    1. Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] CAN-ONT-SIMCOE Digest, Vol 4, Issue 203
    2. Patricia A. Rogers
    3. Hi Pam, In regards to the Special and going from Staynor to Toronto I wonder if he was working at one of the hospitals, rehab centres, light industry, etc.? I have run into several cases, in my military research, that the overseas deployment was held up while they finished out a particular task - be it farming, some industrial work, hospital orderly, etc, etc. Sometimes at the end of the period the person was discharged to go back to his job for the war effort, as a civilian, rather than go overseas. By having him Attest they met the requirements of the Military Services Act and once having fulfilled the requirements could move people around. Not everyone was cut out for overseas and your young man may have been needed more on the home front. Although everyone of a certain age etc. was eligible for conscription they did have some leeway after the requirement was met. One case I remember was a young man, a labourer, who seemed to be in the same circumstances. He had a knack for gardening and being helpful and kind around some of the returning wounded at one of the Toronto hospitals. He was of more value in Toronto than in France. Hope that helps. As Ever, Pat ______________________________________________________________________ Keepers of the Flame www.54thbattalioncef.ca  www.102ndbattalioncef.ca  Patricia A. Rogers       P.O. 3. Pam, The attestation papers are only the front and back of the page filled out when an individual signed up. In order to get the details of his service, you have to order the complete records from LAC. Full records vary from person to person, it is not consistent, but generally you will at the least find the detailed log kept which will show the person's activities during his/her time in the military Thus you should see where he was on various dates, why he was there and when and why he left. For help with this, see FINDING A MILITARY ANCESTOR at The Canadian Military Heritage Project website at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canmil/ancestor.htm Scroll down the page til you see World War 1 This is a free site Lorine Lorine > ----- Original Message ---- > From: Pam Tessier <[email protected]> > To: Simcoe List <[email protected]> > Sent: Tuesday, June 16, 2009 12:07:12 PM > Subject: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] military questions > > A few questions for the military buffs out there............. > > - why would SPECIAL be stamped on Attestation papers? > > - fellow enlisted April 1916 according to his Attestation papers. > He was also drafted October 1917and his draft document states he had 6 > months of service as a private previously. 3. I don't know whether this will shed any light on the "military question". but thought I would send it anyway. During World War II, a cousin of mine was in the army. He became a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Infantry Corp, but at that time they did not have enough men for his position. He as given the option of going on "temporary permanent leave,", until they needed him, or tranferring to the British Army. He chose the British army, and was serving as a CANLOAN Officer with the Durham Light Infantry, when, shortly after D-day he stepped on a mine near Caen, France. He is buried at Hottot-les-Bagues War Cemetery, Calvados, France. Just thought maybe the person you were asking about, might have had a similar option, after his training. If they did this also in World War I. Georgiana

    1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] PERAULT, Joseph Daniel
    2. Pam Tessier
    3. I cannot seem to locate the above fellow in the usual records. He was drafted in 1917 and claimed to be the son of Delia PERAULT, born 27th January 1886 in Lafontaine. Delia was living in Victoria Harbour in 1917 and Joseph Daniel was living in Hamilton when he was drafted. I suspect his parents are Delia Forget and Francois Perrault, living in Tay Township in 1901 and earlier in Midland. The baptisms of a few of their children are in the Ste. Croix church records but there is no baptism for a son named Joseph Daniel. Nor is there a birth registration for this child. I'd like to connect him to a local (Penetang area) family, if possible so any help would be appreciated. Pam
