    2. Interesting. When I googled it I did not get this. I was hoping it was a town or township or something. I note that the red marker is actually in the middle of Jenne Lake though, so that wasn't much help. Annie in Minnesota In a message dated 11/12/2010 9:53:11 A.M. 3. This letter was written in 1928 or 1929 - unsure of exact date but sure it's one of those two years. Addressed to: Health Dept.Penetang Gentlemen: Are you aware of the fact, that General Stores are illegally selling Bayers Aspirin, as you know this is directly against the Ontario Statutes, we must ask you to at least warn the trade to stop this unfair trading. We do not ask prosecution. Merely a warning would suffice. A Victim I just thought it was interesting that "a victim" would be complaining of this. Was the victim a drugstore owner? A doctor? I suppose we'll never know. But I suspect they'd be shocked at what can be bought at any number of establishments today. And as a further point of interest, Penetanguishene Board of Health members for 1929 were Dr. P.A. McDonald, Joseph Hatton and Mayor J.B. Jennings. Another trivial offering from, Deborah Crawford

    3. Dick Eastman had the following announcement in this morning's newsletter: Largest Collection of Canadian WWI Death and Burial Records Now Online The following announcement was written by Ancestry.ca: Records offer rare insight into the circumstances of death and final resting grounds for Canadian soldiers who perished in First World War -- Ancestry.ca * Famous names include John McCrae, George Lawrence Price and Henry Norwest * Ancestry.ca to offer free access to select Canadian, US and British military records from November 11-14 There are three new databases (available now for subscribers, Nov. 11-14 free for others) and I checked them out. I used the names of three known casualties from my family to search. There is new information in these databases that is not in the service records I hady already obtained from Library and Archives Canada. For instance: the burial locations are exact, the cause of death may be included rather than just "Killed in Action". In one case, it described the wound that killed the soldier in detail. Canada, CEF Burial Registers, First World War, 1914-1919 <http://search.ancestry.ca/search/db.aspx?dbid=1973> Canada, CEF Commonwealth War Graves Registers, 1914-1919 <http://search.ancestry.ca/search/db.aspx?dbid=1952> One of the databases Canada, Selected Service Records of Soldiers, 1914-1918 <http://search.ancestry.ca/search/db.aspx?dbid=1903> - Free Index is very selective indeed. Having read many service records, I am sure there are some that will never be included in this database. But check it out anyway as some of the records contain over a 100 pages for the soldier. Pam

    1. Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] PARK LOT
    2. Malcolm Moody
    3. Hi Heather, Not to steal Pam's thunder (as if I could!) Park Lots were a feature of the standard model for laying out all towns when the surveyors were doing this work in the middle of the 1800's. To quote directly from, "Land Settlement in Upper Canada by George Patterson : published 1921": <QUOTE> The town plots in each township measured one mile square, and usually, if an inland township, were situated in the centre. If a water township, they were in the middle of the waterfront. Each town plot was laid out on a prescribed plan, with town lots of one acre, town parks of twentyfour acres, and squares and streets of stated dimensions. <END QUOTE> This is just an extract from the middle of a paragraph but the book also explains that it was expected that the geography and geographic features of the local be considered when placing and making a specific plan but that the standard was to be applied as far as possible. The lot sizes quoted guided the surveyors as to how to "stake" their initial plan but we all know that the actual properties granted and/or purchased were actually part lots in the majority of cases. Some of the Park Lots were to be reserved for public areas while other areas were reserved for church and government purposes. The book is actually quite interesting reading (well, I find it so) and understanding these relatively simple principles tends to give you a few clues when you drive into a strange (Ontario*) town for the first time. (Everything West of Ontario was laid out on an entirely different base and - of course - Quebec was laid out according to French based principals.) We have made a digital edition of the book so you can find a fuller description of it on our web site (see my sig. line) by looking for our Catalogue number CA0227. So, in more direct answer to your question yes, Orillia almost certainly had park lots all around the centre of the (original) town. The geography of the lake shore in Orillia does not make it obvious how the original surveyors would have tried to impose the "standard plan", The road layout doesn't offer any hint (again to me), and I'm resisting the temptation to guess. I think you may have to try and look at an old property map and see how they distorted the nice neat rectangular waterfront layout to accommodate your bays and headlands before you could even start to guess where the Park Lots were. The library in Orillia and/or the local planning department would be my first calls. Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc. President: Malcolm Moody PO Box 11 Manotick Ontario, K4M 1A2 Canada. I am researching a piece of property, south half of the south half of Park Lot A, west side of Peter Street, Lot 6, concession 5, Township of South Orillia. The term "Park Lot" refers to property located in the town of Penetanguishene and also on the shoreline on the opposite side of Penetang Bay in what was then Tiny Township. The lots were originally granted to the military pensionners at the Establishments and the Drummond Islanders in return for their service in the War of 1812. -- Heather

    1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Why can't I find grannie's grave marker?
    2. Pam Tessier
    3. I'd like a dollar for every time I've had to give the reasons why grannie or gandpa doesn't have a marker on their grave. I've actually considered recording standard answers to questions like this. I'm not going to repeat them all now but, please people, take off your 2010 spectacles and look at life in the old days as it was then. Do your homework and read, read, read. The perfect answer to that marker question is sitting before me now. As Deb has mentioned, we have access ( and now you do too!) to records that most people haven't seen since they were filed away many years ago. One such set of records is correspondence between various people, organizations, businesses and the clerk of the town. I am excluding the names in this letter. Penetang May 12 1920 Mr. Charlie Ellis Dear Sir Will you please bring attention at the next council meeting if it is possible to help me carry on the expenses of _________'s burial which amount to 64 dollars for the undertaker Any amount you can give me will be well excepted. Yours truly ___________Jr. The writer is a close relative of the deceased, the year is 1920 just before the Great Depression set in, written from a small community where people have often had to struggle to put food on the table. You can research the value of $64 in 1920 to today's currency. Do you think the undertaker got paid? Do you think the deceased has a lovely granite marker on his grave? Pam

    3. Hi Listers, Looks to be another nice day to stay in with a book, a fire in the fireplace and a hug in a mug. But if you are not so inclined, on behalf of the staff and the volunteers at the Penetanguishene Museum I invite you all to visit us at the museum this afternoon between 1 and 3 for refreshments (Timmie's coffee!) and a look at the display we have put together for Remembrance Day. Penetang's soldiers will not be forgotten! All the material in the archives pertaining to both World Wars - medals, equipment, pictures, uniforms - has been assembled in one room. We have on loan, artifacts and pictures of HMCS Penetang. In addition, our transcriber, better known by the name of Deb, has been rooting around in some municipal papers and has located many items pertaining to the citizens of the town and life on the home front during the wars. She has graciously brought her personal collection of WW 2 items for your viewing. Genealogical material on all the soldiers who enlisted or were drafted in WW 1 has been assembled in one book and along with some very poignant pictures of these young men and their families you will have a better understanding of what war meant to them personally. Our Wall of Remembrance for WW2 soldiers is now in an easily accessible place. I am sure if you have family from Penetang or Tiny who served in either war, you will find information on them and possibly a picture. Thanks to Paul Robbins, we have a unique wedding picture taken in 1919 but some of the participants need identification. Perhaps you can help. Drop in, sit and take time to look through all the material. This is a hands-on exhibit and you are welcome to browse through the material. Of course, you may have to share! Can't make it today? Too bad, as there is no admission charge today only! Regular admission will apply for the remainder of the month. Visit any day (excepting Nov. 11 and Sundays) during the month of November, show your Legion card and admission is free. Hope to see you there! Pam Tessier Penetanguishene Museum

    3. Carolyn Land for this cemetery was deeded to the First Presbyterian Church in 1858. A number of stones record deaths prior to that date, one as early as 1839. However, it was not uncommon for pioneers to be buried on their farm, and later when a church was established, to be reinterred in the new church yard cemetery, or at least have their name included on a stone there. Either way, the stones were normally erected by immediate family members, occasionally by a good friend or neighbor and rarely by the local congregation. The stones were generally purchased and engraved by the nearest local monument makers, such as J. Cassidy, Reid, M & B and Borrowmen typically in Bradford or Barrie, but occasionally Newmarket, Alliston or even Toronto. Hope this helps. John F. 3. I hope someone can help me with the history of the Wilson Hill Pioneer Cemetery south of Cookstown, and help me find other sources to pursue, regarding the death of Henry and Elizabeth Mooney. When did the first burials take place in the cemetery? What denominations used this cemetery? Who provided the stones and did the engraving? My ancestor was Henry Mooney and his wife Elizabeth. I have photographed their monument. The inscriptions are very well preserved, since the stone was tilted forward on about a 45 degree angle, protecting it from the elements. The inscription reads: On the top: Elizabeth Underneath: Henry Mooney Died Sept. 10, 1842 Aged 65 Family oral history reports Elizabeth died c.1865 and was buried on the corner of a Mooney farm in Egbert, a large stone for a marker. I have no other confirming records of their deaths. The 1861 census of Essa shows a Henry Mooney, aged 91, living with the family of John McManus. Could there be 2 Henry Mooney's ages approximately the same, both born Ireland? And both early pioneers? Thanks, Carolyn
