    3. 999 Queen St. West was a standing joke as you say Jani. Yep if you did anything off the wall you were going to 999 Queen St. Everything today is to get them fixed and out in a day it seems. A stay in hosp to have a baby was 10 days...Now it's like 24 hrs. It's sad mentally ill are living on the streets. Sanitorium/Instution whatever the label I wasn't aware the one on Hamilton Mountain use to house TB patients until I did my family tree and discovered my mom was a patient there for 2 years. I wish those records was online. xoxo Sandy From: Jani Carless <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] With reference to - WILLIAMS, William Elwood & SCOTT, George Buster To: Simcoe List <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi Paul and Pam, I lived in west end Toronto in the late '60s. Twice daily I passed this sad place on the streetcar, to and from work. Red Brick, flat fronted, and turn-of-the-century institutional-looking, it is forever etched in my memory. Of course, the sorry joke in Toronto at the time, if one did anything odd or mistaken, was that they would be sent to '999' (Queen St. West). Even sadder was the closing of many of these institutions (however inadequate), including '999', by the Harris government in the early 1990's, forcing many very ill people to live under bridges. But now I am getting into political comment and beyond the scope of this list. Regards Jani

    2. John,   If you could make your way to either the Land Registry Office for Simcoe County or the Provincial Archives in Toronto and look at the Abstract Index for Concession 10 Lot 2 Essa Township you would find out how they acquired the lot.  The index will list all the activity on the lot from the time it was patented by the Crown to the most current date that is available.  At both locations the index will be on microfilm that you can freely access.  As well, at both locations there are staff that can help you.  The benefit of going to the source, is the other documents that go hand in hand with the land records.  If you're lucky, sometimes there are more interesting comments and documents (ie wills) noted on the index.  It's worth the treck.   PS. There is an excellent book "A Guide to Ontario Land Registry Records" out out by the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1994 that explains the process and documents well.  Also, the May 2007 issue of SCAN, the quarterly publication of the Simcoe County Branch of the Ontario Genealogial Society explained these land documents as they pertain to Simcoe County.  It's on the shelves at both the Barrie Public Library and the North York Public Library.    Hope this helps, Nancy   --- On Sun, 8/9/09, John Ausman <[email protected]> wrote: From: John Ausman <[email protected]> Subject: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Essa Township To: [email protected] Received: Sunday, August 9, 2009, 1:55 PM Hello folks: I just joined this list and am wondering if anyone is familiar with early pioneers in Essa. 3. The 1861 Canadian Census for Essa Township, Simcoe County shows an Alexander Stewart, born about 1859 in Upper Canada, religion was Episcopal. Details can be found in Archives Canada film No. C-1072. Perhaps they did not own the land but instead were tenant farmers. Cheers! Coming from a Pure White, and Protestant Corner of Ontario, the first non-white that I ever encountered was a Japanese-Canadian, Shigaro, who with his Family had been displaced from the West Coast, in 1942. We became good friends, for the short time that he was in Ontario. The first coloured teenagers, with whom I crossed paths, were "Hostellers", on bicycles, passing thru' Shanty Bay, Ontario. The two girls, light-skinned, as I remember, were the most gorgeous creatures, that God ever graced his Green earth with !!! Their companions, two boys, were somewhat darker. One had blonde hair, and the other red hair, both natural, not coloured. The date was 1947-1948. It was an experience that has remained with me, all these years. We have a Great-Grandchild, of mixed blood, a happy little guy, who fits in well with his 12 cousins ( on our side ), of Italian, Austrian, Hungarian, Dutch, English, Irish, and Scottish Ancestry. Have to go . The kitten just stepped on my keyboard, and erased a lot of what I intended to say .......... The old Census taker perhaps didn't have the opportunities opened up to later Generatiions. 3. Hi 999 Queen St not only had people with mental disorders in it. In the 50's and possibly even later the Toronto Children's Aid Society used it as a dumping ground for the kid's that they had run out of resources' for. The theory behind that was that if they could not get along in foster homes they had a mental problem. It was either that or they were charged as incorrigible and sent to Reform School which was an actual prison for under 21's. The kids that were sent to Queen St were there until they "behaved" with punishments of hydro therapy (being tied into a bath tub full of water) or electric shock treatment. The majority of these kids were at the rebellious age of 12 to 16 years old. The kids that went to the reform school were usually kept there until they were 21 and of course by that time they learned all the things that they shouldn't of. This was not generally known and most that this happened to kept it a secret due to the stigma attached. But it is a fact. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul and Ruth Robins" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 06, 2009 12:56 PM Subject: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] With reference to - WILLIAMS,William Elwood & SCOTT, George Buster > Pam ..........
