I am wondering if anyone can tell me anything about an Edward McMahon who spent most of his life in Grey Co., Ontario, Canada. His obituary stated: Hanover Post Thurs. July 8, 1920 Ayton: Died at Lockport, NY, Mr. Ned McMahon, an old war veteran of 65 and pioneer settler of Normanby. His remains were sent to Ayton and internment took place on Saturday. Rev. Father Halm of the Ayton R.C. Church conducted the obsequies. War veteran of 65 would mean he fought in tha States I would assume?? Anyone know how I would go about tracing information about this? My Cornelius McMahon settled in the same town in Ontario and I am hoping to find a connection between the two families. Patricia in Alberta
The way you've written this would make it appear that he was 65 years old, obviously too young for the Civil War. If it was written as veteran of '65, it would make more sense. It's most likely that he was a veteran of '66, the Fenian Raids. This was the usual way of referring to those who served. The Fenians began threatening in 1865 but I don't think any raids are recorded until CampoBello in 1866. Ridgeway was the most famous raid of course. I would more likely assume the entry to be a typo and try the Fenian info first. If he had served in the US, it would have been referred to differently. No individual years were referred to when mentioning service. He would have been a veteran of the Civil War, the War between the States, the War against the Southern Insurrection, etc. If you decide to go with the US assumption, you'll have to check all the northern States as there are estimates of as many as 60,000 Canadians joining up and each State had many enlistments. The most popular were Michigan, Ohio, New York, Maine, Pennsylvania, Vermont but I've seen a lot of listings in Maryland, New Jersey, etc. Some had Canadian regiments.
