    3. Hi Gay, Yes, I was trying to be careful NOT to suggest relying on the roads (and hence the line and concession rights of way) to do the "through time" translation. Just driving around for a few years you can see how roads wander from their original course, particularly the major ones you would naturally try and use as reference points. I was thinking more of features like rivers and gullies which tend to persevere even through our more radical development changes. On the other hand I wonder how accurate the Historical Atlas Maps were in the first place. While the township layout was based on a grid pattern many of the the actual plans had "allowances" for areas where large parts of a grant would be unsuitable for agriculture. The result was a somewhat irregular grid. When it came to drafting up the Atlases I wonder if the publishers took account of all the deviations. I was just sampling in one I have to confirm that the grid patters are shown as being highly regular. I even saw one lot which was about 75% lake, and the remaining 25% land was split between opposite shores! And then to cap it off it had a name on it indicating someone had agreed to "develop" it for farming. For fish perhaps? Anyway, yes, it would be nice if SKS had already done the leg work, but if you are forced back on your own resources there should be some way of making an approximate connection. I can only wish you the best of luck, and urge you to enjoy the sense of accomplishment you will get when you figure it out! :-) Incidentally, as an after thought, I wonder how the town planners who published that by-law identify the lots and concessions? Have you thought of approaching them with your question? Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc. President: Malcolm Moody PO Box 11 Manotick Ontario, K4M 1A2 Canada. I have visions of driving around all day trying to find the Burial Grounds and leaving without success! I thought someone on the list would know where it was. Thank you for your reply. Gay

    1. [CAN-ONT-PEEL] Archive CD Books Canada NEWSLETTER V4#2 - 22 June 2007
    2. Malcolm Moody
    3. - Posted with the permission of the List Administrator. - Contents: 1 WELCOME 2 WHAT’S IN THE NEWSLETTER 3 NEW CANADIAN RELEASE (1) 4 COMING SOON 5 NEW PARTNER RELEASES (190) - Yes that's right! See below: 6 NEWS & GOSSIP 7 FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY AND OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS: 8 PREVIOUSLY RELEASED BOOKS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 WELCOME: Welcome to another rather late issue of our newsletter. We have just completed attending a very interesting series of Family History Society conventions and are struggling to deal with the resulting office backlog. Please don't misunderstand me though. We love to get out and meet all of you, to renew old friendships and to make new friends. That is a large part of why we go to these events, but physically the "round" is quite trying! And the backlogs . . . !!! Anyway, we are now back into more regular operations and hopefully things will begin to return to normal. This newsletter will be published whenever we have enough information to make it worth your while reading, but that usually means there will be about one a month. Remember this Newsletter is published for you so if you think we’re missing something important drop me a line to Malcolm@ArchiveCDBooks.ca. Newsletters work best when they get a good circulation. We’re doing our best to let people know about it but you could help us along by mentioning it to your genealogy buddies and generally spreading the word. please feel free to pass this copy along but only in its complete form. All newsletter administration messages should be e-mailed to Books@ArchiveCDBooks.ca In the Subject line you may write: Subscribe Unsubscribe Halt (if you want to put a temporary stop to receiving newsletters) Resume (to lift the Halt and resume receiving newsletters.) All previous newsletters may be accessed by logging on to http://www.ArchiveCDBooks.ca/NewsletterArchive.html 2 WHAT’S IN THE NEWSLETTER: Just the one new Canadian release this month, but a gigantic 190 new releases from our partners. And the only reason it's only 190 is that we simply haven't had time to upload the remaining 108 onto our web site yet! Plus the usual news, gossip and announcements. -------------------------- To find a book on CD on our web site http://www.archivecdbooks.ca take a note of the catalogue number - or use the “copy” function - go to the web site, click on the “Search Page” link and enter, or “paste,” the number into the “Product Number” box. Hit “Search” and then “More” and you will be in a position to reread the description or to place your order. Alternatively you can browse through the catalogue using the drop down headings lists. We have tried to multi-list books where they correspond to more than one category but consider the possibility that the subject you are looking for may be under a related heading. There is frequently more information about the books available on the web site than that which is included in the following descriptions. All prices in $Cdn. ----------------------------- 3 NEW CANADIAN RELEASE: * The 24th Battalion, C.E.F., Victoria Rifles of Canada, 1914 - 1919 CA0247: A well written and detailed history of this Montreal based military unit from its beginnings as a volunteer unit, during the 1812 invasions, through its recognition as a militia through the Fenian raids and a number of civil disorders to its conversion to a full time component of the C.E.F., including its contribution of a core of trained officers and men in the formation of the 14th Battalion, Royal Montreal Regiment. Throughout, the account is well illustrated with photographs, sketches and situation maps. An additional map of the Battle of Arras in June 1916 and June 1917 was slipped into the book by one of the previous owners so we have included it on the CD. The book's appendices contain an honour Roll as well as lists of earned honours, commissions and the Battalions battle statistics. [Abbreviated description only, see web site, More Information - for further description.] ---------------------------------- 4 COMING SOON: We have been loaned a very unusual document by one of our friends and while we have it ready for release we need to get his agreement on our release method so this will not be ready for a few more days. We have several more books vying for "top of the pile" status and will be making decisions on our next projects in the next few days, ---------------------------------- 5 NEW PARTNERS RELEASES: Because of the unprecedented number of new partner releases which I would normally list in this newsletter I am changing our presentation format to give you only the quantity of them. To review the titles and descriptions of the new releases go to our web site at <www.ArchiveCDBooks.ca> and click on the "Catalogue and Orders" logo. From the list in the next window select "New Releases" and from the drop down list select either "May" or "June." If you want the list of the titles e-mail me off list and I'll be glad to send it to you 5.1 New USA Releases (33): 5.2 New Irish Releases ( 6): 5.3 New Releases about the United Kingdom ( 9): 5.4 New Releases about Australia and New Zealand (142 all together): NOTE: A few of these "new" releases have previously been released under different catalogue numbers. Check titles carefully. There are still about 100 more titles to be uploaded to the web site. They will be listed in the next news letter. ----------------------------------- 6 NEWS & GOSSIP: If any of you have genealogy related questions of a general nature - or something specifically related to Archive CD Books - we'd be glad to publish your question in this newsletter to tap into the enormous fund of knowledge which I know is out there. * SUMMER TRADE SHOWS. 3. Hi Gay, By a bit of judicious Googling I have found a by-law announcement for 2007 which refers to "Lot 18, Concession 3 East of Hurontario Street, in the Town of Caledon (formerly Township of Chinguacousy), Regional Municipality of Peel." Obviously not the specific Lot you are looking for, but if the Lot / Concession identities have remained the same through the intervening changes in local authority etc., etc., then it will give you a locale for Lot 10. From the description I would take it that Hurontario Street formed the baseline for the town layout so it would define the "base" of the rectangular concession / lot layout. The lot sizes were well defined (although I don't remember them off the top of my head) so you should be able to determine how far 8 Lots should be. It's always a bit of a challenge to relate old land grant locations to modern day development unless you can find an original grant map of the area and do the temporal translation through the geographic features. One source for original land grant locations are the "Illustrated Historical Atlases" which were originally published by several companies in the late 1800's through the early 1900's and have been reproduced "to death"' subsequently. Most are also available on-line so try a Google. Don't know if this is going to be any help but it opens a couple of avenues if nothing else. Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc. I believe this is at the intersection of Dixie Road and Bovaird Drive, on the south side of Bovaird, but I'm not at all sure of that. An actual street address would be wonderful! Also, is there any signage for the Cemetery? Any help appreciated! Thanks, Gay

    1. [CAN-ONT-PEEL] Curley, Ireland>CAnada> 1851 in Peel.
    2. Debbie Bert
    3. Still looking for my Curleys. I have Huge/Hue/Hugh Curley b. about 1794 in Taum, Galway, Ireland. His wife was Bridget b. about 1802 also in the Taum area. Their son Thomas H. Curley was born in 1827 in Ireland. I am not sure when they came to Canada but I suspect it was by 1832. I can't be sure about this. Thomas married in Canada to Susanna Everson in about 1849. The 1851 Chinquacousy Census, Peel Co., Ontario shows Thomas and Susanna have Thomas's parents, Huge and Bridget living with them. I have been trying for years to find out what ever happened to Thomas's parents Hugh and Bridget Curley. I am looking for their place of death, burial, anything. Thomas and his father Hugh were both stone masons (bricklayers). Eventualy Thomas moved down to Michigan to do some brick work and liked it so much that He and his wife moved down to Michigan. Thomas died in 1877. Will gladly share any info with others in this line. Thanks, debbie Additional notes from my Genealogy program: Thomas H. /Curley/ Thomas Curley was born in Ireland and came to Canada and married there. Thomas and wife Susanna moved to Michigan about 1853 or 1854. Records show that Thomas and Susanna were living in Chinquacousy Township, Ontario, Canada in 1851. Later records show that Thomas and Susanna were living in Paisly, Bruce Co., Ontario in 1865 when they signed papers to quit-claim Susanna interest in the estate of her father. (info from Carl Everson) The 1851 Chinquacousy Census, District 4 page 199 shows that Thomas and Susanna also have Thomas's parents in the house, Bridget and Hugh. There is also a boy named Francis Matdam (or Madden) born in Ireland that is only 10 years old living with them. I have no idea who this boy is. It also shows that Thomas and his father are both masons, and that they all live in a frame house that is 1 1/2 stories. Thomas came over to Mi. with Robert Fitch. He was a mason and helped build the Catholic Church in Emmett, MI. After living in the Emmett area to work on the church , he decided to move to Emmett and built a house 4 1/8 miles east of Marlette. Thomas is buried in McLeish Cemetery in Marlette, MI. (Section 21), Decker Rd. South of walker Rd and the cemetery is owned ***********

    1. [CAN-ONT-PEEL] Archive CD Books Canada NEWSLETTER V4#1 - 22 May 2007
    2. Malcolm Moody
    3. Posted by permission of the list administrator. Contents: 1 WELCOME 2 WHAT’S IN THE NEWSLETTER 3 NEW CANADIAN RELEASES (2) 4 COMING SOON 5 NEWS & GOSSIP 6 FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY AND OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS: 7 PREVIOUSLY RELEASED BOOKS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 WELCOME: Welcome to an abbreviated - and rather late - Archive CD Books Canada May newsletter. An explanation can be found under the News and Gossip headline. All previous newsletters may be accessed by logging on to http://www.ArchiveCDBooks.ca/NewsletterArchive.html 2 WHAT’S IN THE NEWSLETTER: Two new releases on the topic of Quebec - a province which, population wise, is currently underrepresented in our catalogue. Hopefully these two new products will help to fill the gap. ----------------------------- 3 NEW CANADIAN RELEASES: * Storied Province of Quebec Vols 1 & 2 - History CA0031-H: According to Col. William Wood, the editor in chief of this book, This is, "... the first which has ever taken the whole Province, Past and Present, as its theme." This claim is even more surprising considering the relatively recent publication date of 1931. On the other hand the magnitude of the task which William undertook with such spectacular results may well have defeated previous attempts. The History section of this book runs to almost 1300 pages of text and illustration and has been packaged as two volumes - although it reads as a single contiguous work. I should hasten to add that William did not attempt this mammoth task on his own but called for contributions from tens of expert historians and authors, many of whose contributions can be found as chapters carrying their own "by line." This has resulted in a history written by the experts in the particular subject of their speciality. In his editing William has been at pains to present the story from both the British, French and Quebecois perspective so that the reader can obtain a complete and rounded view of the events forming the Province. * "Quebecois" is used here to identify someone who considers Quebec to be his "home" as opposed to someone living in Quebec but considered himself an immigrant or visitor from some other nation. There might be a tendency while writing such a work to concentrate only on the overall story of the Province's development but this is certainly not the case here. In addition to the "big picture" history there are separate, detailed, accounts of the history of both Quebec City and of Montreal, of the Regions and of many individual subjects such as Banking, Church and State, Business, the Churches, Education, etc. The list of the individual topics covered is best explored by reviewing the Table of Contents which we have placed in a sampler and made available on our web site for your review. The written details of the history are bought to life by many clear and detailed illustrations, nearly all taken from photographs and beautifully reproduced. If you are looking for a comprehensive history of the Province of Quebec then look no further, you have found it! * Storied Province of Quebec Vols 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 CA0031-S: Originally published as a four volume set by the Dominion Publishing Company in 1931, a fifth volume was added in 1932. The binding and format of the fifth volume is identical to that of the previous four and no explanation is offered for the delay in its release. It is however, just like volumes 3 and 4, solely a collection of additional biographies, so the possibility exists that it contains submissions which were received too late to be included in the previous yearís issue. The Biographies: The biographies comprise fully 3 of the total five volumes in this set and the complete index of biographies in volume 5 provides guided access to over 9,000 individual names - being members of more than 1,500 families. We announced this section of the Storied Province of Quebec in last month's newsletter and a more complete description of it can be found in our on-line catalogue. We have abstracted the names from the book's composite index of biographies and listed them in a file which you may freely access from our web sites "Downloads" page so you can check for the presence of your ancestors. Don't forget, though, that there are many names in the text that do not appear in the index so, when you have the CD, check for pre-marriage names as well. The history section of this book contains both a Table of Contents and an Index while the biographies section contains an index of the primary family names. Both these features of the original book make the contents accessible but our CD reproduction has made access even more convenient because it is now completely computer searchable, and even this access has been enhanced because we have enabled out FastFind technology so your searches can be completed in mere seconds. ---------------------------------- 4 COMING SOON: Another wonderful Gt. War Battalion History book is in production and should be announced in our next newsletter. You seem to be welcoming this series of Gt. War related books and we will be looking to add more of them to our collection. While meeting our international partners we have received lots of newly released products. So many it is going to take us a while to list them all so keep an eye open for many new releases in our on-line catalogue. ----------------------------------- 5 NEWS & GOSSIP: If any of you have genealogy related questions of a general nature - or something specifically related to Archive CD Books - we'd be glad to publish your question in this newsletter to tap into the enormous fund of knowledge which I know is out there. * "THE NGS" in RICHMOND VA. We have just returned from a hectic 8 day road trip to participate as vendors in the four day NGS National Conference in Virginia. This is well outside out normal distance limit but we were also participating in the first mass meeting of the Archive CD Books partners. The official conference attendance exceeded 1,900 and we made many new friends. We were one of only two vendors from Canada in attendance. An excellent, if exhausting, trip. Now we have just a week to get ready for the OGS Conference here in Ottawa! :-) We also hope to have some new Irish topic CDs with us at this show. * DIGITAL GENEALOGIST The third (May) issue of the new Digital Genealogist magazine (delivered by e-mail) has recently been issued. 3. Hi Jane This (below) is all I know of this branch of my MORTON family. I'd love to make a connection with a cousin or two. James Alexander was a Barrister at Law and his brother Robert a sculptor (of marble?). When did they arrive in CAN? I'm not sure, but James and Robert were born in SCO, Robert married in 1873 in Brampton so there is a 23 year time frame. I have letters written 1891-1917 between Mary MORTON, a sister of #1 Adam MORTON, and her cousin Mary MORTON in South Australia where the writer says that Adam's wife Jessie crossed the Atlantic more than 30 times! I also wonder if there were more children born to Adam & Jessie after they left Scotland. I thank you, in advance for any assistance. 3. Glenys, I don't want to duplicate any research you have done, have you checked any census for the Brampton area? I have found a couple of references to them in the 1873-4 directory. 3. Hi Glenys, When did your family come here, what years are we talking about? If they were here in the 1800's I could check my records for them. If it was later, have you checked www.canada411.ca or you could put a query in our newsletter. Are you sure you couldn't just come for the day :)) Jane in Cooksville (Mississauga) Ontario, Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: Glenys Savage <glenys.savage@bigpond.com> To: <can-ont-peel@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2007 8:17 PM Subject: Re: [CAN-ONT-PEEL] Genealogy Meeting > Hi Jane > > How I would like to be present at your OSG meeting - just to ask "where are > my distant cousins now"? 3. Hi Jane: About a month ago I sent a snail mail letter to Famiky History Quebec re info Charles Cameron who had property Peel County, Toronto Township and I have not had any recognition of same. I note Gary Schroder is to be the speaker at the meeting on the 27th. Since my plea is re peel County could you please put a "bug 'in his ear? I am also wondering if I could purchase a transcript of his mmessage, since it is pertinent to my area of search at this time. Thank you Jane for your expertise.
