined rejoicing men In grateful praise, that victory was won? Do you remember when the shadows fell, You saw your comrades who had won their peace, In the grim battle that was death and hell, And all the clamorings of your soul did cease? You gave your rev'rent thought to them and cried: "God teach us to remember what it cost, In splendid human lives just sacrificed, That we may honour them, our loved and lost" They fell in fighting we escaped and now, As comrades, we pay tribute to their worth; We cannot place a laurel on their brow, But we can show their valour here on earth. We can be true, as true as they were true, In splendid friendship nothing here can sever; We can live on to do what they would do, And in our hearts enshrine their names forever."

    3. Good evening listers. Hope you're having a pleasant autumn - everybody must be busy with their winter preparations as the list is quiet of late.......so, for your reading pleasure. Once again, I was poking about in town/ village papers housed in the archives at Penetanguishene Centennial Museum. In a box of town letters dated January 1st 1918 to December 31st 1921 I found many items of interest and have copied, transcribed and placed references in the appropriate family files in our research room. One such paper I would like to share with you, it may provide a chuckle or two. Mr. J.T. PAYETTE was a local businessman - his stables located in the eastern end of town, on what was then pretty wide open land. It now houses many sub-divisions; with names such as "Sulky Drive" in honour of the stable. In this letter dated June 13 1919, our friend Mr. Payette was being warned by the local authority (as it's unsigned, I am not sure if it was from Mr. Hewson the clerk - I suspect it was - or from the local magistrate - at any rate, it represented the law). I suspect that motorized vehicles were not that abundant in 1919 in Penetanguishene; obviously our pal Mr. Payette was in possession of one or more. And from the contents of this letter, I gather Mr. Payette enjoyed the "freedom of the road, and the wind in his hair". Letter as follows - J.T. Payette, Esq., Town - Dear J.T. I wish to let you know that complaints have been made as to rate of speed at which the big grey car frequently comes up the hill - sometimes in charge of J.T. himself, and at other time in charge of his driver, or one of his drivers. Now, of course, when you are driving yourself, you are taking your own chances - and some of these days, boy, you are going to be "pinched" if you don't slow down a bit when coming up Main Street. But, if you are willing to take a chance yourself, there is no reason why your drivers should be getting you into trouble, so I wish that you would warn young Moreau, and any other chaps that you permit to drive your cars, to be a little careful. There is no big hurry as a rule, and a little time taken along the street is not going to have them "docked" at the box-office on pay-day. There is another reason, J.T., why I write to you. It is this. When we check anybody else for hitting the clip too lively at the foot of the hill, there is the "come-back" - Well, why do you let J.T. speed up as fast as he likes, and then get after us fellows. Comprennez Vous? Yours truly, Mr. Payette's chauffers did indeed receive tickets in the coming years, I recall bumping into them a few times while transcribing constables' reports. Now Mr. Payette was no stranger to the local respresentatives of the law. Earlier that year, in April of 1919, our pal Mr. Payette was part of a group of local movers and shakers who were arrested at his stables while running a "male rooster" fighting ring; I won't insert the real word for male rooster lest I get caught in someone's spam filter, confused with an ad for .......well, you know. Anyway - Mr. Payette, Mr. Manley Chew of Midland, Abraham Moses (who several years later would also be arrested for running slot machines in the basement of The Georgian Hotel); all together 22 men from Midland, Penetanguishene, Orillia and Lindsay were arrested at the rooster ring. They were issued fines ranging from $5 and costs up to $25 and costs. So - enjoy this brief glimpse back in time - 91 years ago. Deborah Crawford

This long established, free-access National Site is proud to announce that there are more than 700 cemeteries completely photographed and onboard, amounting to over 350,000 searchable photographs. If you have family or friends anywhere in Canada, who may be interested in photographing their local cemeteries, please inform them of the availability of The Canadian Gravemarker Gallery. Their photographed cemeteries will have world wide exposure on this National Cemetery Photograph website. * 4. If you and/or your organization are interested in your local cemeteries going online, please contact Murray P l e t s c h at: pletsch@cogeco.ca or murray@gravemarkers.ca - there are no cemeteries too big or too small...! * 5. A comprehensive "Tips and Hints" brochure will be sent to all interested folks....to help them get started photographing entire cemeteries. * * SUBSCRIBING TO THE WEBSITE UPDATES NEWSLETTER: ******************************************** * Don't miss future monthly updates. Subscribe to the automatic Gravemarker Galleries Newsletter. Please go to the Website at: http://www.gravemarkers.ca and click on the "Join Updates Newsletter" button located just above the weather row. * * HELPFUL HINTS: ************* * 1. Are you tracing a female ancestor....? Cemeteries online have spousal duplicated photographs. This means a photo of a stone which also has the spouse's maiden name showing, is duplicated and when one searches using the onboard search engine, for a surname, the spouse's surname will be reported as a separate "search result". * 2. Over the years it has been apparent that this website is instrumental in breaking down researchers' brick walls. In fact many folks have travelled to cemeteries which are onboard to physically observe the grave markers. Please note that on some cemeteries we have included the contact information for the cemetery "record holders". * 3. If you don't see a Community and its' cemeteries online...it means a volunteer has not photographed and sent me the cemetery photographs. Can you or some of your family or friends help out by photographing the missing cemeteries....? * * FEEDBACK ******* * We are always interested in feedback from Visitors. If you have any questions or suggestions to improve the Canadian Gravemarker Gallery please do not hesitate to send your concerns or suggestions to: pletsch@cogeco.ca * * ********************************************* Best regards...........Murray P l e t s c h * Cdn Gravemarker Gallery - http://gravemarkers.ca * Ont Historic Gallery - http://rootsweb.com/~cannor *

    2. Olive Tree Genealogy
    3. Hi everyone Rootsweb is not in favour of subscribers listing paid services or products for sale on the mailing lists. But as list admin I have some leeway. I've always permitted mention of GENEALOGY related products or services as long as no private price/fee negotiations are posted to the list So that means sellers can state that they have books for sale. They can list the books. But PLEASE do not start giving prices, shipping charges etc on the list. Those interested in buying should NOT start asking prices on the list. All questions and answers regarding cost of books, shipping etc are to be done privately and not on the list Thank you for your co-operation.
