Found in the Gazetteer and Directory of the County of Grey for 1865-6, a list of "Landowners in Grey County 1865 - 1866". The list shows "West of Garafraxa Road", Concession 1, Lot 21 belonging to W. H. G. COLLES. I have read that concessions are divisions of a township, each being a strip of land one and one quarter mile wide, such concessions are divided into lots of, usually, 200 acres. In the early to mid 1800s, how would one have obtained such a lot: Would this have been under an immigration scheme or Crown grant? William COLLIS and his sons were immigrants from Ireland and all of them seem to be quite well educated. Could William have bought the land? Is there anyone that could educate me in this matter! Thank you for reading. June
Hello June: An excellent guide to land records Ontario, that is available on-line, is at the Archives of Ontario web site. http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/guides/pdf/rg_215_grant_to_patent.pdf William could have purchased the land, or received a grant. If you would like, I will check the Ontario Lands Records Index for you under his name. He is mentioned also in the Bentinck Township History book -- Farm Lanes of Bentinck http://www.bmts.com/~rdc/viewinde.htm -according to the index Colles, William 85,217,218 I could check those page references for you as well.
