    3. I received this but will not be coming to Owen Sound in the near future. Can anyone help this man from the USA. Below is his request> Jopie Hi: I was wondering if there is any way to find an obituary for Finlay McKay who died August 31,1886. He died in Sydenham Township. He was a farmer and fell off of a wagon. The obituary might tell some useful information if he is my great great grandfather. I will attach the registration. Thank you for any help that you might give me. Royce -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Version: 7.1.385 / Virus Database: 268.2.6/286 - Release Date: 3/20/2006

    1. Early travel to St. Vincent / Meaford
    2. Bonnie Anderson
    3. Re: news item of about 1926 from Shelley in BC About Laurence Bowes - "Born in Ireland, he came to Canada at the age of 8 with his parents and made the trip to Meaford with oxen." If Lawrence was 84 in 1926, that means he arrived about 1840. An early 1841 Ontario map show two small settlements near Meaford, while the majority of settlement was shown farther south along the Great Lakes. My great great grandfather came from Scotland to St. Vincent Township about 1832. I often wondered what lured him there and how he got there. I have discussed it with other genealogists and have developed a few theories. 1. They came by boat via the great lakes and Lake St. Clair. 2. They travelled along Yonge St., the road built in 1796 under the orders of Lord Simcoe for the transport of troops to Lake Simcoe. Thus, it would be possible to travel along Yonge to Lake Simcoe and then by water to Meaford / St. Vincent Township in 1832. I know John Vail arrived by boat and settled there in 1824. I have read the history of Yonge street which mentions the lure of furs, but there must have been other reasons for settlers to travel so far to such an undeveloped area. He married a Scottish lady there in 1838 and then ended up in Toronto by 1840 where his first daughter was born. He was from urban Scotland. I am interested in hearing from someone who knows the history of settlement in the area to tell me what attracted people there and what route would have been used in 1832. 1. COMBINED AGES OF MEAFORD MEN REACH 862 YEARS (WATSON, BOWES, BROWN)
    2. Shelley H
    3. I have a partial newspaper article that I thought might be of interest to others. It is only an excerpt and undated, but I am guessing it's from about 1926. (The article is apparently about 10 different Meaford men, but my excerpt only mentions 3.) COMBINED AGES OF MEAFORD MEN REACH 862 YEARS Remarkable total made up of ages of ten local residents still in good health. Yet another of Meaford's "young boys" celebrated his eightieth birthday here Sunday in the person of Mr. Alfred Watson of the 7th Line (St. Vincent Twp.). Tall, erect and still walking with a springy step, no one would suspect the changes in Grey County that he has witnessed and fact that he shingled his barn a few days ago would scarcely seem amiss, for his genial smile and merry twinkle of the eyes gives direct contradiction. But staying young around Meaford is a habit and facts cannot be refuted. "Fred" Watson was born in Portland Township, near Kingston eighty years ago Sunday and came to Meaford 72 years ago, when there was but one store where the town now stands, and Mr. Watson is but one of many who "watched Meaford and surrounding country grow". Always a good farmer from the early days he was if anything, an even better judge of horseflesh and his knowledge of treating and conditioning animals made his advice sought from far and near. He has not yet worn glasses for there has been no indication of the need. Another young boy is Lawrence Bowes of the 11th Line. He is just in his 84th year and by next June will have lived sixty years on the top of the biggest hills around the countryside. Born in Ireland, he came to Canada at the age of 8 with his parents and made the trip to Meaford with oxen. Straight as a string, his good nature always to the fore, he is still a strong personality and his sense of humour infectious. He too, never uses glasses and with an old muzzle loader, well over a century old, is a deadly shot. He can obtain pigeons for pot pie with precision that would make our best shots green with envy. A near neighbour on the same line, down at Bayview on the gravel road, is William Brown who is eighty past and who this season as before, insisted on pitching "on and off" all the hay and early grain from his spacious acres. Tall and straight as a ramrod, his too, is a springy step and with his keen eyes, he might easily pass for some twenty years younger. He is a constant visitor at the CNE and last year with his wife, tood, an extensive trip through the Canadian West. (Excerpt ends here.) If anyone is connected to Alfred Watson or Lawrence Bowes, I'd be pleased to share and compare information. Shelley in BC

    1. CRAWFORD
    2. Jopie Loughead
    3. I am the great grandson of Rev. James Crawford cir. 1816-1883 & Sarah Eyres cir. 1835-1887. I am attempting to trace family siblings and ancestors of Rev. James Crawford. I have obtained a copy an article copied from the Wiarton Echo, I believe dated July 27, l883 which states Mr. S. Crawford received word that his brother was dying at Parry Sound. It goes on to say that he left for Parry Sound but his brother died before he arrived, and goes on to qote my great grandfather;s obituary. I would appreciate any assistance anyone can give me in identifying S. Crawford. Attempts I have made, identified a Samuel Crawford who lived in Wiarton at that time having moved there from Kempel following retirement in 1866, I have obtained a list of Samuels sibblings who were from Drumholme Parish, County Donegal, Ireland. On the lists are two Samuel's and one James. One of the Samuel's would be correct as he was listed as having been baptised in 1806, corresponding with the Samuel from Wiarton, however the single listed James is listed as having been baptised in 1808. Methodist church records indicate Rev. James Crawford preached at Holland 1856, Arran 1857-58, Walkerton 1859-60, Mulmer 1861. My home address is : Garry Crawford 39 Lake Forest Dr., R.R.#3 Parry Sound, Ontario P2A 2W9 email: gcrawford3@hotmail.com I would appreciate any suggestions, postings or publications that could be made to further my quest. I am presently in Florida, and will be returning to Parry Sound in mid April. If you wish me to forward monies for these postings etc. please advise by email. 3. Readers: Please see letter below sent to me regarding Letter sent last night. Thank you Marg for clarifying this. Korleen Subject: Re: [Grey Co.] Archives free research Hi Korleen: Am a bit confused and wonder if other list members might also be, by your phrase "offering free research all week". Does this mean they will do research FOR you, or what is mentioned on this web page: http://www.greyroots.com/events-at-grey-roots/ ATTENTION RESEARCHERS FREE ADMISSION TO READING ROOM ALL WEEK. Just thought I'd bring it to your attention. Could be some folks other than just me, who thought it means/meant that they would do research for you. Thanks for letting us know about the events. Perhaps it might be a good idea to post their main page web address as well: http://www.greyroots.com/ Marg
