    3. Sorry. normally those that mention UE do so for being recognized as such. Like those in the US who mention being descended from the Mayflower Compact or those in Australia who mention about being 1st fleet descendants. The British decided to reward those who moved to Canada as Loyalists after the Rev. War and passed a law stating that anyone who "joined the standard" previous to 1783 and moved to Canada would forever be able to use the initials UE (Union (or United) of the Empire). This also applied to their sons and daughters. All were able to apply for free grants of land. SUE and DUE were able to get 200 Acres each. 3. Hello JK: In my absence it seems I opened a hornets nest, so I missed the fun while the letters were hopping. My UE person is the George from Elizabethtown, Leeds, County. That is usually designated after his name. There is another from Kingston, however NOT mine. I believe Bercis is related but that is another matter. The Joseph I mentioned was the grandson of George UE. It was actually the father of that Joseph who applied for the grant and got it in 1837 . Initially I sent this inquiry to Simcoe County and was transferred to Grey. because of the St. Vincent Township, but just checking a short time ago I see on the official papers it is listed as SIMCOE County. Has there been a change in boundaries since that time? One of the replies mentions Meaford, but that is far west of the line between Grey and Simcoe. However I had best not bother you more at this point and again try Simcoe. Sorry about the trouble, but perhaps we all know a little more about the Loyalists. I think the term "American Loyalists "gives a different slant . People tend to think of it being loyal to America as it is now rather than as a British Colony as it really was then.We forget our history or perhaps did not 'get it' in the first place. With thanks.
