I have been searching for some time for a couple of early marriages with no luck, so wondering if anyone has ever come across marriages of the following : Jane BOWES and James CREIGHTON (moved to Owen Sound where James was a shoemaker) Elizabeth BOWES and John McCLEAN (a merchant in Owen Sound?) I estimate that both marriages took place sometime between 1848 and 1858. The BOWES family had settled in the Meaford/Singhampton area, but James Bowes and his sons assisted in opening up many roads, in particular, 9th Street West, Owen Sound, and the highway between Meaford and Thornbury. The family story goes that while in Owen Sound, daughter Elizabeth, kept house and cooked for her father and brothers, "met John McLean, a rising young merchant, who she later married, and who was in partnership with his two brothers in a wholesale and retail grocery store."
