I came across a couple statements that I would like to share with you: "There can be no alternative for a bricks-and mortar library, and the people on hand to help find a particular volume of reference. For all that is available on the world wide web, there is so much more that can be found in a good old-fashioned book." - Jay Underwood in Built for War: Canada's Intercolonial Railway "Nowadays with the internet and our discovery that so many wonderful things can be found in a few clicks, many researchers have forgotten that information of this kind (linguistic and geographical) may be found more quickly using a printed book and the results may be more trustworthy. The first act of some researchers who wonder "Where is Riding Mountain?" seems to be to type a query on their favourite discussion list. The answers received may simply be from the top of someone else's head, and equally misinformed. A quick trip to a gazetteer will provide a reliable answer." - Ryan Taylor in Canadian Archival Centres Mike More mikemore@rogers.com

Hi Pat I transcribed the Markdale Cemetery recently. There are some individual stones for the County Home section but many are without stones and you are right about him not having one, if he is there. I did however go to Grey Gables which is a new facility (a retirement lodge) and they have all the records for the House of Refuge. They were very willing to look up the ancestor in question and gave me the dates she entered and left, contacts for her, etc. There phone number is 519-986-3010. Hope this helps. Hello Pat While this reply isn't specifically about Markdale's House of Refuge, it might answer your question.... The House of Refuge in Wellington County, now the Wellington Co Museum & Archives, had its own cemetery. Unfortunately, probably due to the financial circumstances, there aren't any individual gravestones, but there is a memorial marker (erected in more recent history) in a stand of trees by the road where the inmates were buried. Markdale was actually the Grey County House of Refuge. In order to receive funding, the 'managers' had to have records that would include admissions and deaths. Perhaps the county archives will be able to help you in this regard http://www.greyroots.com/ Author Pat Mestern's book, "Anna, A child of the Poor House" is the fictional story of a child born and raised in the Wellington Co. House of Refuge, aka the poor house. Pat Mestern incorporates historical facts and you might enjoy the insights of poor house life even though it's not specifically of your research area. Hello list, I am researching my Harkless line and I have found some in Essex and Bruce counties, but when I look at the records, they seem to be Hartleys. My line of Andrew J. Harkless, married into the Maria/Mary Geunther/Ginther line in Grey County. They married in Illinois but her parents were George & Catherine (Wagner) Geunther from Germany to Canada. They are buried in a cemtery near Ayton. Have any of the newspapers around there been copied or indexed? Supposedly Andrew Harkless got in a fight while in Canada in the early 1880s, thought he killed a man and came back to the USA. I'd love to find out if this incident made the local papers. Thanks, Jan Illinois, USA

Hi Norma: If no one call help, go to the National Library of Canada web site search page at: http://search-recherche.collectionscanada.ca/amicus/search.jsp?Language=eng Type in only the word Dundalk and a number of books come up, including the cemetery transcript, item 8. Click on the title and the book comes up, copy and paste the full entry on to a blank piece of paper, print and take in to your local library where they can order the book on Inter Library Loan. Copy 2 can be borrowed. Marg nhaines wrote: > Hi Folks: > Can someone help me with a transcript of the Dundalk Cem? > According to the OCFA, Henry and Eva HUNKING are buried in the above > cem.
