    3. Lauraine -- WHY did you add "Off Topic" in the subject line? It would not be off topic for the SIMCOE list, as many residents reading the messages, including myself, do have Scottish ancestry. However, should anyone find an elusive Lady Jane MacKenzie, written out of her family history because she married my gr.gr.grandfather John Davis -- please let me know! Muriel ----- Original Message ----- Again, will miss this broadcast! Leaving for a couple of weeks to camp, but hopefully someone on the lists can listen and benefit. If you have Scottish roots, listening to BBC Scotland, Orkney or Shetland is a treat. Lauraine BBC Radio Scotland are running a short series on genealogy research (mainly for Scotland) on a Sunday morning at 11am. This is the second series, the first being broadcast about six months ago. There have already been two programmes in the current series. This programme is available to "Listen Again" for a week after initially broadcast. So if you want to listen to last Sunday's programme you'll only be able to get it over the next couple of days. If you have broadband access the quality is pretty good. It should still be OK over a modem, but the quality will be much lower. Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/radioscotland/ and follow the link in the left hand menu to "Listen Again".Then scroll down the page to find "Digging Up Your Roots". You can also listen to it as it's broadcast on the internet, or even on a radio if you have one that can tune in to Radio Scotland.

    3. Lynne, Thanks for looking. That's the only one I found when I googled it. John McKinnon was born in Erin Twp where his parents are buried. One brother Neil went to Michigan but the other siblings lived in Bruce County and most are buried in Port Elgin. In fact in the 1901 census he is living in Port Elgin with his sister Margaret and her husband Abram Smith, another spinster sister Sarah and a widowed Aunt Nancy. There is no connection I know of, with BC....or even with Simcoe County, except for the fact that he was in the hospital there. 3. Hi Pam My 5th great grandparents were Samuel French & Sarah Hale who ended up in Waverley. I have done some research on the Hale family in Gloucestershire, England. I am not aware of any connection to Harry Hale in Penetanguishene, however, if the records indicate his family was from Gloucestershire, I would definitely be interested in taking a look. Thanks John F. Wright Barrie, Ontario -----Original Message----- From: can-ont-simcoe-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:can-ont-simcoe-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pam Tessier Sent: Wednesday, July 11, 2007 4:50 PM To: can-ont-simcoe@rootsweb.com Subject: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] HALE & SPURR Hello all, Another day at the museum and more interesting items just keep appearing................. A few weeks ago, we given a collection of material that was no longer wanted. It has taken a roundabout path to get to us but its journey may not be finished - we would like to find someone researching this family. In the event we can't find a home for it, then it will go down into the Archives where it will be cared for, but probably never be seen again. What a shame that would be! It is a collection of items from the Hale and Spurr families of Penetanguishene and England, including estate information, newspaper clippings, photographs (some very old), funeral home visitation books, World War ll memorabilia, thank you cards, announcements etc. One could put together four or five generations of this family just from the material in the collection. Harry Hale - 1889 England - 1963 Penetanguishene Ada Spurr - 1887 England - 1971 Penetanguishene You won't have to answer a skill testing question to qualify as the new owner, but you will have to prove a connection to the family. 3. To all:- A mixture of vacations, plus very hard to read writing by the enumerators has slowed us down -- but there are many pages in British Columbia. One or two pages daily would help - I have HOW TO memos for anyone wishing to try his/her transcribing at http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/ Also the QUESTIONS near Sign-In have much information. Percentages:- ALBERTA...............................98.11% BRITISH COLUMBIA.............89.28% CAN-SASKATCHEWAN........99.31% [You can see British Columbia needs a few more pages done] Personally, I hope the three provinces will be 100% by Aug. 6, Civic Holiday in many places. Also, I leave for Nova Scotia on Aug. 8 until Aug 21 -- the only bits I want to do DownHome are corrections! One new transcriber is assisting Judy van der Veen in Prince Albert - as mentioned, addresses are added, NO surname or given name due to INK-- to date Garth Ulrich has connected about 75% of the families from the 1910 city directory, etc. IF ANYONE WORKS ON THOSE PAGES in Print Albert - DO NOT CLAIM as Judy, Garth and Jessie have their own system. We could have two provinces 100% next Friday - remember B.C. Thanks to all, including the original Visine Group! Muriel M. Davidson Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Brampton, ON

    3. Here is the info source on Adoptions in Ontario: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/geneal/genmajor.htm "Adoptions Until Ontario's Adoption Act (8 April 1921), guardianships (child custody without the right of inheritance) were granted through the Surrogate Court. While not listed in the Indexes, guardianship actions are recorded in the Registers, and later for some Counties, in separate Guardianship Books. For adoption files, you must contact the: Adoption Information Unit Ministry of Community and Social Services 2 Bloor Street West, 24th Floor Toronto, Ontario M7A 1E9 " If you can go to an LDS centre and view the film of the 1891 Census you could look for Tracy to see what surname is used and if there is a reference to his being adopted. By that you can pinpoint the time frame. You might also want to check this site for info on marriage registrations in Alberta. Having a copy of the marriage certificate or licence might also provide more information. http://www.afhs.ab.ca/registry/regab_marr.html ........... Cheers! 3. Hi; Thanks for your reply. I have the information you mention; Tracy's middle name is definitely Lawrence. His oldest boy, who also passed away from the Spanish flue in 1918 was named Lawrence Walker. I believe the "G" in the 1911 census was a mistake on the part of the enumerator. Can you tell me where I would go to search adoption records? regards, Tracy walker ----- Original Message ----- From: "D.O. 3. Knowing there is a good deal of interest - on this list - in inherited "defects" I thought I might just toss in a couple of things I happened to pick up about "colour blindness." After WWII, because of the development of the electronics industry, there was a lot of research done into color blindness, mostly resulting in improvements in our ability to detect and "measure" its effects. Certainly, red/green is the most common form but there are an almost infinite number of other color combinations that various people have difficulty distinguishing. So much so that (and this may be just hearsay) that it's possible that the majority of people are "color blind" in some way or another. Now I put "color blind" in quotes here because this includes perception difficulties in distinguishing one shade of a color from another, because - in the strictest sense - this is still color blindness. Fortunately there is far less reliance on color coding in the electronics these days, so work in the industry is not precluded to nearly as many as it used to be. One of the neatest color blindness tests I have ever seen consisted of a simple pack of cards, except they were not printed like normal playing cards each, instead, being a mass of colored dots. The colors of the dots and the pattern of them was carefully contrived so that depending on your particular version of color blindness you would be able to - or not - see a number made up of some of the dots - or even to see different numbers on the same card depending on your particular color distinguishing impediment. It was years ago that I saw these so I don't remember all the details, but I do know I was surprised to find out I was blind to one of the more subtle color combinations. It had never caused me any difficulties - nor has it to this day as far as I know, and I'm sure the knowledge might have been useful - if I hadn't forgotten it almost immediately! :-) On the other hand it might account for those endless "its blue / its green" arguments Chris and I have had about that strange shade of aquamarine. :-) Anyway, the point is that color blindness is not some rare, exotic, condition. There's a good chance you have it. And as to it being hereditary - if you are a member of the human race then yes, you probably have inherited the gene! As an afterthought to this message - I believe I was living in England when all this happened. It hadn't occurred to me before that this could be just a "British" condition but perhaps I should add a "your milage may vary" rider that I have no similar experience here in Canada - although I can't imagine why there would be a significant difference. 3. Good Morning: The 1881 Census shows Tracy Gilbert living with Thomas Walker and family and clearly the name Gilbert was used. The Ontario birth records through Ancestry.ca did not show anything recorded under Gilbert, Beatty or Walker. Mary-Ann was only 15 when Tracy was born and 1881 Census shows her as a student, while Hezikiah was 5 years older. You show Tracey's middle name as Lawrence, however the 1911 Census in Alberta shows "G" as his initial. Perhaps the adoption process was underway in 1881 and that is why subsequent documents show Tracy as Walker. There should be an adoption record and enough time has passed that it would be available... I think. Cheers! Hezekiah married Mary Anne McLean Beatty in 1885, but they had a child, my grandfather, Tracy Gilbert, born out of wedlock in 1880, at Stanton, Mulmur Twp. Tracy changed, or had changed, his surname, to Walker sometime after 1880, and appears on the 1901 Census of Mulmur as Tracey Walker, living with the John Ewing family, not far from Stanton. As far as I know, he never lived with his birth parents, though they were married and living close by and eventually had several more children. Instead, he was raised by his great uncle, Thomas Walker and wife Margaret, claimed them as his parents and took their surname. He appears on later census listings as Tracy Lawrence Walker and died in 1918 at Wetaskiwin AB. As far as I know, his birthname of Gilbert was not known to any of my immediate family, and all of his children -- my mother, aunts and uncle -- are now deceased. I would dearly like to know more about the facts of his birth, adoption and early life in Mulmur.
