I am trying to reach Patricia Sherman regarding an entry on the database in her project, The Heart of Simcoe County (Ontario). The 'software at Yellowknife' e-mail address is being returned, but it appears that the list continues to be updated. Does anyone have a working address for the database listing? Sheila
If anyone is interested in helping with the planning of the 2008 Settler's Day events honouring the Drummond Island families, we would be delighted and grateful for your assistance. Our next meeting of the planning group is scheduled for Saturday, October 20th, 2007 at the Museum at 10:00AM. All are welcome to attend. This is a loosely formed group of interested people who are willing to give a hand with this event. It is not necessary to attend every meeting although it would be a good idea. We will keep you informed and add you to the mailing list. There is a lot of work to be done for what is being planned as THE event of 2008 in Penetanguishene and every pair of hands makes it that much easier for all of us. Meetings usually last about 2 hours and, if you want to make a day of it, the research room will be open for you for the rest of the day at no charge. A free afternoon (4.5 hours) of research - it doesn't get much better! It's a lovely time of the year here so drive on up, give us a voice and a hand at the meeting, bring a lunch to eat outside on the grounds and then spend a few hours researching in the books or on the computers. Thank you, Paul, for introducing this subject. Before you consider where you will leave your research perhaps a good starting point should be - what will I leave for others? I would suggest that since winter is cold, grey and long, it is a wonderful time to do some housecleaning of your files. You could very well come across something you have missed in the past. The end result will be neat, orderly and ready to pass on. Maybe one of your progeny might decide this 'mess' isn't so bad after all and store it for another generation or, wonder of wonders, take an interest in their family and keep it as a starting point for their own hobby. So once it is tidied up and manageable......where should it go? Family first and foremost - in whatever format you decide to give it to them. Paul's gifts are in our files and on our shelves; there for others as long as the museum exists. The families came from this area and this is where future generations will come to do their own research. We are proud to have his work. But not all facilities are the same. Space varies, preservation methods vary and access to researchers also varies. Think well before you donate all those years of work. Ask questions - where will it be kept, how will it be preserved and how easy will it be for future generations to get to it? Probably the last place you would want your work to go would be some basement, shoved in a corner and forgotten. Sad to say, this often happens. A few years ago, we were the recipients of 11 bankers boxes of scrapbooks. There is a wealth of material in them but without volunteers to index them, they are stored in the archives but they are not forgotten! How many times have you gone into a research facility, stumbled on someone's work by accident and found exactly what you had been looking for? It has happened to me and I have been very grateful to the facility and their volunteers for having the material front and centre. Some of the answers to your questions will determine the format of your donated work. Space is a very real problem for some institutions. But don't give up! Paper is not the only method of preserving your work. In fact, it may not be the best. Unless you have used quality paper and ink, the material may deteriorate in time, even under the best of conditions. Staples does it cheap, printers do it better, but not all of us have the money to pay for leather bound books on quality vellum. Another thing to consider is that research notes (not documents) can be too much paper and it may not be necessary to retain them forever. It is the end result of your research that is most important. I don't want to start a discussion on technology on this list but there are good methods of preserving your work that take up little space. CDs and DVDs fit the bill nicely. Software programs evolve, some even disappear and some are just not good enough, but all programs now have the capability of storing media files - old pictures, digital images, sound recordings and video. Everything about your family including notes and data - can be put on a CD or DVD, if you learn how to use your program. It is not a steep learning curve and your grandchildren can certainly help you with some of it. Think of it as teaching another generation the value of heritage and history. Subscribe to a mailing list for users of your software. Rootsweb has many. In time everything becomes obsolete but any good research facility will keep the equipment around that is necessary to view your work or they will transfer it to a newer format. Let them worry about keeping up with technological advances and ensuring your donation is there for your descendants. That takes care of later. But what about now? Paper burns and, as horrible as it may be to consider, if all your files are paper they can be lost in a minute. Consider copies to be stored elsewhere a safety deposit box or a relatives home. Do you back-up your computer work? Notes can be typed into a word processing program and saved. Data can be input to genealogy software programs. But if your computer crashes, boy, are you in trouble - unless you have backed-up your work or made copies for family members. Backups and GEDcoms, even with their limitations, can be saved on CD/DVD are easy to store. We would certainly have no problem keeping a copy for you now, or in the future. Remember one thing: back-ups can only be restored to the program in which it was created. The possibilities for the loss of your work are limitless but there are ways and places to ensure it is preserved. First and foremost is including the codicil to your will that Malcolm shared with us. I hope this helps someone searching for an Angus. I couldn't find "my" Angus GUNN in Bradford despite searching Ancestry.ca's 1911 census index in various ways. Finally, there he was --- alias "Angels GANN" -- among the GANNs and Mc GANNs (note the space between Mc and GANN -- another way to search for Mc surnames). Using the first name "Angels" as the only search term (Ancestry.ca's 1911 census index) yields 57 results. Many are Angelo (born Italy) and a few Angela, so probably not as hard to pin down as an Angus. Best wishes to all, Frances

Well Paul, good question! I've noticed a niece (hubbys side) has shared her fathers research (pre computer!) to the LDS site. I haven't checked it out to see how far she's shared with them. It's only fair of her being as her Dad started doing his research when they joined the LDS Church. She sent me 5 generations back to add to my information. I have no idea how far he'd gotten but heard rumors of his connecting to some woman that had lotsa bucks. I can't think how it's spelled but Anna 'Kajan' comes to mind and I know that's not correct. I don't have that part of his research and understand she's one of the people that folks love to try to connect to. I've shared with my cousins son and attempted to help him with his maternal lines. When I get my equipment all hooked up again, I'm printing off all I've found and giving notebooks of what I have, and photo albums I've had printed off, to my sister, brother, and three cousins. This cousin will get his copy and he can leave it to that son! Eventually I may share with the LDS. Seems a good spot to leave stuff and since they've been online, they've attempted to get more of their files online and free! (Supposedly in 30 years they'll have it all online!) Since Ancestry has been expanding their information, I've found quite abit there. I'm afraid I'm not a serious enough genealogist. I enjoy finding old information, correcting things as I find errors and can share the correct info (Lama Kevin is on Ancestry for Laura Kresin! Clear image! Lousy transcriber! Moms one Aunt.) Mom said her Grandmother had 5 babies in the old country but none lived. The ships manifest (via Ancestry) shows them arriving with two little ones AND Grandmothers PARENTS and one sister!!! No story of the GrGrGrands even being here!! The local Book of Deaths shows both given names of the little ones, mis-spelled surname (close enough to check out), along with another little one. Haven't gotten those copies yet to verify. A local woman was kind enough to share the information she was given with me. I took that to the printer and had it copied in bulk to add it to what I give away. It'll be in a section of it's own. Though the researcher and I are of the same mind, they're all related, neither of us have found that necessary link....YET! I've read online, that many libraries are now requesting digital copies of Genealogy due to lack of storage room. I would think the local genealogy societies is also a good place to share your research. My boys will be told where to share my information if I haven't already done so before THE END!! Hopefully they'll do as asked. Ruth

Paul Good point. What are others doing to preserve their years of work? I copied out the Genealogical Codicil and have added it to a list of our family holdings, lodged with our wills. The Codicil was published on the web a while back. It requests that all the deceased's research be handed over to which ever relative is interested in continuing the hunt. Failing that is suggests a list of Genealogical societies from the region that that portion of the family hails. I have also suggested/requested that alternately, my research be boxed and preserved until a relative decides to take up the hunt. That might even be an unborn child who comes along in another generation. What a treasure to be handed. Don't you wish you inherited research done in a couple of generations back!!! I did in one line. Done in the 1930's, it took me back to the 1700's. Paul: I too have found my way back to CHARLEMAGNE, the First HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR. So that makes us cousins, probably about 23rd cousins many times removed. Of course CHARLEMAGNE would have had more than a few descendants. We are not alone!!!! He is my 30 gg. I found this in Burke's Peerage. One of my ggg's had the good sense to marry a member of the BUTLER clan of Ireland. William the Conqueror is also an antecedent. He is my 22nd gg. Again He had more than a few descendants. So everyone. Decide what you are going to do with your stuff. Thanks Paul for raising this issue. Malcolm CAMPBELL PS I found a copy of the Codicil in my fabulous files: Genealogical Codicil to my Last Will and Testament or Trust: To my spouse, children, guardian, administrator and/or executor; Upon my demise it is requested the you DO NOT dispose of any or all of my genealogical records, both those prepared personally by me and those records prepared by others which may be in my possession, including but not limited to books, files, notebooks or computer programs for a period of two years. During this time period, please attempt to identify one or more persons who would be willing to take custody of the said materials and the responsibility of maintaining and continuing the family histories. (If you know whom within your family or friends are likely candidates to accept these materials, please add the following at this point: "I suggest that the persons contacted regarding the assumption of the custody of these items include but not be limited to" and then list the names of those individuals at this point, with their addresses and telephone numbers if known). In the event you do not find anyone to accept these materials, please contact the various genealogical organizations that I have been a member of and determine if they will accept some parts or all of my genealogical materials. (List of organizations, addresses, and phone numbers at bottom; include local chapters, with their addresses, phone numbers and contact persons if available as well as state - national contact information and addresses). Please remember that my genealogical endeavours consumed a great deal of time, travel, and money. Therefore it is my desire that the products of these endeavours be allowed to continue in a manner that will make them available for others for generations to come. *****************
Have recently been reviewing some old e-mails, originating from this List. The SUBJECT MATTER , was the Long String about AGE , and in particular, how long various respondents have been in the " FINDING FOLKS " Business. THIS BEGS THE QUESTION .. What are you ( the 100's genealogists on this List ) doing with your information , to ASSURE that your years of loving, kind, all-absorbing attention, IS NOT GOING TO DIE WITH YOU ????? The review of " average AGE " OF FOLKS ON THIS LIST , tells me that I have lots of Company, on the down-side of 75 !!!!!!!! GAD !!! In LESS THAN 25 YEARS, I WILL BE A Centurion!!!!! I am now PATRIARCH of the ROBINS CLAN . with 4 children, 12 Grandchildren, and 9 Great-Grandchildren ( and counting ) . Expect to have 28 Descendants by next APRIL FOOL'S DAY !!!!!!!!! SO, what do I do to disseminate the information that I have accumulated, on 3,000 + Ancestors of OUR CLAN ????? Periodically, for the past dozen years, I have produced a " book " , for our four children, with a copy for my sister, and my brother's Family. With one for "YOURS TRULY' a total of seven copies of each issue. Publication release was usually CHRISTMAS.. The books were printed, off the computer, one page at a time. Bound, by STAPLES, or others, they should survive normal wear and tear ! Subject matter was always Family Based, pictures, stories, essays, and material related to our particular Family. Additionally, I have produced , specific Ancestor ( to me ) books, for 0ur `MAYFLOWER LINEAGE ( Proven and Accepted ) .. a Maternal Lineage ; our U.E.L. Lineage ( Proven and Accepted ) .. a Paternal Lineage; and a Lineage for THE WINTHROP SOCIETY ( Maternal ), of which I am a Charter Member. If I really want to get carried away, I have the path ( laid out for me ) 42 Generations, back to CHARLEMAGNE, the First HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR !!!!!!!! You get going on these things and you never know where they may lead :-) Our Current Christmas Book will include some of (my) writings, a section of pictures on Family COUSINS .. first, second, third, fourth, and fifth .. PLUS VARIOUS Cousins, once, twice, or more removed !!!!! ( Just to confuse the thinking ) . I am tinkering with the idea of printing comparative photos, to prove Family Resemblances... how much a niece looks like my Mother, and a Granddaughter looks like my wife, and I look like a one-half Third Cousin, once removed , of mine. But, I digress ... I have verbally told my wife, in the event that she survives me, that all my books are to go to anyone in the Family who shows an interest in perpetuating my research. Failing that, I would like them lodged with either the PENETANG MUSEUM, or HURONIA MUSEUM ( in Midland ), both of whom have (some) copies of what I have already produced. The point of all this is . WHAT are others doing to insure that their studies are not lost to posterity !!!!! Paul Robins, U.E., Wasaga Beach, Ontario.
