Ancestry farmed the Drouin out to the Chinese to index......With their unique way of talking English, no wonder the index is flawed....... They probably mean the horrible job Ancestry did of indexing Drouin....Ancestry's indexing has never been great in English, but in French it's even worse. And they don't bother to actually read the entries...most Drouin records have an abbreviated form of the person's name in the margin & the full name in the entry, but Ancestry only indexes the abbreviated form, & frequently gets it wrong. Among other things, I've seen "Marg.," short for Marguerite, indexed as "Mary" over & over. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharlene Bell-Haussmann" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 30, 2009 10:38 AM Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-SIMCOE] Drouin Collection & Ancestry problems Dang, I didn't realize how addictive the Drouin was until I couldn't access it yesterday.....It is a lifeline to our ancestors. There have been some questions raised recently about difficulty with accessing the Drouin Collection on Ancestry. But Ancestry has not completely done so as of yet, and the Drouin collection seems to still be accessible. Will it still be after September 1st....? Now, there's the real question! > > For those of you who read French: > http://www.institutdrouin.com/avis180809.pdf > > There you have it." Cheers! Hello Listers, I'm trying to place the obit for a Garnet Payne son of David Payne. He died in August of 1937 at Foxmead. The obit says Garnet was 13 years old and died by falling on a pitchfork while working on his farm. The article mentions surviving relatives: a sister Mrs. A. Beers, brothers Gordon and Earl all of Lindsay and 4 sisters Alice, Irene, Bernice and a baby at home as well as two brothers Frank and William at home. Interment was at St. Andrew's cemetery in Orillia. I am trying to determine if Garnet and his father David Payne were descendants of David Payne and his wife Sophia Turner. Does anyone have any info regarding the above family? Thanks for any information. Gwen Cunningham
Could we please change the subject line as the topic has strayed far from the 38th Battalion? Perusing the archives of this list and seeing the reference to the 38th may cause people who could help you in your search to just bypass the messages. And those who might be interested in the 38th, but not in your present topic, might get a trifle upset after opening so many messages just to find they have no bearing on the 38th. And one other thing; please, please delete the previous messages when replying! Hitting reply doesn't eliminate all the previous replies or the entire digest, you have to highlight and delete. Thanks, Cranky Pam
Anyone know what happened to the Drouin Colleciton on Ancestry.com. Sharlene
The Halls I know, emigrated from England, some settled in Scarboro, Ontario, later some married and moved further to the West in Ontario, one moved to Saskatchewan or Manitoba, descendants now live in USA. Some married Cowans in Ontario. There is a Bob Cowan on Channel ll TV or 6 maybe CTV, off the air and along with him a ? Hall female, who do the news and interviews in the mornings. Bob Cowan looks like my Hall (Male) family, so I am thinking he may be from my English Family. They may originate in the Hamilton, Ontario Area? I do not know about the ? Hall female.
