    3. Hi Patricia:- Thanks for doing the extra checking -- we receive many messages and I agree with you - However, if you did not find Arthur John J Insley, [which you did not find] it could have been a marriage -- So, folks, lets work on this one and solve it. Welcome to Kevin Culp -- just wondering if you born in the same part of Canada I was. I am not spending as much time at the computer at present, but am walking in my room - plus walker outside of my room. I will also give this question a search -- wish we had censii for the "in-between" years -- we are now working on 1852. Muriel ----- Original Message ----- From: <software@yellowknife.com> To: "muriel m davidson" <muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca> Sent: Sunday, October 28, 2007 6:27 PM Subject: Arthur John J Insley and Ethel Beatrice (Webb) Insley Hi, Muriel: Please notice the subject line on this message. Perhaps this mailer doesn't know that we don't do "Roll Call" messages on this list, and a reminder may be in order. I did do a check of 1901 and 1911 censii, and didn't find the surname either as INSLEY, ANSLEY or AINSLEY, in Simcoe East. They're not in "The Heart of Simcoe County," so it appears that if they did settle in the area, it was well into the 20th Century. The closest I came to any match at all was an Ethel WEBB, born 1881 in Innisfil Twp. This seems to be a message pertaining more to adoption than to genuine genealogy, and not by one of our regular list members, but I may be wrong about that assessment. Anyhow, I really appreciate all the work you do in keeping this list mostly free of roll-calls and similiar less than useful content. Thank you so much, Patricia -------------------- Original Message -------------------- Subject: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] ROLL CALL: Arthur John J Insley and Ethel Beatrice (Webb) Insley. 1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] A $10.00 Bill Bit of History -- May be passed on

    3. THE VETERAN ON THE CANADIAN TEN DOLLAR BILL If you have a Canadian $10 dollar bill, look at the back right side of the bill You will see an old veteran standing at attention near the Ottawa War Memorial. His name is Robert Metcalfe and he died last month at the age of 90. That he managed to live to that age is rather remarkable, given what happened in the Second World War. Born in England, he was one of the 400,000 members of the British Expeditionary Force sent to the mainland where they found themselves facing the new German warfare technique - the Blitzkrieg. He was treating a wounded comrade when he was hit in the legs by shrapnel. Enroute to hospital, his ambulance came under fire from a German tank, which then miraculously ceased fire. Evacuated from Dunkirk on HMS Grenade, two of the sister ships with them were sunk. Recovered, he was sent to allied campaigns in North Africa and Italy. Enroute, his ship was chased by the German battleship, The Bismarck. In North Africa, he served under General Montgomery against the Desert Fox, Rommel. Sent into the Italian campaign, he met his future wife, a lieutenant and physiotherapist in a Canadian hospital. They were married in the morning by the mayor of the Italian town, and again in the afternoon by a British padre. After the war, they settled in Chatham where he went into politics and became the warden (chairman) of the county. At the age of 80, he wrote a book about his experiences and on his retirement he and his wife moved to Ottawa. One day out of the blue he received a call from a government official asking him to go down town for a photo-op. He wasn't told what the photo was for or why they chose him. "He had no idea he would be on the bill," his daughter said. And now you know the rest of the story of the old veteran on our $10 bill. Posted by Dorothy qbc-montre@rootsweb.com Ottawa Muriel M. 1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] BICKELL - BIRD
    2. Janet Bush
    3. Hello everyone, I have posted this before but hope someone will now respond. I have an invitation to a wedding between William James BICKELL and Bertha Louise BIRD on 4 Oct 1893 in Barrie, Ontario . It was addressed to my grandfather Henry Bruce YOUNG - Henry's brother Wilson Yates YOUNG was a witness. I don't know their connection/relationship to the bridal couple - likely friends. Bertha was born 3 Jul 1870 in Barrie to Henry BIRD & Elizabeth MONTGOMERY. After Bertha and William married, they had these children in Toronto: Margaret Muriel BICKELL 17 Mar 1895, William Albert Bird BICKELL 3 Sep 1896, and Gertrude Elizabeth Bertha BICKELL 10 Aug 1898. William James was a leather merchant in Toronto in 1901. By 1911 the family is at 1025 Broadway W, Vancouver: William BICKELL 43, wife Bertha 40, daur Margaret 16, son Albert 14, daur Gertrude 12, father-in-law Henry BIRD 80 widower, sister-in-law Margaret J. BIRD 52. If this information looks familiar and you are related (particularly a descendent), you are welcome to have the wedding invitation for your genealogical collection. Please contact me off list with BICKELL-BIRD in the subject line. Regards, Janet (Ontario, Canada)

There is an Emma 1910 - 1954 and I am wondering if she could be another sibling. Couldn't seem to find the family on the 1911 census to check. 3. Is there anyone on the list researching the Ballantyne family? I'm looking for a final resting place for the following: James Albert Ballantyne b. abt 1879 in Collingwood and his wife Elizabeth "Lida" Robertson b. 11 Feb 1874 in Flos Twp, Sim. Co. I know they were married 5 Oct, 1903 in Barrie and that they had 2 (that I know of) children: Albert Merrill and Jean. Elizabeth aka Lida/Lydia would be my great grand Aunt and I'd like to fill in this last blank on their family. Many thanks! Chris
