    3. Hi Kim: I imagine this is the 1901 census entry you mention: District: ON GREY (South/Sud) (#66) Subdistrict: Durham (Town/Ville) C-3 Page 1 Details: Schedule 1 Microfilm T-6469 McDonald Alex'r M Head M Sep 10 1850 Engineer Presbyterian McDonald Harriet F Wife M Dec 11 1860 McDonald John C M Son S Apr 5 1882 Butter maker McDonald Thomas Wm M Son S Aug 19 1883 Student McDonald Alexander H M Son S Jul 4 1888 McDonald Norman C M Son S Nov 5 1896 McDonald Martha U F Daughter S Dec 27 1898 All born Ontario. Kim, you really need to go to your local LDS Family History centre and look up the birth reg for John Clark McDonald to see if this census entry is the correct family. Perhaps the names that are not familiar to your father in this census are for John's siblings who died very young, moved far away, etc. Unfortunately, our memories sometimes are a bit faulty, as mine is <smile>! Or they may have been called by a middle or nickname and so don't appear as he remembers them on the census entry. To find a Family History Centre near you: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp They will help you a lot and if they don't have the correct films on-site, they can order them for you for a small fee. The registration should show the mother's name so that will help you determine if this is your family on the 1901 census. If you are not near or cannot go to a Family History Centre, I use Marian Windley to do my registration, cemetery, census, etc lookups and she is VERY reliable, will email you the entries, and charges about $2 cdn for each one which is less than the cost of ordering in the films you will need, if your local Family History Centre doesn't have them in stock. If they are in stock it doesn't cost anything to look at them there. Here is Marian's email: windley@rogers.com I found your family on the 1911 census of Grey South, Durham town, District 74, subdistrict 33, page 4, and to view the page go to: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/1911/006003-100.01-e.html Check the Ontario box, and type in Durham in the search box, change number of references per page to MAX, click submit query. On the page that comes up scroll own to entry number 49 which will say Grey South, Durham Town, subdistrict 33, click on Associated Pages. This district has not yet been indexed on Automated Genealogy. On the page that comes up click on page 4. I use the left column and you can as well if you have Adobe acrobat reader on your computer. The entry begins on line 36, and the address is Queen Street: McDonald, John Head April, 1882 ON Scotch Laborer in Livery Barn Methodist Lizzie Wife Feb, 1886 ON German Lillie May? Dau December, 1905 Violet Clara Dau May, 1907 Lila Cristen? Dau September, 1909? WITTLE, Katie Mother-in-law January?, 1855 ON Lutheran No occupation and there is other info like insurance, wages in the far right columns which you can look at yourself. So now you have Elizabeth's mother's name as well. You can't rely on transcribers for your info - sometimes you have to troll through the pages yourself to find your family. The enumerator may have spelled their surnames differently than you expect or spelled them phonetically, and that is what will show on the transcription, not the way your family spells their name. To err is human... Kim, I really do think the 1901 census entry is also for your family. Just too much coincidence with the middle initial of John and his birth month matching up with the entry on the 1911 census. You really have to check out the birth reg for him to find out for sure, i.e. mother Harriet. Also, if you are able to, get a copy of the actual birth reg, not the transcript, for Violet as you may find the mother's surname to be slightly different in spelling from the way it was transcribed. You should be able to find all the birth, marriage, death reg's for these people, up to certain years, of course, at the LDS family history centre or using a researcher or volunteer. I did not find Elizabeth either on the 1901 census. Get the marriage reg for her and John and that will give you the parents' names and hopefully place of birth, etc. Grey County Branch Ontario Gene Society: http://www.bmts.com/~bgogs/ Grey County GenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ongrey/ That's about all that I can find.
