Hello List, As promised, I am typing below the petition and list of those petitioning for clemency for COOK TEETS, convicted of murdering his wife ROSANNAH LEPPARD in 1883. I hope the length of this email does not break any rules, but without being able to make an attachment, this seemed the best way for everyone to be able to view the list of names. It is as follows: To the Honorable The Minister of Justice for Canada The Petition of the undersigned Humbly Sheweth That Cook Teets lately convicted of the murder of Rosannah Leppard (alias) Rosannah Teets has been totally blind for upwards of thirty years. That considering the nature of the evidence against him and the character of the principal witnesses namely the Leppard family, Your petitioners were surprised at the verdict rendered by the Jury. Your petitioners would submit that notwithstanding the evidence it is quite possible that the poison was obtained by the deceased else where than from Cook Teets or without his knowledge or consent and further that it is quite possible that the said poison was furnished or administered by some others than the prisoner. Your petitioners therefore pray That the death sentence passed on Cook Teets be commuted to such term of imprisonment as you may think fit. Dated this 13th day of November, 1884. List shows SIGNATURE/RESIDENCE/OCCUPATION: (I have placed question marks where the writing is questionable so the transcription is just my best guess - I welcome any comments or questions, or possible corrections.) 1) Robt Lenmke (Lemke?)/Flesherton/Merchant 2) Matthew Richardson/Flesherton/Merchant 3) Robert J. Hello April...... I have looked through my collection here and have made the following corrections to your name list: 3) Robert J. Sproule is correct (The R J Sproule Block in Flesherton was named after him as I think he owned it basically) 4) Aaron Munshaw (Owned a hotel in Flesherton, starting in 1849. The Hotel called "Munshaw House" is still there and now space is rented for commercial businesses) 43) Thomas Gilbert (Not sure about the Inspector note, however I do know he brought mail from Artemesia Corners (Flesherton) to Vandeluer twice a week, a distance of 6 1/2 miles around the 1870's, and Im pretty sure he lived in the Vandeluer area as he gave some land to build a church many moons ago.) 59) I believe it is a W.A. Milburn he was a Carriage Builder in Flesherton in 1887. 83) There was a Mr. Caldwell who owned a Tavern in Markdale, however Im not sure if thise is the same man as you have. 85) Wm. Lucas was from Markdale and was a banker. (Wm. Lucas & Co., currently the Bank Of Montreal in Markdale) 92) G.S. Bowes is correct (A George S. Bowes was a prominent citizen in Markdale, a sketch of his home is shown in the 1880 Grey County Atlas. 100) There was a J. G. Irving living at that time in Markdale. However he was a very well known Pump Maker and not a Piano Maker as you have written. He had patented a valve system to keep dirt out of water as it was pumped up, in order to not hinder the valves from working properly. I do have a small request if it is not too much trouble. There are 2 names of which I am interested in as I am related to them. One is the #107 Thomas Penelton, and the other is #16 William Hainsworth. I was wondering if it was not too much trouble could I get a copy of their signatures, or even a copy of the entire document if that is possible? If not I understand. I can give you my mailing adress off list if you wish... Thanks again for all your trouble, and sharing this info. Dave W.
