Greetings All. In the last issue of my column, 'Gordon Watts Reports', I included an article relating to the reduction of manned service hours in Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa. The hours of 'manned' service were being reduced without there having been any known public consultation. It seems that someone in LAC listened to the concerns expressed by myself and others. Library and Archives Canada has extended an invitation to its clients to an informal discussion where they will be able to ask questions and obtain explanations on the latest changes related to client services. The session will be on September 19th from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in room "A" in 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa. Everyone is welcome to attend. I would urge anyone living in the Ottawa area that has concerns regarding the cutback in service hours at LAC to attend this meeting if possible. I would appreciate someone attending advising me as to what takes place at the meeting. Gordon A. Hi Wayne, I took a look at your pictures, and I'm in the "reflection" column I'm afraid. Reasons? As you say the stone has it's "back" to the Sun so the faces of all objects behind the camera will be brightly lit. The stone has been highly polished so even with the inevitable weathering it will still be highly reflective (well, "highly" when compared with a regular "cut" stone.) Without being able to see what was just behind where you took the picture from I would have to guess that there was a nice bright white tomb stone which was getting full sun and which you were seeing a reflection of. (Alternately, could there have been someone standing behind you dresses in light colored clothing?) A far less lightly explanation could be an image caused by the near head-on sunlight being bounced around in the lens of your camera. There's a fancy name for the effect which eludes me for the moment but basically it's when the camera lens is facing towards the Sun and a very pale, distorted, image of the Sun gets superimposed on the regular straight through image. Generally these "ghost" images are larger and appear to "float" over the actual picture where your "unknown" seems to be a part of the stone's image. It's not so rare to get these "unexpected" flaws in photographs. When we are taking the photograph we are concentrating on the details we want - in this case the writing I'd guess - and we tend to mentally edit out "irrelevant" variations in the background, or images which are on a very different scale. I think you'll see what I mean if you just look at your photo. You can either look at your ghost or you can look at the lettering. You can't concentrate on both at the same time. Malcolm PS: Have you thought about taking a large sheet of white cardboard or, better still, a large flat sheet of aluminum foil with you when you go head stone "prospecting?" You can use it to reflect light onto a shadowed stone's face (as in this case) or to cast an oblique light across the face of an incised stone to help the lettering to show up. It's not destructive or intrusive and shouldn't offend anyone. Archive CD Books Canada Inc. President: Malcolm Moody PO Box 11 Manotick Ontario, K4M 1A2 Canada. It reminds me of those books that were "in" during the 90s where you stared at pages of patterns/colours till you saw (or didn't see) the hidden picture. I can't remember what they were called. I have noted that this type of stone will show dry and wet areas in different hues and depth of colour. Sometimes wetting the stone will bring out the inscription better. This is one possibility that on your return would not be there. Did you try another photograph the second time? Christol
If the sun is behind the stone that means the camera was shooting into it. Likely camera's flash. In any case, I would never in 100 years come up with a child or an angel or anything of vaguely human form from the shape; it would be very very disproportionate, wouldn't it? I thought most "ghost photos" depicted ghosts, or the beginning of ghosts, around life-size, usually standing next to or behing something, not floating aimlessly in front of something & shrunk to the size of someone's head. ----- Original Message ----- From: "wcook" <wcook@rogers.com> To: <can-ont-simcoe@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 09, 2007 9:45 PM Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Ghost picture? > The first picture was enhanced and cropped in order to try and read it > better, you have to understand that this particular type of monument are > one > of the hardest to photograph because they wear very easy because of the > rain > and snow. Hello, Wayne, No, it would not be a reflection from the sun but could easily be a reflection of something you were wearing or was near to you when you took the picture. Sadly, this has happened to me a few times. Sorry - just not buying the ghost theory. Very much a reflection from another tombstone or some thing in white like another person nearby. You can tell because the sun is coming in from the front left of the camera. Granite reflects light very well and is often very hard to photograph. I get this sort of reflection all the time in my pictures. Most often when I try to take a photograph of a picture on a wall with a glass cover, I often get more of the room behind me than the picture in front even though my eyes tell me the picture is very clear. Almost all "special effects" in the movies - pre-computers used this sort of reflection to fool people into thinking "ghosts" were onscreen. But you could probably get a few bucks from the National Enquirer for it :-)) Heck there are numerous reality TV shows based on this sort of optical illusion. People running around with infra-red cameras jumping every time something goes thump! "OMG!! It's a GHOST!!!" nope it's Camera Techniques 101 and a clumsy sound man. Nelson
The first picture was enhanced and cropped in order to try and read it better, you have to understand that this particular type of monument are one of the hardest to photograph because they wear very easy because of the rain and snow. The sun is behind so there would be no relection on it. Well, I took a look, & I can't make out anything, certainly not a child or a halo or an angel. Obviously people will see whatever they want or expect to see in it (rather like seeing Jesus' face on toast), but it seems clear to me that it's either a reflection from the sun, or the camera flash, nothing more nor less. ----- Original Message ----- From: "wcook" <wcook@rogers.com> To: <CAN-ONT-SIMCOE@rootsweb.com> Cc: <ONTARIO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 09, 2007 5:58 PM Subject: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Ghost picture? > Hi List, > > Last week I was out photographing a cemetery on Fairgrounds Road just > southwest of Stayner called East Nottawasaga, when I got home and started > working on the photos I got this strange image of possibly a child and a > halo above its head.
