Hello Listers, I have an obituary for Thomas W. Kitchen who died March 7th, 2005 in the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital. The obit says that he married Greta Harvie. According to his obit he would have been born about 1929. He had the following siblings: Edward, Irene Bannerman, Donnie, Joe, Bessie Sallows and Dorothy Sallows. The funeral was held at St. James' Anglican Church. I am trying to find who his parents were. I have the parents of his wife, Greta, as William Alexander Harvie and Mary Amelia Caswell. Any help with identifying his parents would be greatly appreciated! Gwen Cunningham gwenny@snet.net

If you go to the Simcoe County OGS Settler's Database Advanced search page here: http://www.simcoebogs.com/database/settlersdata_search.php Type in Gilchrist on the surname line, then on the Source line, change it to "starts with" and type in Barrie, a list of Gilchrist's buried in Barrie Union Cemetery come up. If any of the resulting entries appear to be yours I can look up the death reg to see if they died at a time when Place of Burial was one of the categories, if you like. You might also want to search the Barrie Public Library newspaper index for the surname Gilchrist: http://news.ourontario.ca/barrie/search If you find entries that appear to be your people you can email the library for the entries. I don't think they charge for this but it may depend on how many you ask for. Born John Thomas BAXTER, in Penetanguishene 6 May 1902, he was referred to as just Thomas in most of the records. Thomas was the son of William Ignatius John BAXTER and his wife Philomene CLOUTIER who were married in 1893. He died in Penetanguishene in 1983 and is buried in St. Ann's Cemetery with a few other Baxters, including at least one parent. He had one sibling, Louis William James, who served in WW1. The others are Francis, Margaret, Richard and William. If it is of any help, Thomas is a Mundy descendant, a well-known name in Simcoe County history. Thomas served in the Royal Canadian Navy and was on the corvette "Weyburn" went it was sunk in the Mediterranean in 1943. Before leaving the ship with a severely injured leg, Thomas rescued the ship's mascot, a Springer spaniel named "Posh". After his rescue, Thomas' leg was amputated in a hospital on Gibraltar. What happened to Thomas from 1943 to 1983? Did he marry, have children? What did he do for a living? If I find out, I'll let you all know. If you can fill in some blanks, email me at: PLTessier@gmail.com. Thanks, Pam
I was dismantling the museum's November World Wars display the other day and finally had a chance to see it all - as I put it into boxes for next year! As I did so, I was able to appreciate the amount of work Deb had put into the section on the WW2 soldiers. I'll let her tell you how she did it, but there are pages and pages of newspaper clippings all referencing the men and women who served from the Penetanguishene area. I've decided that amount of work, and the service these people gave to our country, deserves better than just putting the pile out for everyone to sort and look through. I am going to spend time over the next year compiling biographies and records of each person and putting them in one big binder, as I did in 2009 for the WW1 soldiers. The problem is that many of them were born after the privacy cut-off dates for civil and religious records. Records will be scarce and here is where all the Simcoe listers come in to the picture. I need your help! Occasionally, from now to November 2011, I will post a request for help in finding further information. I am hoping to find a relative or someone with a connection to the family who can help me fill in blanks. But, and this is a big but, I will not do this until I have searched all the available websites and museum records so there will be no need to start at square one when I post my request. Being first off the mark is not important, what you contribute is. If we had access to the 1921 census how easy this would be! So stay tuned........the first request is about to hit your inboxes. Pam

I thought some on this list might enjoy the following, particularly as the township in question is now a part of Simcoe: I am working on a book which provides the history of Ontario County (which has since been discontinued and broken up.) It contains chapters on the origins of each of its townships, and the report on the second meeting to this particular town council contains an extract from the minutes to the effect that the second council meeting was held in the township schoolhouse and: … it adjourned at noon for one hour to meet afterwards at the Traveler's Rest. The clerk parenthetically remarks that the "old boys found the school a dry sort of place." There was no further report on the outcome of the afternoon session. I reread your post about Mary Ann Marlow and John McAvoy.....my great grandmother was Catherine McAvoy (1852-1890)), she was the daughter of Patrick McAvoy and Ellen Marlow...I wonder if they were related in any way-I have been unable to find any death info on Catherine but she had a baby in 1888 and is no longer listed in the 1891 census. Do you have any leads on this family? At the Canadian Gravemarker Gallery, which is online at: http://gravemarkers.ca ..we can accommodate unlimited numbers of photographs of complete cemeteries from anywhere in Canada. The photographers and/or organizations are given credit on the website for their interest and hard work. * 2. This long established, free-access National Site is proud to announce that there are more than 800 cemeteries completely photographed and onboard, amounting to over 350,000 searchable photographs. There have been 600,000 visitors to the site. Each day there are over 200 folks browsing the site and there are over 12,000 name searches each month. * 3. If you have family or friends anywhere in Canada, who may be interested in photographing their local cemeteries, please inform them of the availability of The Canadian Gravemarker Gallery. Their photographed cemeteries will have world wide exposure on this National Cemetery Photograph website. * 4. If you and/or your organization are interested in your local cemeteries going online, please contact Murray P l e t s c h at: pletsch@cogeco.ca or murray@gravemarkers.ca - there are no cemeteries too big or too small...! * 5. A comprehensive "Tips and Hints" brochure will be sent to all interested folks....to help them get started photographing entire cemeteries. * * SUBSCRIBING TO THE WEBSITE UPDATES NEWSLETTER: ******************************************** * Don't miss future monthly updates. Subscribe to the automatic Gravemarker Galleries Newsletter. Please go to the Website at: http://www.gravemarkers.ca and click on the "Join Updates Newsletter" button located just above the weather row. * * HELPFUL HINTS: ************* * 1. Are you tracing a female ancestor....? Cemeteries online have spousal duplicated photographs. This means a photo of a stone which also has the spouse's maiden name showing, is duplicated and when one searches using the onboard search engine, for a surname, the spouse's surname will be reported as a separate "search result". * 2. Over the years it has been apparent that this website is instrumental in breaking down researchers' brick walls. In fact many folks have travelled to cemeteries which are onboard to physically observe the grave markers. Please note that on some cemeteries we have included the contact information for the cemetery "record holders". * 3. If you don't see a Community and its' cemeteries online...it means a volunteer has not photographed and sent me the cemetery photographs. Can you or some of your family or friends help out by photographing the missing cemeteries....? * * FEEDBACK ******* * We are always interested in feedback from Visitors. If you have any questions or suggestions to improve the Canadian Gravemarker Gallery please do not hesitate to send your concerns or suggestions to us at : pletsch@cogeco.ca * * ********************************************* Merry Christmas to You and Yours.....Murray P l e t s c h * Cdn Gravemarker Gallery - http://gravemarkers.ca * Ont Historic Gallery - http://rootsweb.com/~cannor * *********************************************
