Hi All, It is that time of the year again - Festival time! Festival du Loup is being held in Lafontaine on July 16, 17, 18. Check out the website for details: http://www.festivalduloup.on.ca/home.htm The website has some great photos of the original settlers and their families and I can guarantee you will see many more if you take in this event. This year the families being honoured are MARCHILDON, MOREAU, TESSIER AND COURTEMANCHE. I have had the pleasure of spending the last 10 months working on the Tessier and Courtemanche families' books and if you descend from any of these honouree families, the material collected (documents, reference books, photos) will make you positively ecstatic. The Courtemanche book has some remarkable pictures of the family contributed by a Simcoe List subscriber in Florida. Incidentally, the Penetanguishene Museum has a collection of Moreau information obtained by donation a few years ago. It is the largest collection of Moreau material anywhere in North America. The Penetanguishene Museum will be present, as we have been every year. I volunteer my time and work on these books for the Penetanguishene Museum so we will have the books and CDs available for sale by prepaid order. A portion of each sale from orders received during Festival will be donated to the Festival committee to assist in the building of their own museum. Take a trip to beautiful Tiny Township and stop in and visit us in the quaint village of Lafontaine - one of the few remaining French speaking villages in Ontario that celebrates their heritage. Hear some great French Canadian music - tap your toes and whoop it up! Hope to see you there! Pam
Hi List: This is us!!: - During an ice storm and power outage, you ignore the pleas of your shivering spouse and place your last quilt around that 1886 photograph of dear Uncle George. - Ed McMahon, several TV cameras and an envelope from Publishers Clearing House arrive at your front door on Super Bowl Sunday, and the first thing you say is, "Are you related to the McMahons of Ohio?" - The local genealogy society borrows books from you. - "A Loving Family" and "Financial Security" have moved up to second and third, respectively, on your list of life's goals, but still lag far behind "Owning My Own Microfilm Reader." - A magical genie appears and agrees to grant your any one wish, and you ask that the 1921 census be released on schedule. - More than half of your CD collection is made up of marriage records or pedigrees. - The only film you've seen in the last year was the 1880 census index. - You are the only person to show up at the cemetery research party with a shovel. - You can recite your lineage back eight generations, but can't remember your nephew's name. - You decided to take a two-week break from genealogy, and Canada Post immediately laid off 1,500 employees. - You have more photographs of dead people than living ones. - You introduce your daughter as your descendent. - You plod merrily along "refining" your recently published family history, blissfully unaware that the number of errata pages now far exceeds the number of pages in your original publication. - Your house leans slightly toward the side where your genealogical records are stored. - You've never met any of the people you send e-mails to, even though you're related. - You've not only read the latest GEDCOM standard, but also you understand it. If your "search engine" keyword is the same as a city, town, village, township then please read the valuable tip below: * A. *CONCERN:* If your "search engine" keyword you are using is say: pembrok* then your search will pick up all the pembroke surnames....*BUT* ...it will also pick up all the website pages where pembroke is used as a heading or meta name. * B. *SOLUTION:* Change your keyword to: pembrok1 and the search engine will only pick up the gravemarkers with the pembroke surname. * 3. If you don't see a Community and its' cemeteries online...it means a volunteer has not photographed and sent me the cemetery photographs. Can you or some of your family or friends help out by photographing the missing cemeteries....? * * FEEDBACK ******* * We are always interested in feedback from Visitors. Greetings All The latest issue of 'Gordon Watts Reports' is now online and is available at http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazgw/gazgw-0122.htm Today's article contains vital information that is critical to all current and future genealogists and historians. I view it important enough that it is the only article contained in this issue of 'Gordon Watts Reports'. Please read it carefully. Have a great day! Gordon A. Hi Pam: You had said earlier that you are interested in Hugh Marlow's daughter- Mary Ann Marlow. Mary Ann is my gr gr grandmother. She was born in Upper Canada. She married John McAvoy. They had 10 children. Mary Ann and John are buried at St.Patrick's Apto. Hope this helps. Teresa McLaughlin Jones
Thanks to those who replied. John and I used the same sources! The problem concerning Marlow's burial location was brought about by the use of the word "of" lot 55, concession 1 in the transcription of Rev. Hallen's journal. Presumably Marlow lived there at the time of his death, but Rev. Hallen does not mention that Marlow was buried in that location. St Patrick's Cemetery in Phelpston contains graves of remains moved from another location many years ago so the question had to be resolved for accuracy's sake. Unless he tells me differently, I will presume Hugh Marlow was buried on the land he farmed. ;)) Incidentally, my interest is in his daughter Mary Ann and her descendants.........just in case anyone else is researching the family. Pam
Gwen, not sure if this will be of any help, but a ledger for Temple Lodge No. 238 (Masonic Temple) is in the archives at the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum and was transcribed a couple months ago. Not sure if this is related at all to the Spikehorn Lodge - there is a George McDonald c 1906 listed as a member, but no other information is given for him. I 'googled' many of the terms I encounterd while transcribing this ledger and found a lot of Masonic information and history on line. This ledger covers c 1884 up to late 1906. > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > CAN-ONT-SIMCOE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

I believe that Hugh Marlow at St.Patrick's is Sgt. Hugh Marlow's son. Sgt. Marlow was buried on his property. Pam In 1834, Hugh Marlow, an old soldier, gave up Lot 59 in Medonte and moved over to Lot 55 in Flos on the old Penetangiuishene Road. There he kept a store and later, a tavern. On 6 Aug 1837 he became the first post master in Flos Twp. The first Petty Courts were held at his house. Hugh died in 1840 at the age of 48 years. According to the Hallen Register, he was buried 27 Mar 1840 on Lot 55 Con 1 Flos. His will was probated 18 Jul 1840. Based on information from: Medonte, A Township Remembered, by Mary Garbutt, 2003 The History of Simcoe County, by Andrew F. Hunter, 1909, reprinted 1948 Simcoe County Probate Wills Book Register of Rev. George Hallen - Burials 1837-1877 Trust this is of some use. John F. Hi, I am wondering whether the George McDonald is mine - I know he was a mason - is Spikehorn Lodge a Masonic Lodge? As far as I know my George was the son of Daniel and Charlotte McDonald (Brock) and was born in Penetang - by 1940 I think he lived in Midland. He was an engineer aboard a ferry. Do you know if this is the same guy and if so is there is a relation between him and John A.? Thanks Sue
While researching a family member, who died at Go-Home Bay in May 1940, his obituary mentioned that he as well as six pallbearers were members of the Spikehorn Lodge. The names included John A McDonald, (and that is not the Prime Minister), George McDonald, A Pethie, Boyd Hollister, Robert Dabvison, A.J. Richardson, and Joseph Marchildon. The first two lived in Toronto while the rest were from Penetang. John A McDonald was an Anglican and was buried in the cemetery of St James Anglican in Penetang. He had been born and lived at Highland Point, which is on the north shore of Penetang Bay. I do blieve that John was involved with the lumbering industry but have no idea in what capacity. Thanks for any assistance and/or ideas Gwen
Could someone please provide the burial location of Sgt. Hugh MARLOW? He was buried the 17th of March, 1840 in Flos Township by Rev. George Hallen, rector of St. James-on-the Lines Anglican Church, Penetanguishene. The OCFA shows a Hugh Marlow buried in St. Patrick's R.C. Cemetery in Phelpston, Flos Township. To all those members who wrote about the photograph of the Georgian Bay Lumber Company in Waubaushene - your copies will be in the mail shortly. I was at the Simcoe Archives on Wednesday and had taken copies of the photograph. When sorting thru the copies just prior to leaving, the area had an earth tremour - felt like I had walked from solid ground to one of those moving sidewalks at the airports. Shortly after returning home to Penetang, our hydro disappeared because two tornadoes had gone thru the area - lots of damage in certain parts of Midland with hydro out in many parts of this area for upwards of 24 hours - some injuries and large amounts of "stuff" to be picked up and disposed of by the authorities - and then we spent the weekend at a ball tourney in Kitchener Waterloo where it rained most of today...... I will get the photograph out to everyone within the next day or two and many thanks for your patience. Gwen
Hello Everyone, I am looking for any information about a Thomas Sheppard born abt. 1780, died August 2, 1842 His wife Latica Sheppard born abt. 1790, died March 26,1866 Tecumseth Twp, Simcoe Co. Would there be a record of their deaths in a newspaper? How would I go about searching this information? They are buried at St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery, Tecumseth Twp. Simcoe Co. I have the photos. They could be my 3x grandparents but I can not find any information to prove this. There are two other Sheppard's in this Cemetery, Joseph Sheppard- my grandfather- and Thomas Sheppard - my great grandfather. Is anyone searching this Sheppard family? Thank you. Martina
Pam . I am almost four months late, with a reply, but yours is at the bottom of a list of 600 unread e-mails .... but THAT IS ANOTHER STORY !!! You are absolutely RIGHT about the Mothers, and Grannies, in our lives !!!!! MY FATHER DIED, WHEN I WAS FOUR .. AND I WAS RAISED BY MY MOTHER, AND ( HER MOTHER ) , both early widows , so have a large appreciation for the " Ladies" in my life. Hope I can do justice, to them, as you suggest !!!! I have a great store of facinating stories. Hi listers, I have posted the following notice on a number of local (E. Ontario) lists, with an apology for a rather off-topic post, but in reading my digest copy of yesterdays Simcoe list, this morning, I realized that I know there are a number of Simcoe readers in this area too. So, if I may .... We received an invitation to bring our CD Digital Book products to the Upper Canada Book Fair to be held at the Ecoty Education Centre, near Perth, Ontario, on the 26th and 27th of June. We are always pleased to support such activities if they are within our travel range so you will find us there over the weekend. As the name implies the theme of the fair is Upper Canada (the old name for Ontario) and there is a full schedule of talks and panel discussions set for both days, including lectures by most of the 20 or so authors who will be attending with copies of their books for sale. Even though this is not a "strictly genealogy" event the history of our environment is so strongly coupled to our genealogy that I'm sure you will find this a rewarding experience. I'm also informed that the Ecotay Education Centre is a wonderful place to visit. For full information, including a schedule of the talks, etc. go to the Internet link: http://ecotay.com/upper-canada-book-fair-programme/ (Make sure you get the whole link if you copy it.) There is a full description of the event on the site's "home" page and information on how you can contact them if you wish to ask questions. Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc.
