Do we assume he was SUE; because UE's weren't born in Canada, or do you know for sure he was UE from a listing somewhere. An OIC normally didn't give the lot granted. It simply said the amount of property you were granted by either the land grant board or the executive council. You would need some other instrument issued by Attorney Generals Office, Surveyor Generals Office, etc. A fiat, warrant, etc. Most of those granted land as UE, DUE, SUE, ML, etc never lived on the land. They usually sold the warrant, fiat, etc to someone else because they had no intention of moving and becoming a settler. It was free money. 1834 was very late for getting UEL land under terms. The laws had been extended a number of times and I think the final extension went to 1836. JK Delphine Large wrote: > Hello: > > Joseph J. BUCK b 1812 Leeds County, Lansdowne Township. Please explain SUE, UE, DUE, ML UEL and OIC. Thanks :-) JK wrote: > Do we assume he was SUE; because UE's weren't born in Canada, or do you > know for sure he was UE from a listing somewhere. > An OIC normally didn't give the lot granted. Hi: OIC - Order in Council - land was granted to those in the now-USA who stayed loyal to Britain and they were called UEL's - United Empire Loyalists. The SUE perhaps means Son of a United Empire Loyalist, DUE - daughter of an Empire Loyalist. Type United Empire Loyalists in to your search engine, google, etc and you will be able to read more about them. Marg Connie wrote: >Please explain SUE, UE, DUE, ML UEL and OIC. Technically speaking, no one in the now-USA was granted land as a UE. It was for loyalists FROM the US and you had to be in Canada and had to prove allegiance to the crown prior to 1783. You then had to swear allegiance in Canada and meet a number of conditions These were changed about 6 times between 1816 and 1832 JK marg mcfarlane wrote: > Hi: > > OIC - Order in Council - land was granted to those in the now-USA who > stayed loyal to Britain and they were called UEL's - United Empire > Loyalists.
