I am searching for the family of Lewis C. Smith of Glenelg Township and Elizabeth Lee of Holland Township. They lived in Glenelg until about 1902. Family stories say they may have gone to the Tilbury area. I have been unable to trace them there. Their family consisted of Charlotte born 1879; Elizabeth born 1883; Mary born 1887; Jane (1901 Census says June, but Jane is more probable) born 1887; Robert born 1889; and David born 1894 (!901 Census says 1874, but more likely 1894). Any help greatly appreciated. Sincerely Carol Small
Hello Tom From Municipal Records in Ontario History and Guide by Fraser Dunford. Toronto : Ontario Genealogical Society, 2005 p. 148 - Meaford St. Vincent Grey County Formerly Peggys Landing, then Stephensons Landing 1845 name changed to Meaford 1874 town 2001 amalgamated into Meaford Municipality On the web site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wjmartin/wm-c_50.htm There is no George Chesterman listed - I will leave it to you to check variant spellings. These are Wesleyan Methodist baptisms that have been recorded. Meaford had a disastrous fire in 1883 which wiped out much of the pioneer town, including one of two Methodist churches and its parsonage (Wesleyan Methodist). The records would likely have been destroyed at that time. The other Methodist church Methodist Episcopal Church erected a building in 1883. With the information I have had hand, I do not know if they were in the area before this time. However, in 1882, in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, the marriage record of my great grandparents shows that my great grandfather, George Chesterman, was born in Meaford. The best estimate of the date of birth is 15 Aug 1858. George's parents were David James Chesterman and Martha Sandys, both born in England. The 1861 England census shows that David, Martha, and George had returned to England before that census, and George's birthplace was recorded as Canada. They were also in England for the 1871 census, but returned to Ontario before the 1881 census in Lanark County. David's occupation in 1861 was "Grocer", in 1871 it was "Wherehousman", and in 1881 it was "Clerk". The 1881 census recorded their religion as "Methodist Canada". Family records indicate that David was a Methodist minister, although there is no mention of this in the 1893 Perth Courier newspaper report of David's death. Although I am looking for some way to verify George's birthplace as Meaford, I have included the above detail about his father, David, in hopes that it might provide a clue as to where to look. I realize that civil registration did not start until at least 1867. Are there any records or books about what was happening in Meaford in 1858? Is there any information about individuals who were sent to the Grey County area from England, particularly around 1858? Tom Beatson Phoenix, Arizona USA ============================== New! Hello All, First a big thank you for those that answered my last query about Annie McLean and John McLauchlin ! Now I seem to have another problem. This time with Annie's sister Catherine McLean Catherine was born Aug. 18, 1867. She married Hector M(a)cDonald b. Sept 14, 1861. They had children Alec, Jessie and Ann according to the 1901 Census for Artemesia, Grey Co., Ontario. Were Hector's parents Malcolm and Jessie McDonald who appear on the 1881 Census for Artemesia, Grey Co. ? Next problem; I have Hector McDonald, b. abt 1861/2 listed on the 1881 Census with parents Alex and Catherine McDonald. He married Catherine McLean, thought to be born around 1867. Hector is reported to have moved to Wyoming, USA later in the 1880's where he had a ranch. His cousins Colin, Donald aka Dan and Neil Beaton are supposed to have worked on this ranch. I cannot find Hector and Catherine McDonald on the 1900 or later US census but have found Colin and Neil in Laramie Co., Wyoming where they each had cattle ranches. Who were Catherine's parents ? All help appreciated ! Ann Ward da.ward@sympatico.ca

Hello All, I have recently found the marriage of Annie McLean (22) and John McLauchlin (28) which took place in Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada on Nov. 23, 1887. Ontario Registration #014920 /87. Annie was born in Priceville, Grey Co., Canada West [according to her marriage registration] on June 13, 1865 [according to the 1900 Census for Laramie Co., Wyoming, USA.] Her parents are listed on her marriage registration as Alex McLean and Ann McMillan. There is an Alexander McLean, aged 43, Ann aged 38, with 5 children under 5 in Proton, Grey Co., Ontario on the 1881 Census. Annie is not listed with them. There seems to be quite a gap between Annie's birth in 1865 and that of the next child, Alexander, b. about 1876 listed in Alex and Ann McLean's household , unless of course other children were also elsewhere or some had already died. Are these Annie's parents and siblings ? Any help appreciated. Ann Ward da.ward@sympatico.ca
A new system has been added at http://www.tavistock.net/gedview which will become part of the Tavistock web site when opened in May. It's an on-line web genealogy program (basically similar to Persoanl Ancestry File, Lineages, Brothers Keeper, etc but with many more features) with a wide assortment of charts and options for the public, as well as including a number of innovative ways for contributors to look after their gedcoms. I'm initially looking for 3 individuals from this list who have done their own research and have gedcoms from the Grey area and who would like to participate in the site. The info would be made public but privacy controls are built in for each individual gedcom. You would control your own data and be able to take public input and approve any changes. You can see a preliminary setup at http://www.tavistock.net/gedview Only the "Tavistock & Area" gedcom is available for viewing at present and then only for dead persons. It is merely meant to show how the system works without interfering with current system input and configuration. Of course, live persons will be shown when it goes on-line. Currently, about 25,000 names are in the system. I am looking for persons with good sized gedcoms whose last century roots are in Oxford, Perth and Waterloo and whose forebears moved westward into the Huron District. This will allow for the updating and linkage of the gedcoms from the base counties already in the system. Although the site will be open to the public, this data will be protected by privacy controls. Only contributors will have more specific access and be able to alter their own data or add additional controls. Of course, contributors will have access to current databases and receive additional research help. JK

Is anyone on the list researching these families? David Brown, a weaver, (b. Scotland abt. 1820) lived in Meaford approx 1859 to 1877. He and his wife Elizabeth (perhaps nee MacCormick?) had (at least) three children: David b 1855 Angeline b 1860 Amelia b 1862 Son David moved to Walter's Falls and operated the woollen mill there. He and his wife Christine (nee Ellen Jones) had the following chldren: Lotta b 1875 Olive b. 1886 Jersey b. 1887 Edward b. 1880 Christina (Chrissy) b. 1884 (My Grandmother - d. 1816) David Brown Sr. moved to Walter's Falls after his wife died in 1886. He died there in 1896, but I believe he is buried in Meaford/Lakeview. David Brown Jr and his wife are buried in Walter's Falls United Church cemetery. I would appreciate any further information and would be pleased to share the rest that I have.

Hi Bev, I'll begin this by letting you know that Simcoe, Ontario isn't in Grey County, but Norfolk County. It's a lovely community (I have family that recently moved to the area). At any rate, I looked to see if I could find anything on the Kniffen family for you. I found the birth registration for one of David's siblings, born in Norfolk County.
