Hello all: I am new to this list and am trying to break down a brick wall. I am hoping that someone on this list may already know this family, so that I can confirm them as mine, or keep searching. My great grandfather was John James Clark and on his first marriage to Maria Hannigan in 1874 in Parry Sound district, he said he was born in Owen Sound. 6191-74 James CLARK, 22, farmer, Owen Sound, Carling, s/o John & Mary, married Maria HANNIGAN, 23, Carling, Welland Co., d/o Richard & Rebecca, witn: J. M. FINLAYSON & Savila HANNIGAN, both of Carling twp., 18 April 1874 at Carling twp [as written] This would make his birth year somewhere around 1851. I have found a John and Mary Clark in Sydenham Tp. 1851 census, that fit: Clark, John, 34, Ire., CE, Blacksmith Clark, Mary, 34, Ire., CE Clark, Jane, 7, CW Clark, William, 4, CW Clark, John, 2, CW 1861 census: John, 43, is living on his own in Sullivan Tp, still says married, but Mary was not found. The 2 boys are living nearby with other families. William was 15 and James was 9. Jane wasn't found (she would be about 17). 1871 census: John Clark, 52, widowed, blacksmith, living alone in Parry Sound. My John James wasn't found in the 1871 census (or the 1881, for that matter). In 1871, he should be 19-21. There was a James Clark that applied for land in Muskoka 14 March 1872 -- Draper Tp. After my John James married a second time in 1882 to Phoebe Ann Hannigan, he worked as an engineer on the boats. I have found a marriage for a Jane Clark and this ties the other families in: William Wallace GUIDY (GOUDY?), 23, b. Atlantic Ocean, res. Bentinck Tp., parents: William GUIDY and Jane NEWBIGGINS. Jane CLARKE, 20 Sullivan To., res. Bentinck Tp, parents John CLARKE and Mary HAMILTON. July 20, 1864 Grey Co. 1030056 I am wondering if anyone knows anything more about these families. Dorothy (Clark) Hiltz Collingwood
