    1. Owen Sound in 1905
    2. Cindy Paradis
    3. Hi All I was just wondering if someone could help me out a bit with the geographical, history of Owen Sound. I have information here that tells me that my Great Grandparents lived at the corner of River, and Peel in 1905 when their second child was born. I have been looking at my Owen Sound map of today, along with a copy of the Owen Sound Street Directory prior to 1909 trying to figure out where River & Peel would meet, but it does not make sense to me. According to my copy of the Street Directory River St, was at 1st Avenue East, south of 10th street, and Peel Street was at 11th Street East, Looking at the map of today I don't see how this is possible unless I am looking at the map upside down, or if the Street Directory is not right. Is 11th Street not North of 10th street? If your standing in the middle of 10th street looking toward the Harbor is that not North? Does anyone know where I can find an Old Owen Sound map that would have the old street names on it, before they went to the numbering system. Thanks Cindy(Confused in Saskatoon)

    3. Good Morning All I have a question since you are familular with the area and I am from out of province. I am looking for burial info, death records, imigration records or anything someone may know of the following two people (or their parents): John Mason born between 1825-1828 in England son of William and Mary Mason died November 3, 1875 in Markdale Susan Tribble born aprox 1834 in England daughter of Richard Tribble and Susannah Wright died May 30, 1930 in Markdale They were married February 14, 1865 in Peel as residents of Chinguacousy. Neither John nor Susan are burried in the Markdale Cemetery. John was most likely a Free Mason. Is there a special Free Mason burial location? Could they have been cremated? Is there a way that I could find out about cremations in the area? A few of us have been searching Grey and Dufferin areas and have not been able to come up with anything further on these two elusive people. I look forward to your suggestions. Sue

    3. Hi Jopie, I took a few minutes out to do a couple of searches in our CD copy of "A History of the County of Grey", our catalogue number CA0130. I found nothing under the spelling "Flemming" or for a place/house called Forest Lawn. Searching for "Fleming" however was a very different story! As I'm sure you are aware the Fleming name figures large in the History of Grey since it's earliest settlement. So much so I was a little swamped and couldn't spend the hours it would need to read and fully understand all implications of the "hits" the search generated. There were a couple which might be of specific help though: One was in the Appendix which contained a reprint of the Directory of the County for 1865 and which lists James Fleming as residing on Concession 6, Lot 9. This same directory also has an entry for William Fleming living in the village of Kilsyth which seems to be a bit of a suspicious coincidence since there were only 8 name entries for the whole village! The other was a listing of a James Fleming signing up in Owens Sound to "do his part" in the Great War (248th Battalion) which wouldn't have attracted my attention particularly except that the previous line was for a William Fleming signing up in Kilsyth! As this would be 1914 or so this is probably the next generation of Flemings who were signing up, so the names may, or may not, be meaningful. I'd say your lady might well consider that an extra "m" has been added to the family name at some time and should see if she can find enough factual matches between her Flemmings and the famous Grey Flemings to give her confidence in claiming them as her own. 3. Hi Jopie, Sorry I couldn't send this directly to Mari-Lou as her email address was deleted. There was a James Flemming/Fleming living in Derby Township on Concession 6 Lot 9 as well as other Flemmings living on the same Concession. I believe James Flemming had a twin name John both born 1830. You might want to try the museum to see if they have anything on the Flemming Estate. Has Mari-Lou try searching land records or perhaps searching for a will? Hope this helps Brenda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jopie Loughead" <jopiel@sympatico.ca> To: <CAN-ONT-GREY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 05, 2006 10:42 AM Subject: [Grey Co.] Flemming House > Hi List, > I know we are searching in Derby Township and I hope someone in the area > can help. 3. Hi List, I know we are searching in Derby Township and I hope someone in the area can help. The lady is scanning some pictures and will post them so someone may regonize the house. Jopie Hello, I'm hoping you can help me! I have been searching for sometime for what must be a historical place - if it still exists. But I have had no luck finding any information at all about the residence, or the town, all that I've found so far is that it was/is located in Grey County. I am mostly curious to know if the following residence still exists. I have many of my great grandfather's photos of his house from 1890, on the back they all say: Residence of James Flemming 1890 Forest Lawn Kilsyth, Ontario I have been searching for a while and literally can not find ANY information on this home (which was a large estate with beautiful lawns), nor this town. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm sure this photo collection would be of great interest to some heritage society or the Flemming family. Thank you! Methodist Source Information: Census Place Ward 3, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario Family History Library Film 1375892 NA Film Number C-13256 District 149 Sub-district C Division 1 Page Number 9 Household Number 41 The age for Janet/Jenett Proctor is correct and "New Haven" in the baptism below may well be New Haven, Connecticut, in which case the people looking for this family may have to start searching there. Perhaps they should also look at the 1861 Bentinck census to see if they can find the family and if the mother is still alive at that point. I imagine the date of that census was before the marriage of John Proctor and Margaret Sutherland October 19, 1861. On the 1881 census, Sarah Ann, or whoever gave the info to the enumerator, said Sarah Ann was born in Ontario and she is 5 years older than Janet so perhaps they were back and forth to the US, or perhaps Sarah was also born in the US and the 1881 census info is incorrect. 3. I am trying to find out some information on my wife's family. Once I find I'm on solid ground, I would plan to pay a visit to Owen Sound to access source records directly. My wife's G-grandfather Joseph Coulter married Christina Stevenson in Owen Sound on 15 Sep 1887. #004194-87 (Grey Co): Joseph COULTER, 25, iron moulder, Chatsworth, Toronto, s/o David COULTER & Mary EDGAR, married Christena STEPHENSON, 21, Toronto, Owen Sound, d/o Foster STEPHENSON & Ellen RANKIN, witn: Samuel COULTER of Chatsworth & Mary McKINNON of Owen Sound, 15 Sept 1887 at Owen Sound We have a newspaper clipping on the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary held in Toronto. (One son, J Edgar Coulter, died in 1957 and would likely have hosted the event). The clipping reads as follows: "Toronto on Wednesday, when Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Coulter, 37 Alhambra Avenue, will be feted at a family dinner party and later in the evening will be “at home” to their many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Coulter are former residents of Chatsworth, Ont. The bridegroom of half a century ago was born in Chatsworth, his parents and his maternal grandparents being among the pioneers of the district. His mother was a member of the Edgar family. Mrs. Coulter’s maiden name was Christina Stevenson and she was united in marriage to Joseph Coulter on September 15th, 1887, in Owen Sound, the Rev. Mr. Scott officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Coulter have lived in Toronto practically all their married life. They have a family of three sons and three daughters, all of whom are joining in the celebration on Wednesday. The members of the family are J. Edgar, and Ernest D., both of Toronto, Harold of Hamilton, Miss Helen, at home, Isabel, Mrs. Ralph Horner of Ottawa, and Edna Loughlin of Toronto." Can anyone provide background information on the Coulter, Stevenson, or Edgar pioneer families of the Chatsworth/Owen Sound area? Many thanks, Raymond Marina
