    3. Do you know how the 20% were selected for the long form? An individual who had two grandparents born in Peel County got the long form. Two brothers who moved away from Peel County were listed with different information on the 1911 census. Depending on the year people left Peel County and occupation, I've sometimes been able to guess where to look for them in a later census. Before 1881 usually north or west of Peel County in Ontario or USA, after 1881 try Manitoba, after 1900 try Saskatchewan, after 1906 try Alberta. Few went to BC before 1911 but some Ontario-born people retired there after decades working in one or more of the in-between provinces. I've been unable to find some households in one of the census years. One family that came west by covered wagon could have been on the way east to Manitoba after two seasons 1879-1881 without a school for the children. -- Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Muriel > Only 20% received the 53-page long form and the 80% the short form. > The purpose of the census is to gain statistics re number of people of > various races in Canada at this date; plus the long form asked many > more personal questions relating to income, marital status and others.

    1. Count Yourself In on May 16, 2006 With A YES Reply
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Muriel M. Davidson 25 Crestview Avenue Brampton, ON Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee 905-451-3542 ================================= FAMILY HISTORY AND MAY 16, 2006 CENSUS By now most Canadians will have received the short or long form of the 2006 census records -- we were legally able to start completing these on May 2, 2006, with final date May 16, 2006. Only 20% received the 53-page long form and the 80% the short form. The purpose of the census is to gain statistics re number of people of various races in Canada at this date; plus the long form asked many more personal questions relating to income, marital status and others. This 2006 census is an interim one -- with main census records on years ending with "1", for example the 1901 census and the next one the 1911. A new and important question has been added this year -- No. 8 on the short form and No. 53 on the long form. It is a request that all Canadians mark the YES answer ensuring descendants will be able to access family data as of this date. The Canada Census Committee worked very hard from March 15, 1999 to June 28, 2005 before we actually obtained release of the overdue 1911 census records. However, Statistics Canada demanded a price for release of 1911 to 2001 records -- they called it the "Informed Consent" clause. StatsCan hopes to ask the same question also in 2011 and 2016 -- but we will have to see if this can be changed. The Informed Consent clause, for the first time in over 350 years, asks us to give permission for release of our personal family history by stating YES. If one answers NO or leaves the space BLANK, that is also considered as NO. The census records are used for other statistical purposes and data may be released shortly. This includes grants of monies based on the number replying to the census records.- The family data will be released by Library and Archives Canada in 2098, 92 years after enumeration. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are fully transcribed and may be viewed at http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/ Transcribing these was not always easy -- but now we are working on New Brunswick, plus all provinces of Canada. Looking forward to hearing that everyone marked YES!!! Should there be queries -- do not hesitate to contact me. Muriel M. 3. Would anyone on these Lists know of a descendant of "E. Jennings", author of the book The Seven Beaton Sisters, published in Toronto in 1941. In lieu of descendants of E.Jennings,is there a descendant of one of the seven Beaton Sisters who could give me permission to put on a web site, the names of the sisters, the names of their husbands and descendants from the book. There has since been some additional information, mostly in the form of dates and places, that can be added. Are there any of the descendants who would object to having this information put on a web site? It would be through Rootsweb, and very similar to my own web site below, GEDCOM formation. 1. 2006 Census -- for ALL Canadians
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all Canadians -- at home or abroad:- The following is an article which may be re-written in your own words and forwarded to newspapers immediately and to as many friends as you wish -- we hope to have 100% participation in this May 16, 2006 census. Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee ========================= On the upcoming Census form there is a question re the release of your personal information to the public in 92 years time. I am writing to ask when you return your Census forms on May 16 if you would please mark YES to item 53 so personal information may be released to all families doing genealogical research in 2098. You would be helping present and future families to know who you are and the type of work you did in 2006, where and when you immigrated to Canada etc. If you mark NO you restrict your family and other relatives knowing where they fit in the family tree. You may not care where they fit but others do. Please consider marking an X in the YES box. The following question on this year's census return is for all persons who usually live in Canada including those less than 15 years old. 53. The Statistics Act guarantees the confidentiality of your census information. Only if you mark "YES" to this question will your personal information be made public in 2098, 92 years after the 2006 Census. If you mark "NO"or leave the answer blank, your personal information will never be made publicly available. Does this person agree to make his/her 2006 Census information available for public release in 2098 (92 years after the census)? Yes No Inclusion of this 'informed consent' provision in Censuses to be conducted from 2006 was the price forced upon genealogists and historians seeking to regain public access to Historic Census records to which existing legislation already stated we were entitled. We had been advised that unless this provision was accepted the government would not present the Bill (S-18) to end a seven-year campaign to regain public access to Historic Census records in accordance with provisions of the Access to Information and Privacy Acts. Help to ensure your place in the history of Canada. On Census Day 16 May 2006, answer YES to allow your information to be made available to your descendants in 2098. Ask everyone you know to do so as well. You may say "who cares". Maybe you don't but one of your ancestors/family members might one day in the future. Also the census records assist your city or town to obtain grants for items such as hospitals, roads -- money lost is about $30,000 for each person who does not fill out and return the 2006 census form -- help your city and thus help to decrease your taxation bills.

My card announcing the May 16, 2006 census arrived today, telling me I would recieve a yellow envelope in the mail, with forms inside. The card also gave online and telephone instructions. Please remember to answer a big YES to Question 53 re our family data which will not be released until 2098. This question is one of the prices we paid for release of 1911 to 2001 census last June, 2005 - the same question will be asked again in 2011 and 2016 [unless policitians vote otherwise] Muriel M. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon A. Watts" <gordon_watts@telus.net> To: "Canada Census Campaign" <CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 19, 2006 2:06 PM Subject: Census 2006 -- Lockheed-Martin and confidentiality Greetings All Over the past few weeks I have been made aware of a group who have been actively campaigning to have people hinder, or cripple the upcoming Canadian Census. I have been reluctant to make mention of them at all, hoping they would just 'go away', and I will not mention who they are because I do not wish to give any indication I believe them to be credible. Let it suffice to say that it would appear they are well funded, and well organized. In my opinion however, they are misguided and misinformed regarding the realities of how the Census is being conducted. They do not advocate outright refusal to respond to the Census, but offer a number of suggestions regarding ways to hinder the process, and to skew the resultant data. To follow these suggestions would, in my opinion, be dangerous and detrimental to the entire process and the reasons for it. These people put forth the fact that Statistics Canada has contracted out to the Canadian subsidiary of Lockheed-Martin for software, and fear that having done so makes our Census data subject to export to the United States under legislation enacted there after 9-11, as reasons to not fully cooperate in our upcoming Census. This is not a new issue. In fact, to my knowledge it has been around since early 2004, when Statistics Canada conducted a test Census in preparation for Census 2006. It is an issue that has been dealt with in Parliament at least twice that I am aware of. It is an issue that should have been put to rest long ago. Statistics Canada has taken a number of steps to ensure that confidentiality of Census is maintained, and that NO information provided to Census can be exported to the United States or any other country. Those steps include the following: ** Only Statistics Canada staff handle completed questionnaires and process confidential data. All questionnaires and data are processed in Canada. ** The systems and networks used to collect and process confidential data are not connected to any external networks, and are physically isolated from the outside. ** No contract staff is ever in possession of confidential data, and it is physically impossible for any outside contractor to obtain possession of census data or to transmit them outside the Agency. ** Everyone working on the census is sworn in under the Statistics Act, and subject to the provisions and penalties of the Statistics Act (including imprisonment of up to six months) if they breach confidentiality. I urge everyone to cooperate fully, and to honestly complete the Census 2006 questionnaires. It is to your advantage to do so. Ensure your place in the history of Canada. On Census Day 16 May 2006, answer YES to allow your information to be made available to your descendants in 2098. As everyone you know to do so as well. Gordon A.
