    1. OFF TOPIC -- Mark YOUR 2006 Calendars NOW!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- This is NOT a political message for any certain party or politician, but after watching the annual Tournament of Roses Parade this morning, held in a heavy downpour of rain (first since 1955), it made me wonder what our voting day will be like as we go from coast-to-coast-to-coast. [Parades are not held on a Sunday, due to a ruling by committee] I have already marked my 2006 calendar with the three Advance Polling days, a Friday, Saturday and Monday -- surely we will have good weather on one of these - do not trust the 23rd as it could be like a report issued by a weatherman. Should anyone not have received cards to date, this map might help you locate riding and candidate(s) -- this message is on behalf of ALL parties:- http://www.ctv.ca/mini/election2006/provincial_list/riding_finder.html Should anyone be so lucky to be heading to warmer climates, visit your local Returning Office and take your Library or even a Telephone bill -- something with name and address to prove you are actually who you state you are! Happy warm vacation! Canadians do not only live in Canada -- those in United States, England and other places vote by MAIL -- ask me if you have not been contacted or do not know procedure.. Our service personnel are already in the process of voting by mail/letter procedure. None of the EARLY votes will be opened until Jan. 23 and I personally predict snow shovel weather for that date!! Remember, the cost of an election is paid by US -- let's ALL take advantage of OUR $$$$ and cast our personal vote. Muriel M. 1. 1911 Census in Automated Genealogy Format
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- We enjoyed our seven year battle for the 1911 census, and let's hope Peel County will soon reach the 100% mark and complete the many pages -- our ancestors! Some genealogical groups are transcribing from the images and have their own sites for storage. These pages will be the complete images and the work has been wonderful. Very often, before checking for the images, the Automated Genealogy format will be much simpler. It is Canada-wide and as soon as a page is claimed, it is sent directly to Library and Archives Canada -- making it simpler for one to locate ancestors. Once located, microfiche is available at libraries or the genealogical society may have already assisted you in your search. Peel County has reached the 76.19% mark -- Ontario is at the 51.62% mark in transcription. Let's join Lunenburg County in Nova Scotia and the Yukon with 100.00 %!!! Should anyone need assistance, please contact me personally -- should I not be able to assist, I have several upon whom I may call for more advice. Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca List Administrator & Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Brampton, ON

    1. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- The Christmas season is a very special time of the year for me, enjoying the family get-togethers and a special gift from my oldest son -- Niagara Falls to see the lights! Many have had bereavements during the past year, many have family members who are ill at the time. Enjoy the days you have with your family because one never knows when "The Clock of Life" will stop ticking. [This was my husband's favorite wood-burning and I will give the words to anyone]. New Year's with the great parade at Pasadena is next week, but after that, let's get these lists really working -- some could use more activity whether queries, history or data. I am certain everyone will enjoy the following with thanks to Keith Rhodenizer of Nova Scotia. This is a beautiful story of the candy cane. As you watch do not click on anything it will automatically flip for you. http://www.angelrays.com/fla/legend.html Muriel -- List Admin

    1. OFF TOPIC - Missing Veterans -- The Year of the Veteran 2005
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To: Hon. Albina Guarnieri; Hon. Bill Graham; Hon. John McCallum Many thanks for the letter with condolences following the death of my husband, a RCNVR veteran of WWII - he is now at rest. However, I strongly feel the Order in Council (P.C. 3264) dated August 14, 1946 should definitely be reopened. I know that the records of 14,100 service personnel will be more likely about 5,000 at the present time. The records were presumably dumped because personnel went "absent without leave or deserted between Sept. 10, 1939 and January 1, 1946". One of the "deserters" passed away Oct. 31, 2005 in The Year of the Veteran -- an engineer, Army lieutenant in charge of Bailey bridges in Europe. His "desertion" was an extra year as a member of the Allied Occupation Force in Holland. However, I did assist my cousin in regaining TRUE veteran status. These missing veterans are "out there" and should contact the Department of Veterans Affairs Canada -- I have phone numbers. The Hon. Bill Graham has committed that National Defence will review an infividual's "deemed never to have served" status for any who come forward -- the title of VETERAN is important, should nursing home care be necessary, due to age of personnel. There is a toll free number re services and benefits - 1-866-522-2122 The Year of the Veteran should be extended for MISSING PERSONNEL. Muriel M. I was looking through a list I made from the York County Marriage Index 1859 - 1869, Canadiana Room, North York Public Library - Film No. MS 248 Reel #24 and here is what I found: Note: This is only the INDEX. Name/Residence/Father/Spouse/Year/Ref. Peel County 1858 - 1864: MAW, James/Toronto Gore/James/Hannah Thompson/1861/33 MAW, John/Toronto Gore/John/Rachel ROGERS/1860/26 I don't know anything about this ROGERS family but I'll see what I can find on them if you like. I was looking for another marriage, when I came across these ones for JAMES & JOHN MAW. I had forgotten I had even done this, which all goes to prove one should check ones own records first. Hope this helps solve the mystery. Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year. Anne -- Anne Stevens Newmarket,Ont.Can. I don't have the time right now to check my details, but if she would contact me directly I would like to compare notes with her.  Just about the time of the death she notes above, two young women (perhaps young children) named McFadden were "adopted" into my family in Inglewood, Peel Co.  It may provide some clues to Eve, and solve a mystery for me as to who these girls were .... Those who have read the posts of myself and Muriel Davidson will be aware of her visits to Sunnybrook Hospital where her husband until recently was resident. Two other residents of Sunnybrook with whom Muriel was aquainted were WWI veterans. Sadly, I have just been advised that one of those WWI veterans, Clare Laking, died yesterday at the age of 106. Mr. Laking was to have presented a wreath at Remembrance Day ceremonies but fell ill and was unable to attend. [Full name: Charles Clarence Laking from Halton Co., ON] The following was taken from CBC News. ============================= First World War veteran dies at 106 Last Updated Sun, 27 Nov 2005 19:09:06 EST One of the last remaining Canadian veterans of the First World War has died. Clare Laking, 106, died at Toronto's Sunnybrook and Women's Health Sciences Centre on Saturday. "Mr. Laking's passing leaves only four Canadian veterans from the Great War," the hospital said in a news release issued Sunday. "It is believed that he was the last Canadian World War I veteran to have seen action, having fought on the front line." The hospital said Laking remained in good health until only weeks before his death, curling until age 96, holding seasons tickets for the Toronto Maple Leafs until age 100 and holding a driver's licence until 102. Laking was 18 when he joined the army against his father's wishes. "My dad was against anything to do with the war," he told CBC News in 2004, as he marked Remembrance Day. "So I said, 'I know, I'll shut him up and enlist.'" He said his father never wrote him, even when he was injured near the end of the war. But they later reconciled and he said in 2004 that he had come to agree with his father's pacifist ideas - that the world should settle its differences without war. Laking was a private with the Canadian Field Artillery, 27th Battery, 4th Brigade. He served in France for two years, stringing telephone wire for field telephones along the trenches. "I'd run for 20 yards and ... then I'd flop, get up and run another 20 yards," Laking said in 2004, recalling his trips to the front line. He suffered a small flesh wound near the end of the war, when shrapnel hit his head. Laking was awarded the French Legion of Honour and the Golden Jubilee Medal. After the war, he farmed and then worked for a series of lumber companies in Toronto. In 1929, he married Helen Paterson, who died in 1993. He is survived by two children, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family intends to hold a small, private funeral, the hospital said. They asked that any donations in his memory be made to the Veterans Comfort Fund [with donation to The Sunnybrook Foundation, 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto (North York), ON M4N 3M5 [Mark "Veterans Comfort Fund" somewhere on cheque]. - Muriel =========================== Gordon A. 3. How many in the Brampton area remember Alf Sutton, who used to live on Third Line West, above Queen Street West? Alf was a member of the North Peel Scout Group Committee and when Holland was liberated by Canadians, he forgot he was in the Army -- used the left-hand Boy Scout handshake. His obituary was in The Brampton Guardian of November 23, and, as it happened, above that of my husband Bill Davidson, who also served on the same committee, as I did. For any who remember Alf and his wife Ethel, the site may still be on www.schmimanskifamilyfuneralhome.com Bill's obituary and photo is at www.obituariestoday.com Should anyone have known Alf and Ethel, you may contact me. 3. Many thanks, Jane -- I knew you would have the answer. When the Bramalea Guardian came into Brampton about 1969 during a Flower Festival weekend, I filed at least 200 Brampton history stories. Some day must go to the Chinguacousy Library to see if the microfilm is available. Many of the businesses are no longer in business -- so it would be great to have a copy of what I learned at that time, e.g. Boyle's Book Store and others. 3. There have been many changes in newspapers during the past years -- it could have been The Conservator, which became The Daily Times, then closed down after being bought by the Thomson chain. The Peel Gazette was also operational then. My suggestion is to go to Peel County Archives or the Chinguacousy Library -- records and possibly even microfilm would be available. Present newspaper is the Brampton Guardian, thrice weekly.
