Good point, Malcolm. It also illustrates why genealogists should learn about the history and geography of the places where their ancestors lived. This will often explain why our families frequented places that might seem strange today, or even give you clues as to where their information might be located, when it is not found in the "obvious" spot. One specific case which springs to mind was a "birth" which was reported to have been in Frontinac County (Kingston) where the family was supposed to be living in living in Addington County (next county west.) It turned out that the family lived in a small village - more or less a post stop - just inside Addington and Kingston was the closest place where a birth could be registered. Although Meaford sounds as if it was large, and busy, enough to have it's own birth registration facilities (either a minister or a government office - this was a period of transition) there may have been some reason why the family chose to register in Owen Sound (perhaps they had to go there anyway.) I don't believe this would have been particularly unusual and it seems that many people / families, at that time, considered these government required registrations a nuisance to be dealt with as expeditiously as possible (or not at all in some cases.) Little enough but I hope it helps. Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc. President: Malcolm Moody PO Box 11 Manotick Ontario, K4M 1A2 Canada.
