REYNOLDS, Burton C.: Saturday February 10, 2007, Halifax Herald: REYNOLDS, Burton C. - Died peacefully at Peel Memorial Hospital, Brampton, Ont., Saturday, February 3, 2007. Born in Mulgrave, N.S., in October, 1916, to Rev. Alfred and Phoebe (Cooke) Reynolds. Came of age during the Depression, "rode the rods" across Canada, joined the Merchant Marine, then the Canadian Navy at the outbreak of war in 1939. Close to the war's end, when stationed in Sydney, N.S., he met a navy nursing sister from Oshawa, Ont., named Helen Hare. He and Helen were married for 60 years, until her death this past July 31. After his marriage to Helen, Bert left the sea to work in sales for many years, chiefly at Fiberglass Canada Ltd. in Toronto and Halifax. In 1966, he entered the real estate business first in Ontario and later in Florida. In retirement, Bert and Helen lived in Lindsay and finally Brampton, Ont. Bert is survived by his three daughters, Joyce Campbell (Colin) of Toronto; Joan Clare of Peterborough; and Maggie Reynolds (John Simmonds) of Courtenay, B.C. "Grandpa Bert" also leaves his six grandchildren: Colin, Susannah (Loic Oliver), Alex (Jackie Rohel), and Malcolm Campbell; Kerry (Stuart Lawler) and Christy Clare. He was predeceased by his older brother, Alfred J. Reynolds of Sydney, N.S., but is lovingly remembered by his younger brother, Rev. Alan Reynolds (Brenda) of Richmond, B.C. Bert was a "character", a source of stories for years to come, but he was also a restless soul, always on the move, never at rest. He has finally found his home and is at peace. The family will gather in the spring for the burial of Bert's cremated remains. Donations in his memory may be made to Salvation Army, with his everlasting thanks for all they did to help him (and others) get by during the Depression. Arrangements in care of Ward Funeral Home, Brampton, Ont.
Thanks to Jane for giving my foggy brain a clear suggestion. I checked the Peel OGS site and came across the index to the Upper Canada Land Book and low and behold William Chevin and John Smith are neigbours. John's son Richard marries Mary Ann Cheavins and it looks like William is her father. William is residing with a younger William (his son?) in the 1851 census. Now to order the land record CD and see what other info I can find. Jim
Hi all, Thanks to Janet Bessey, Susan Campbell, Susan Leitch and to Del who all clued me in to the fact that the 1851 Census is now on-line. I was able to confirm that the Peter McArhur family I was interested in had left Caledon by that time. There is a Peter McArthur in Sydenham township in 1851, and I wonder if anyone has any idea how to find out from property records when they left Lot 10, Con. 5 WHS Caledon. I already know when they arrived in Sydenham, so if the dates would happen to match I would be looking at the same family. Cheers, Don

Has anyone come across the Cheavins/Chevins name? I have John Smith married to Marry Ann Cheavins in 1823. No parents listed of course but I did finally find a record which placed her from Albion Twp where they raised their family. The 1851 Albion census has a Chevins family, which may be her brother as head of household and a William and Mary Chevins both age 73 living with him. Can anyone find Joseph Smith or Stephen Tenney in the 1851 Ontario census--Oxford or Oakland Co.? February 10, 2007 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM (Saturday) Introduction to SCOTTISH Family History Research Workshop Leader: Jane MacNamara This day-long workshop is suitable for beginning genealogists, or those just getting started on Scottish research. The session begins with some basic concepts of Scottish genealogy and introduce the major 19th and 20th century family history sources--census and civil registration. Participants will be shown how to access these records locally and how to search efficiently (and economically.) Building on these "recent" records, the session will move on to Old Parochial Registers and other church records, dating from the 1500s to 1855. Types of records, terminology, tips on how best to read a parish register, and the pros and cons of accessing these records on microfilm or on the Internet will be discussed. The day winds up with a look at the wonderful resources for family historians in Scottish records of inheritance, explaining the concept of "heritable" versus "moveable" property. Jane MacNamara is an acknowledged expert and popular speaker on the topic of researching family history in Scotland. Though Jane lables her workshop as "an introduction" family history researchers, from beginners to experienced, will discover new strategies and resources for discovering their Scottish roots. The inexpensive workshop fee includes workshop registration plus coffee, tea, bottled water and snacks.
