I saw a transcription of Mary Austin's gravestone that said she was from County Armagh. That is part of the problem, as the Lowry's all seemed to have the same first names, even though they were from different families. There were two John Lowry's - one married to Mary Austin, and another married to Elizabeth. John and Elizabeth had a son John who married Catherine Hoey. They had a daughter Rachel who married a Davis. I believe the John and Elizabeth Lowry is part of my branch. Ann Lowry, who is listed as a daughter of Robert in the 1821 Irish census, is living with Rachel Davis in 1881. Anyway, it is good to get information from all Lowry relatives, to try and straighten out the tangled vines! It sounds like the Austin's were quite well to do! I visited this site last year prior to the majority of the stones being power washed. It is a very peaceful, tranquil place. I was also able to get a copy of my great aunt's file going through the Government of Ontario web site. It was very inexpensive to do this. The information and letters were wonderful. What was the survival rate at that time? I have someone who died of "appendicitis" and her husband who died a year later of cancer of the appendix because he refused to have the operation that killed his wife (so the family legend goes). You may have just provided an important clue to solving this mystery. Similar story with my grandfather. He enlisted in 1914 and was discharged in 1917 due to chronic appendicitis, which he was unwilling to have operated on (given the survival rate at the time, who can blame him). He was drafted in early 1918 and shipped overseas, seeing action in France before the end of the war. He ended up with two serial numbers and a rather disjointed set of papers.

I have the papers of a relative who enlisted in 1916 & then after 6 months in the service was discharged as medically unfit & then erroneously was called back up in 1918 & medically discharged in 1918. So it does happen Bonnie
Yes, it was that kind of hospital. Below are links to photos and the transcribed notes. Heather B. Should be able to help you. Thanks for the church website link to the names in the cemetery. Wayne Cook does have a number of cemeteries of Simcoe with pictures at http://www.waynecook.com/Tombstone_Territory.html. Fairvalley is not (yet) one of them. Hopefully if pictures are taken it can be added to that collection. My thanks to all those who replied to my questions about the Attestation and Draft papers. You had some very good and logical reasons why the word Special would have been stamped on a fellow's papers and why there would have been a discharge from the service and then a draft notice issued later for another fellow. I have lucked out and discovered that the husband of one of our volunteers is a former military man with a huge library and interest in all things military. Hopefully, he will be able to come up with some explanations also. Pam
