Hello List I have a David Olmstead who died at the House of Refuge in Markdale, January 12, 1912, but he isn't in the Markdale Cemetery. Would anyone know if there is another cemetery in Markdale? He isn't in Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford either. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Pat
Hello Pat While this reply isn't specifically about Markdale's House of Refuge, it might answer your question.... The House of Refuge in Wellington County, now the Wellington Co Museum & Archives, had its own cemetery. Unfortunately, probably due to the financial circumstances, there aren't any individual gravestones, but there is a memorial marker (erected in more recent history) in a stand of trees by the road where the inmates were buried. Markdale was actually the Grey County House of Refuge. In order to receive funding, the 'managers' had to have records that would include admissions and deaths. Perhaps the county archives will be able to help you in this regard http://www.greyroots.com/ Author Pat Mestern's book, "Anna, A child of the Poor House" is the fictional story of a child born and raised in the Wellington Co. House of Refuge, aka the poor house. Pat Mestern incorporates historical facts and you might enjoy the insights of poor house life even though it's not specifically of your research area.
