This newsletter will be published whenever we have enough information to make it worth your while reading, but that usually means there will be about one a month. Remember this Newsletter is published for you so if you think we’re missing something important drop me a line to Malcolm@ArchiveCDBooks.ca. Newsletters work best when they get a good circulation. We’re doing our best to let people know about it but you could help us along by mentioning it to your genealogy buddies and generally spreading the word. All newsletter administration messages should be e-mailed to Books@ArchiveCDBooks.ca All previous newsletters may be accessed by logging on to http://www.ArchiveCDBooks.ca/NewsletterArchive.html 2 WHAT’S IN THE NEWSLETTER: Arriving, as it does, during this rather frenetic time of year in many people's lives you may have to put this newsletter in your "to do" file until you have time to read it fully. Our international partners have distributed no less than 74 newly released titles in the last month. Add that to the 7 new Canadian releases and this turns out to be a jumbo edition of our newsletter. Because of the unusually large number of titles I have drastically cut down on the book's descriptions here, so do remember to visit our on-line catalogue to read the complete description for any book that interests you. We also have free samplers of our new Canadian products. To find a book on our web site http://www.archivecdbooks.ca take a note of the catalogue number - or use the “copy” function - go to the web site, click on the “Search Page” link and enter, or “paste,” the number into the “Product Number” box. Hit “Search” and then “More” and you will be in a position to reread the description. ----------------------------- 3 NEW CANADIAN RELEASES: * Shanty, Forest and River Life., CA0244 The title of this book actually continues, ".. in the Backwoods of Canada" and it was published in 1884, the year after the death of its author. This book is packed with reminiscences and anecdotes about backwoods life in the upper reaches of the Ottawa valley. The main theme of the book is an examination of the life of the loggers engaged in harvesting timber in these un-populated backwoods but there are also plenty of excursions into other tales of the woods as well as several chapters about the spring "drive" to get the winters logs down to Quebec. In its time it would be an important text book for anyone venturing into the backwoods. Today it provides a wonderful insight into the life of a ìlumbermanî working in the Ottawa river valley in a well defined period. We have made the book fully text searchable and enhanced the search with our FastFind technology although I would expect most readers to simply read the book for the pleasure of it. I say this because all the people who worked on making the reproduction of this book finished up reading it. Its stories are well told and it takes you back to a life we can only imagine now. * The Gilbert Family History, This is a family history "compiled and edited" by Geoffrey Gilbert, and privately published by him in the 1950's. Mr. Gilbert adopted a somewhat unusual format for organizing his history by combining elements of both the "Ancestors" and "Descendants" methodologies and then focusing the histories on his Great Great Grandparents, identifying both their ancestors and their descendants. By selecting this particular generation as his focus he allows himself to concentrate his history on the family's story within North America specifically ignoring the histories of those in Britain where most of the families originated from. This reduces the number of G-G-Grandparents for consideration, from the potential 16, to 12 individuals. This number is further reduced, by the circumstance of some of the ancestral unions, to 9 individual / family histories. The set of volumes we have acquired actually provides the histories of only 8 G-G-Grandparents and our research has failed to show any evidence that the ninth volume was actually ever written. The identities of the 8 documented G-G-Grandparents are: Vol 1: Nancy Treadway (1776-1865), mother of Nancy Maria Moffatt Vol 2: Melvin Moffatt (1774-1857), father of Nancy Maria Moffatt Vol 3: Daniel Britton (1773-1827), father of Daniel Freeman Britton Vol 4: Sally Wood (1780-1862), mother of Daniel Freeman Britton Vol 5: William Forbes (1778-1833), father of Eliza Forbes. Vol 6: Ezra Holton (1785-1858), father of Luther Hamilton Holton. Vol 7: Solomon Gilbert (1755-1829), father of Moses Haskell Gilbert Vol 8: Thankful Haskell (1745-1841), mother of Moses Haskell Gilbert. Available as follows: * The Gilbert Family History Collection - complete in 8 volumes, CA0238-S * Ancestry of Nancy Treadway, Vol.1 & Melvin Moffatt, Vol.2, CA0238-A * Ancestry of Daniel Britton, Vol.3 & Sally Wood, Vol.4, CA0238-B * Ancestry of William Forbes, Vol.5, CA0238-C * Ancestry of Ezra Holton, Vol.6, CA0238-D * Ancestry of Solomon Gilbert, Vol.7 & Thankful Haskell, Vol.8, CA0238-E ---------------------------------- 4 COMING SOON: We are still spoiled for choice of wonderful old books to make into CDs for you so once again I'm going to duck giving you the titles of next months releases. I will tell you that your response to our Gt. War reproductions has made up our minds to re-publish more in that line. There is also a set of four books by a single author about the Atlantic Provinces that I have been meaning to bring to you all year. So, I'm afraid you will just have to be patient until January. ---------------------------------- 5 NEW RELEASES FROM OUR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS 5.1 FROM AUSTRALIA * Official Records of the Australian Military Contingents to the War in South Africa 1899-1902, AU0008 * Cook's Interstate Business Directory 1937, AU0112-1937 * The Australasian Medical Directory and Handbook Year: CD # 1883 AU0121-1883 1886 AU0121-1886 1892 AU0121-1892 1896 AU0121-1896 1900 AU0121-1900 * Loxton's Medical Directory 1911, AU0121-1911 * Medical Directory 1915, AU0121-1915 * The Australian Lutheran 1913-20 AU0131-1 1921-30 AU0131-2 * The Federal Pioneer Magazine (October 1926-August 1927), AU1801 * Pearson's Road Guide to New South Wales, AU2023 * Government Gazettes: Contain a vast amount of historical and genealogical information. The Gazetteer happily combines more than 2,200 pages of statistical, topographical and anecdotal material on many of Ireland's smaller villages and hamlets as well as the country's larger towns and cities. * Handran's Townlands in Poor Law Unions, IE0022 For any Irish historical or genealogical researcher, the importance of Townlands in Poor Law Unions is immeasurable, and is one of only a small handful of must-have reference sources. * A Frenchman's Walk through Ireland 1796-1797, IE0023 Originally published in French in Brunswick as Promenade d'un FranÁais dans l'Irlande, A Frenchman's Walk Through Ireland is an important source for researchers, interested in Irish society at the close of the eighteenth century. * Statistical Survey of the King's County, 1801, IET0052 The Irish Statistical Survey was carried out under the direction of the Royal Dublin Society. Each county was surveyed with the aim of determining the 'actual state, capabilities and defects of agriculture, manufactures and rural economy'. * Jail Journal, 2nd ed., 1914, IET0055 Described as 'a classic of Irish revolutionary writing', John Mitchel's Jail Journal was first published in the New York Citizen, the journal established by Mitchel on his arrival in America, between 14th January and 19th August 1854. A subsequent edition of the Jail Journal was published in which Mitchel detailed his experiences in the United States between 1853 and 1866, the current CD-Rom publication contains both. * The Annals of Derry, 1847, IET0056 Published in 1847, Robert Simpson's Annals of Derry is one of the most important books available for genealogists and historians, researching the social history of early modern Derry city. * The Post-Chaise Companion, 1786 (W. Wilson), IET0057 This represents one of the most complete guides of its type, all of which were to be relegated to history less than fifty years later with the advent of the railway. Post-dating Taylor & Skinner's Maps of the Roads of Ireland and pre-dating many less-adequate Irish travel companions and directories, the Post-Chaise Companion has much to recommend it. * The Judges in Ireland 1221-1921, 1926 (F. Elrington Ball), IET0058 This book (2 volumes) spans 700 years of Irish judicial history, from the reigns of Henry III to the reign of George V, and the inception of the Irish Free State. * Ward & Lock's Pictorial Guide to Connemara c.1890, IET0059 This Guide to Connemara and the West of Ireland was published in London circa 1890 and can be viewed as a continuation of a myriad of books published in Ireland for the more intrepid foreign or Irish traveller throughout the nineteenth-century. * Dalton's Irish Army Lists, 1661-1685, IET0060 Much of the information contained in the Irish Army Lists, 1661-1685 was taken from the Calendars and Reports of the Marquis of Ormond MSS, but it also draws a plethora of information from the Irish State Papers, as well as the King's Letter and Entry Books. ----------------------------------- 6 NEWS & GOSSIP: If any of you have genealogy related questions of a general nature - or something specifically related to Archive CD Books - we'd be glad to publish your question in this newsletter to tap into the enormous fund of knowledge which I know is out there. * DIGITAL GENEALOGY There is a new Genealogy Magazine available. The difference with this one is that it is delivered by e-mail and is "all-digital." You can see what the magazine is all about - and review their free first issue at: http://www.digitalgenealogist.com/ I don't normally "shill" for other commercial genealogy operations but the International Archive CD Books partnership is running an advertisement in the next three issues and you might benefit from what you could see there. ;-) * SEASONS GREETING! Last but far from least. It is the season to reflect on, and to reinforce, our connections so let me express to you all how much we here at Archive CD Books Canada appreciate your support and at the same time wish you an enjoyable and safe holiday season. 7 FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY AND OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS: ------------------------------------- January 13, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m., British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa (BIFHSGO) MEETING, Subject "Publishing your Family History: A case Study" by John F.
