    1. Re: [Can-Ont-Peel] Orangeville Banner from 1940 - 1972
    2. Anne Stevens
    3. Hello Jane and Lucy: 'Thank you for the suggestions. I'll try the National Archives and see if they have anything on line. However, even if Dufferin County had copies of the Orangeville Banncer,it is too far out of the way for me to visit. I think I'll persuade my sister to go with me to Orangeville and spend the afternoon searching the old newspapers. A first cousin of my father's, Raspin Scott by name, apparently wrote a column for the Orangeville Banner, about Melville in Caledon West Twp. I don't know precisely when he wrote the columns but I would like to find them. He apparently published a small booklet on The History of Melville, sometime before 1972 when he died, and I haven't been able to find a copy anywhere. I have a feeling he may have collected some or all of his weekly column and published it as a book. The Orangeville Banner has been very helpful but they don't have the staff to spend on searching the paper. However, they said I could make an appointment and do the searching myself. I was just hoping there would be copies closer to home, but I guess we can't have everything. Since I don't drive anymore, I hope my Thanks again for your help. As usual, people on Mailing Lists are so helpful and someone always comes up with a solution or suggestion. I have found the mailing Lists invaluable. 1. Our 1911 Census Records -- 100% Transcribed -- Would Make A Great Gift
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- One person we all know, either in person or by name, will be celebrating a special event in her life on September 17 and as usual NO GIFTS-- however, I am certain ONE very special gift would be to have 100% ratings all across Canada. If so, a special certificate to that effect will be given -- I am certain this would be a thrilling climax to the 1911-2001 release on June 28, 2005. Present standings are, in numerical standing:- NOVA SCOTIA ........................ 100.00% NORTHWEST TERRITORIES.. 100.02% PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND.....100.00% YUKON......................................100.00% ONTARIO.................................. 85.08% NEW BRUNSWICK ................. 68.74% MANITOBA............................... 68.50% QUEBEC ................................... 58.31% SASKATCHEWAN.................... 43.80% BRITISH COLUMBIA................ 42.85% ALBERTA .................................. 29.71% [Note: Percentages may have changed this evening] Also Nunavut is in NorthWest Territories, as is Labrador I am certain if everyone reading this did ONE complete page of 50 (or 51) lines, we could achieve this goal. Enumerators often added an extra line -- but please do NOT skip lines if unreadable, use the hot key -- ?? http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/ Sign in with email as userid plus your own password Click on TRANSCRIBE on a line where someone has not claimed the page, just follow what is written on the image and hit SUBMIT after each line is finished. If data ends at Line 50 (far left line),when you hit submit it will show 51 -- delete Surname and House Number -- Claim Page if not already claimed, then return as directed. Let's give it a try -- proofreaders are already at work in some areas, and the sooner we get the 1911 census finished, we might get the 1891 or another older census. Muriel M. 1. Would ONE of Your Ancestors Have Been A British Home Child?
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. This message is being sent on behalf of many children of the British Home Children Society -- some of whom might be your ancestors. I am certain many are being transcribed as lodgers or domestics on the 1911 census, some as young as two years. Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Brampton, ON NOTE - Any queries to Perry Snow, address below, please! ========================================== British Home Children Society Could one of your ancestors have been a British Home Child? 100,000 children aged 5-15 were sent to Canada to work as indentured farm labourers and domestic servants as part of the British Child Emigration Scheme to Canada (1870-1957). Their familial ties were broken once 'in care' and sent to Canada. Many British Home Children spent their lives trying to find their parents and siblings. Many of their descendants have inherited their ancestors' lifelong search for their identities. Their are an estimated 5 million descendants of the British Home Children in Canada, and another estimated 1 million in the USA - an unknown number of children ran away from their farm placements to the USA, married, and had children. Over 50 childcare organizations (ie Barnardo, Rye, Waifs & Strays) professed a motive of providing these orphaned, impoverished, unwanted children with better lives than what they might have had in England. But, many of these children suffered from child neglect and abuse, and were often treated only as unpaid indentured farm labourers and domestic servants. The primary goal of the British Home Children Society is to create a comprehensive database of individual British Home Children records called the British Home Children Registry. This Registry will collect information about each individual British Home Child to create an ongoing legacy that will preserve their identities in perpetuity. The Registry currently has +50,000 individual records, and an abbreviated online version can be searched on The British Home Children Website The British Home Children Society was formed to assist the millions of Canadian, American, British, and Australian descendants of the British Home Children with re-establishing their familial ties. The sending agencies have been traditionally reluctant to release records to descendants. The British Home Children Society is committed to building an international community of Canadian, American, British, and Australian descendants to assist each other with their searches. 1. John SCHILLER, late 18th century
    2. Hello: I'm looking for information -- any information at all -- regarding a man who appears in the Muster Rolls of German Troops in Quebec microfilm records as: SCHILLER, John, Corp co., Peel County, Ont I'm trying to trace the ancestry of my 19th century SHEELER family of Niagara District and later Kent County. My 3xgt-grandfather Alexander SHEELER is the brick wall. He presumably married the widowed Margaret HAGERMAN DALTON (b c1806) in the Niagara District between 1830, when her son Edmond by her first husband James DALTON was born, and 1832 or 1833 when their own first son Phillip was born. Their younger son John SHEELER, b 1835, was my gt-gt-grandfather. Margaret was a widow at least by the 1851 census and living in Kent County with her sons. I haven't seen an 1841 census record for this family, but Alexander presumably died when his sons and step-son were too young to remember much about him. The boys spelled their name SCHIELER, SHIELER, and SHILLER (as well as the usual creative spellings by other people) before settling on SHEELER by the later19th century. Alexander appears only as a name in his sons' marriage records of 1860 and 1861 -- I have been unable to locate a birth, marriage, or death record for Alexander which might give his father's name and nationality. In the 19th century censuses, brothers John and Philip can't seem to make up their minds as to their ethnic ancestry, French or German, which made me suspect that their grandfather or great-grandfather might have been a Hessian soldier who settled in Quebec after the American Revolution and married a French girl, as many of them did. I'm unable to read microfilm myself owing to a vision problem, but a friend who was also researching Quebec Hessians searched for me and came up with four possible "suspects" from the Muster Rolls. The other three have much more detailed entries, giving birth dates and places in Germany, marriage dates and wives' names, and occupations. For this John SCHILLER, all the information given was as above. It wasn't clear if he had been born in Peel County to German parents, had been born in Germany like the others and was living in Peel when he joined the regiment, or settled there after the war instead of accepting land in Quebec like the others. Can anyone provide any scrap of information at all? Something that eliminates him from my search will do just as well as something that keeps him in consideration as an ancestor. Thank you, Margaret Gibbs Richmond, BC

    3. The indexes to Ontario vital records as provided by Ancestry.ca have errors and omissions, as do the indexes on microfilm. If you are unable to find a birth marriage or death in the Ancestry.ca electronic indexes, scroll down the Ancestry.ca "search" page". You will find all of the Ontario counties listed as hot links. Click on the county that you are interested in. A list of years will appear on your screen. Choose the year/s of interest and then browse through all of the registrations for that year. I've found 3 registrations of my ancestors that did not appear on the electronic indexes. Hope this helps :) PS: For more searchable Ontario databases see the following link. 1. Kate KERR born May 1848
    2. I have returned because I have not been able to learn anything about my Kate KERR except for the very valuable info provided by Joanne Waugh I am looking for Elizabeth and Archibald KERR who had daughter Kate KERR born 1848. She is said to have a brother Archie but I am not sure. The OGS and Church's I have wrote have found nothing which leads me to believe that Elizabeth and Archibald may be a middle name. Or, one of them died and a step parent name may be the one that shows in the census. The death certificate of Kate Bain Nee KERR says that she was born in London Middlesex Ontario. The names of her children (on maternal side) are Edward, William, Florence, Viola, Archie. Hopfully, some one will keep an eye out for this name. <smile> Thank you, Moria

    1. Re: [Can-Ont-Peel] Marriage record of John Kellington to Elizabeth Farnell 17Sep1859
    2. E.Rodier
    3. No online image for that marriage using the ancestry.ca subscription today. You could try borrowing the microfilm 1030063 from Salt Lake City or wait in case more marriage registration images are added to the collection. ----- Original Message ----- From: "RSMoore" > Good morning!
