    3. Hi List, First, my apologies. I made an assumption about what info. WVR were wanting from looking at their registration panel (the "*" usually means "must have" making the rest optional. Apparently NOT in this case.) So they do want your contact info. etc. but not a credit card. Second: You may experience a problem going back to sign up for a second time. Here is the text of an answer I gave to several people who have been unable to get back to the 3 day free trial sign up panel for a second time: "WVR seem to have set their cookies in your machine so that if you visited them recently then you can't access the three day free offer. If you are comfortable with the process you can try deleting your WVR cookies and try again. I've already advised a couple of people to do this and they were successful BUT please only try it if you are COMFORTABLE deleting cookies as I will not be able to help you if you accidentally delete something you need. If you are not comfortable deleting cookies I suggest you call WVR and tell them what your problem is. After all it's only fare that you let them know what chaos they are creating, isn't it? :-)" Again my apologies for misleading you (I already had an account with them so didn't want to sign up for the 3 day free in case it messed up my regular registration.) We have a limited view of activity on WVR and I'm guessing that quite a few of you DID gain access OK and had a look around. Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc. 3. Hi John, You are welcome. I noticed that on the 1861 census for Essa, they give the actual date of marriage of the parents. Since the children are born in Upper Canada, it may help if you check the birthdate of the eldest child to give you a close estimate of when they arrived in Canada. I have found birth locations for parents sometimes in baptismal records. Also, if you find death registrations, especially the later ones, they sometimes give the mother and father's birthplaces. Hopefully, they don't just say 'Ireland'. Lynne. > From: John Ausman <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Stewart Family > To: [email protected] > Message-ID: <[email protected]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 > > Thank you Lynne. Yes, I already had the census records, which is why I knew where they lived in Essa. I am trying to identify land records partly to determine when they arrived (and perhaps origin in Ireland). I will be checking out the Abstract Index for the land at the Ontario Arcvhives. Cheers, John _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive email from all of your webmail accounts. http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9671356

    3. Peel County has a fantastic Archives in Brampton. Peel OGS has a great online site. Sunnidale Twp. is with in driving distance of Toronto. Barrie also has wonderful resources. Simcoe OGS also has a great on line site and Wayne Cook has posted many Gravestones in Simcoe County. With a week you could cover all three areas. Have you considered posting the names you are interested in, someone may be able to give you a better idea of where to look for cemetery records. I'd have been bewildered by two stones for one ancestress, but the records showed she had a leg buried long before she died. If I can visit Ontario, will cemetery records be available? What sort of information will they have? Where are newspaper archives kept to look for obits? Besides land patents and wills, are there other sources? If I have a week, and have ancestors from Sunnidale in Simcoe, Chicauagousy and Albion in Peel, and Zorra in Oxford, can I hope to research them all? > Date: Sun, 9 Aug 2009 15:20:26 -0700 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Essa Township > > John, > > If you could make your way to either the Land Registry Office for Simcoe > County or the Provincial Archives in Toronto and look at the Abstract > Index for Concession 10 Lot 2 Essa Township you would find out how they > acquired the lot. 3. Hello, My Duncan Cameron came to Oro in 1836 and did not appear in any Land Patent Records. The always rented and the early assessments contain the name and location of renters as well as owners He did appear in the Oro Township assessment records from 1839 on and the only official land record is a lease his son signed in 1861. . The official Ontario Assessments didn't start until about 1851, but there is a Clerk's Book for Oro with much the same information starting from 1835 at the Simcoe County Archives. You might find the information you are looking for in Essa Township there. Marjorie Cameron McQuay. 3. I have an Alexander Stewart of Tecumseth (b.1845 d. 1876).  Married Elizabeth Ann Ausman in Tecumseth 1875-She later married William McDermott. In both marriage and death resistry Alexander's father is listed as Garred Stewart of Tecumseth.  One source says Alexander was born in Ireland the other in Ontario.  Not sure of the geography of where Essa is in relation to Tecumseth but maybe you can use the info.. good luck. S., age 6 and Alexander, age 85 (his wife, Ann, is also listed). On the 1861 census, John, age 10 and Alexander, age 12 are listed with Andrew and Annabella.  There are Wills available for both John and Alexander when they died in 1925 and 1914 respectively.  Both died in the town of Thornton and Alexander's place of birth is given as Tecumseth. There are no Stewart's listed on the 'Settlers Before 1837'  ('A History of Simcoe County, by Andrew F. Hunter') list for Essa but there is an Alex Stewart in Tecumseh on Concession 6, Lot 19. On the 1871 census for Essa Township, John W W (found on the same page as Andrew and family in 1861) is found with his wife, children and Ann, age 94. Hope this is of some help. 3. When I visited cemeteries in Duluth and Superior, the records at the cemetery office had extra information -- who was responsible for the burial at a minimum. > Date: Sun, 9 Aug 2009 15:20:26 -0700 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Essa Township > > John, > > If you could make your way to either the Land Registry Office for Simcoe County or the Provincial Archives in Toronto and look at the Abstract Index for Concession 10 Lot 2 Essa Township you would find out how they acquired the lot. The index will list all the activity on the lot from the time it was patented by the Crown to the most current date that is available. At both locations the index will be on microfilm that you can freely access. As well, at both locations there are staff that can help you. The benefit of going to the source, is the other documents that go hand in hand with the land records. If you're lucky, sometimes there are more interesting comments and documents (ie wills) noted on the index. It's worth the treck. > > PS. There is an excellent book "A Guide to Ontario Land Registry Records" out out by the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1994 that explains the process and documents well. Also, the May 2007 issue of SCAN, the quarterly publication of the Simcoe County Branch of the Ontario Genealogial Society explained these land documents as they pertain to Simcoe County. It's on the shelves at both the Barrie Public Library and the North York Public Library. > > Hope this helps, > Nancy > > > --- On Sun, 8/9/09, John Ausman <[email protected]> wrote: > > > From: John Ausman <[email protected]> > Subject: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Essa Township > To: [email protected] > Received: Sunday, August 9, 2009, 1:55 PM > > > Hello folks: I just joined this list and am wondering if anyone is familiar with early pioneers in Essa. 3. Thank you Lynne. Yes, I already had the census records, which is why I knew where they lived in Essa. I am trying to identify land records partly to determine when they arrived (and perhaps origin in Ireland). I will be checking out the Abstract Index for the land at the Ontario Arcvhives.
