Author: kikoamoki Surnames: DIXON, BRECKON Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.ontario.simcoe/2685/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am not related to this family but have the transcript of a letter written by John Dixon to R. Frankland in Whitby, North Yorkshire from 1832 in regards to their journey to Canada in 1832 onboard the "Columbus". From the remarks in the letter I have been able to determine a rough outline of the family. This John Dixon married Ann Breckon in Whitby on April 5, 1809. They had a son Breckon Dixon baptized in Whitby on July 27, 1821. There is also mention of a John, and Jane. From checking the IGI for additional children I came up with a Mary possibly in 1828 and a William (2 possibilities 1815 and 1824). My specific interest in this family is that in another letter to a George Dixon in Darlington, Yorkshire written shortly after the first letter he talks about going to see my great great great grandfather William Harrison in nearby Peel County to visit. It seems that John Dixon was a shoemaker and was looking for a place to settle. He describes William Harrison in the letter as "a distant relation of ours". It is this relationship that I am interested in. I can't find Breckon Dixon in the 1852 Canadian Census but there is a Breckon Dixon buried in the Lavendar Cemetery in Simcoe County. He dates are 1852-1927. So he could be a son of the Breckon Dixon who was born in 1821. Thank you Michael Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. George Wilson was a retired officer in the Royal Navy who owned Marchburn Farm in the Coldwater River Valley. Wilson was born in 1802 and died 27 October 1889. He settled about 1831 and later represented Medonte and Flos when the Simcoe District Council was established. In 1844 when Flos was represented separately, he continued to represent Medonte. His journals give us an idea of what our own Simcoe County ancestors experienced in those early days. The copies we have cover 1838, 1841, 1844, parts of 1849 and 1850. The numbers represent the day of the month. August 1838 3-Finished mowing. got all the hay secured in good order. 8-Cut down part of the barley at Hillside. A poor crop. 17-Cut down the pease. got them in good condition. 20-Commenced cutting down the wheat. a very good crop. August 1841 Much the same crops and activities as in 1838. I will be glad to send you more information in a week or so. Anyway, here is the information on the Lowry weddings in Ireland: The Lowry's were supposedly all the children of George and Elenor Lowry - see my postings on this board for the 1821 census information. Jane Lowry married William Strong November 13, 1803 Parish of Kildrumferton, County Cavan. Church of Ireland Robert Lowry married Eliza Magovren (believe it should be McGovern) February 15, 1810 Parish of Kildrumferton (Robert and Elizabeth were the parents of Charles and Anne, both of whom came to Simcoe County) John Lowry married Elizabeth Pyle June 22, 1819. Parish of Kildrumferton (parents of John Lowry who married Catherine Hoey) John Lowry Sr. died in 1837, it appears Elizabeth was still living in 1861. George and Elinor had another son William, who is supposed to be the father of my great great grandfather George Lowry, but I have not confirmed that yet. 1. [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] William Carter of Penetanguishene
    2. Pam Tessier
    3. Listers, Time for an update on the Carter family query. If you remember, my original questions concerned William Carter and Jennie Taylor, residents of Penetanguishene for 40 years and, in particular, the search for William's parents, William and Sarah. They were alleged to have been a Black family on the 1901 census. Before writing to the list, I try to make sure I have my 'homework' done. As mentioned earlier in my query, we had copies for the original census returns from 1881 to 1911 for this family but thanks to those who sent them again. I was not aware of the Black community in London and will certainly look into this. John Brown is, of course, a prominent name in the abolitionist movement. Expanding the search to the Middlesex list was next on my to-do list. I was in Dresden just last week and visited the Josiah Henson (Uncle Tom) settlement at Dawn. Most of the families who lived there are well documented. I highly recommend visiting it - a bit off the usual 401 path but worth the trip. Raleigh Township in Kent County is where my ancestors settled when they came from England and Ireland in the early 1800s. In fact, the Irish contingent lived in Charing Cross and Buxton, next door to the Black settlement, so I am familiar with that area. It became a bit of a challenge when researching the Brown family (my maiden name) as the 'brown' Browns and the 'white' Browns used the same names for their children. Very few records, other than census returns, mention race but they do name names. We will contact the museums and historical societies in that area and post a query to the Kent list. There is no 1830 census for Simcoe County. The 1871 census could be a help and we are searching through it again. His mother's name is Sarah at his birth in 1846 but that may not be the name of the woman with whom his father is living in 1871. Wives come and go but fathers' names remain the same - if he is alive in 1871. Lots of William Carters out there. Problems, problems! I am familiar with the Oro Settlement and again, the people who received the original grants are documented. Those of you who have read my Black History month stories of the Davenports of Simcoe County will know he was among the original settlers in Oro and later in Hillsdale. Grey Roots Museum is one of my favourite places in Simcoe County and I visit it often as my daughter and her family live in OS. They do indeed have a great display of Black history material and artifacts and..... a fabulous research area! The collections manager is the former curator/manager of the Penetang Museum and you should see what she has done there! Of all the places where it was suggested I look, this area is the closest Black settlement area to Sunnidale where William Carter met Jennie Taylor. I have been playing the Devil's Advocate on this search but I think there is a good possibility that a very clever enumerator has made an astute observation and the family does indeed have Black origins, albeit many generations back in time. Proof would be very nice indeed but every person in one's ancestry is worthy of our attention and respect, no matter what their origins. Just being able to continue the line back in time would be very nice. Thanks to all who responded. Pam

    3. ORO, in Spanish, means GOLD . I am told. The last, black family, in ORO , was living on the Second Concession, of ORO, just above what is now a GOLF COURSE, IN THE LATE MONTHS OF 1940. I REMEMBER WELL, my Mother driving us past the Family Home, and seeing the old couple, sitting on the front steps, of the house. No porch. It was my first exposure to `` people of colour `` . We had just previously moved to Oro, from Coldwater, Ontario ( in Medonte, about 20 miles, as the crow flies. ) My Mother, a Public School Teacher, was steeped in History. Paul Robins -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of catherine campbell Sent: July-26-09 10:18 PM To: simcoe rootsweb Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] CARTER family I was just wondering - if William Carter's parents, William and Jenny, were married in Angus in 1872, born in Canada, could THEIR parents have been part of the black community in nearby Oro? In 1819 the government sponsored a black settlement in Oro, along Wilberforce Street, one concession east of the Penetanguishene road and offered lots to the "Men of Color" who had served in the War of 1812. The census of 1831 show a black population of 97 in 1831 and 64 in 1848, with a peak of 101 in 1860-61, but by 1901 the numbers were down to about 1831. Many of the black settlers sold their land and moved elsewhere. "Some moved into the local towns such as Barrie and Collingwood; others went to the southern parts of the province or returned to the United States" Since Angus, where William and Jenny were married in 1872, is just a few miles from the (then) Oro, they and their parents could well have been among the first black settlers in Oro (the name Oro, by the way, comes from ! the Rio del Oro, a river and settlement in the north-west coast of Africa. It was reportedly given this name, due to the intent to set apart this township, or a part of it, as a colony for men of colour). Also, the colony was beside the Penetanguishene Road, which went directly to Penetanguishene, so a logical place to move to. It might be worth checking out the census for Oro in the 1830s and on for the names Carter and Taylor to see if this is a possible connection. (I have the book "the Story of Oro", since my own ancestors settled in Oro in 1831 from Ireland.) Apparently the African Episcopal Church, erected in 1849 and renovated one hundred years later, "still stands as a memorial to an episode in the early settlement and history of Upper Canada". "The Oro Township community is unique in that it was the only black settlement sponsored by the government in Ontario." 3. Pam I saw pictures as well and was certainly baffled by the enumerator's account. I sure hope you can find info and put all this to rest. xoxo Sandy > ------------------------------ > > Message: 4 > Date: Sun, 26 Jul 2009 10:34:42 -0400 > From: Pam Tessier <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Carter family > To: [email protected] > Message-ID: <[email protected]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed > > Sandy, > > There is a clear copy of the 1901 census on Ancestry.ca and it reads as > follows: > > Ontario, East Simcoe, Tiny Township > Line 13, 84-84 Carter, William, male, B (the original letter(s) has been > overwritten), Head, married, May 22, 1847, 53, born Ont., African, Can., > Presby., sawyer, mother tongue English > > In the margin, very faint, is written the notation: negro origin. > His children are all recorded with the letter B as above and their > origin is also African. They married in 1803 in Kildrumferton Parish, County Cavan Ireland. They emmigrated to the West Gwillimbury area. Their children were William, George (those two moved to South Carolina), John, Ellen (married James Jones of Innisfil), Margaret married William Graham, lived in Haldimand County, and Eliza Jane who married Thomas Timmons. I have names of a lot of William and Jane's grandchildren, but I am looking for someone connected to this family. Jane was the sister of Robert Lowry, who was in Nottawasaga in the 1861 census, and John Lowry (married to Eliza Pyle). This John was the father of John Lowry/Lowery who married Catherine Hoey. As you know I have been photographing cemeteries for Waynes site. I am going to be hanging up the camera due to cancer. If anyone resides near a cemetery that you could kindly photograph for Wayne, we'd both really appreciate it as would our fellow researchers. There are a few that Wayne is working on at the moment, so if you check with him before you start, that would be great. God willing I hope to continue at some point. In the meantime best to all Cheers Heide _________________________________________________________________ Stay in the loop and chat with friends, right from your inbox! http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9671354 ***************** Ten People All Genealogists Should Follow On Twitter: http://tr.im/hBAy Simcoe Co.
