    3. Alexander Purves was born in 1838 at Peebleshire, Scotland, the son of pioneers George Purves and Mary Turnbull Purves. He and his wife Christiana settled on Lot 43, Concession 1 SDR in 1863. They had originally come to Wentworth County. They had a family of nine: Ralph Lehman Purves (b. 1863) who farmed in Southern Manitoba; John Purves (b. 1865) of Bentinck Township; Mary Purves (b. 1866), Mrs. Walker of Walkerton; George Purves (b. 1867) who married Eliza Stade and lived in Toronto; Hugh Purves (b. 1869); Alexander Landers Purves (b. 1871) of Pike Stone River, Maniotba; William Purves (b. 1872) of Berkley; Minnie Maud Purves (died in infancy); and Janet Purves (b. 1876) George Purves II purchased 45 acres of the farm after his brother's death in 1872 and he sold to William Herd in 1889. Some of the Purves children found homes among the neighbours. One son, John, lived with Meg and George Herd on Lot 40, Concess 2 SDR where he helped neighbours with farm work and dynamited tree stumps and large stones. John was a deaf-mute who was sponsored by relatives to get educational training at Brantford. In his last days, he lived in a log cabin owned by Matthew Baker on Lot 20, Concession 1 SDR. There is a three-page write-up on the family beginning on Page 295, with pictures of Mary Turnbull Purves, George Purves I with his daughter, Euphemia, George Purves II and Emma Booking; and four generations of Purves (John Purves, Everette Willis, Euphemia Purves William and William George Willis). I will send this to you separately, and can scan the pictures for you if you like. It states, partly, George Purves was born in 1799 in the town of Peebles, Peebleshire, Scotland. He married Mary Turnbull who was born in 1895 also at Peebles, Scotland. They had a family of seven: William, John, Janet, Euphemia, Mary, George Jr. and Alexander. The family arrived in Canada in 1857, leaving the oldest son, William and wife, Isabel McGauchie in Scotland.
