    1. CRITCHLEY - Charleston, Sullivan Township
    2. The Irvings
    3. Hi, I have been helping my father- in law trace his Critchley Family in West Yorkshire, UK where the family became coal pit owners and with interests in the local woollen mills. he has in is possession an letter posted from Liverpool in 1848 to his mother stating he was about to embark on a ship to New York. Little more was know about Charles Critchley other than he had a town named after him called Charleston - somewhere in North America. For many years no progress was made. A couple of years ago I found reference to a Charles Critchley in the 1871 Ontario Census but how many more Charles Critchleys wee there across North America? Last week I searched the Mormons 1881 Canadian Census and 1880 USA Census which turned up only one Charles Critchley, born England abt 1820 - in Sullivan Township, Grey County - the same one as the 1871 Census. Yesterday I struck lucky when surfing the internet - there are some awesome Canadian sites - I wish we had comparable sites in the UK!! I found the McGill Univ digital Library and within minutes was holding a print of Charleston village and has a copy of the 1865 Grey County Directory which mentioned Charles as the Municipal Clerk and Treasurer and a magistrate (In England my father in laws ancestors were councillors, mayors and magistrates - it obviously runs in the blood.) Can anyone help me trace Charles (b1820), his wife Sarah born Ireland 1816 and daughter born 1856. Were there any other children. Was he buried in Charleston Cemy which I understand still exists (thank you again internet) but which hasn't been transcribed. I have a copy of Sullivan Township but cannot at the moment locate exactly where Charleston or the lake it was built beside. I know he had Concession 2 Lot C. Any help in tracing their descendants will be very gratefully received. John Irving in Leeds, West Yorks, UK PS if you have an interest in the name IRVING I may be able to help you - I run in all but name a one name study/ info exchange

    1. BRIDGET WRIGHT MASON - MEAFORD
    2. abellraven
    3. I am looking for connections to BRIDGET (nee LEPPARD) married to WILLIAM WRIGHT in 1885 in Markdale. In early 1900's her name appears on a letter as MRS. WM. WRIGHT MASON of MEAFORD. I would like to hear from anyone connected to this family. I have much to share with family members. We are descendants of JAMES and ROSEANN (nee O'MALLEY) LEPPARD/LEOPARD. Or if someone in the MEAFORD area can find a burial for BRIDGET MASON, that would be a help also. Hoping! April in BC (grand daughter of LOUISE LEAPARD)

    1. Kenny
    2. Lois Sparling
    3. I am researching Charles Kenny (1784 or possibly 1794 - 1864) and his wife Ann (1801 - 1869). They immigrated to Upper Canada from Ireland in 1835. Ann was a native of Co. Cavan. They settled first in Clarke Twp., Durham Co. and moved to Collingwood Twp., Grey Co. in 1848. Their eldest son, George Kenny, settled in EUphrasia Twp. in 1848. I do not have a maiden name for Ann. They were Wesleyan Methodists. Their children were: Isabella, Matilda, George, Margaret, Anne, Samuel, Sarah and Charles. Is anyone else researching this family? Lois Sparling Calgary, Alberta

    1. 1911 Census -- Census Petitions Needed
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- Signatures on census petitions continue to be needed as we hope for the release of 1911 records to assist genealogy. Both House of Commons and Senate petitions are needed http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm A person may sign both Canadian petitions, but follow instructions for the Non-Resident one, please. At present there is no census bill - but we hope the many letters might bring forth a government bill on our behalf. Tabulations as of Oct. 31, 2002 included:- British Columbia - 289; Alberta - 45; Saskatchewan - 47; Ontario - 224; Quebec - 40; Nova Scotia - 31; Total 676. Non-Resident total was 337, with some signed in Canada. It was great to see Family History Centres, LDS Centre, Ontario Genealogy Society plus Canadians at Dow Chemical in United States. We have two BHC petitions - many thanks! Just ask groups such as above -- all very helpful! Attachments are available in both English and French languages. Muriel M. 1. WAKEFIELD, WRIGHT
    2. Hello List, I am searching for an obituary for my great grandmother, Elizabeth Wakefield WRIGHT. She died in Durham April 14, 1900. She is buried in the Durham Cemetery. What would the newspaper have been called in 1900 and would there be microfilm or records, or perhaps an article on her since she and her husband were very prominent in Durham at that time. He owned the brickyard which sat directly across the street from the Durham Cemetery, at the present site of the Ontario Dept. of Highways. I would be interested in locating any local history books that might contain articles of them, Samuel and Elizabeth (Wakefield) WRIGHT. Are there any books available for sale that anyone knows of? I have a photocopy of an article, but do not have the book title. It appears to be a book regarding Durham, and I'm wondering if it is some kind of centennial book. The article is on page 135, there is a photo (poorly copied) of a group of men pressing bricks at Wright's brickyard. It mentions the brickyard was on H. Parker's farm in Bentinck twp. Any ideas or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jane Wright Johnston Kansas City Missouri USA

    1. Letter re VETERANS from Dr. Rey D. Pagtakhan, P.C., M.P.
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Crest Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development) Ottawa, Canada K1A 0P4 The Honourable Dr. Rey D. Pagtakhan, P.C., M.P. Mrs. Muriel Davidson 25 Crestview Avenue Brampton, Ontario L6W 2R8 Dear Mrs. Davidson:- Thank you for your e-mail message expressing your concerns regarding veteran status. The office of the Honourable John McCallum, Minister of National Defence, has also referred to me your e-mail message regarding the same matter. On March 29, 2001, it was announced that the Government of Canada would recognize as veterans former Canadian Forces personnel who fulfill the Department of National Defence's military occupational classification requirements and have been honourably released from the Forces. The qualification, commonly referred to as "MOC-qualified," equals about one year of service, and the definition also applies to Reserve Force members who meet certain service criteria. Veteran status effectively recognizes the potential risk to which all Canadian Forces members may be exposed when they swear the Oath of Allegiance and don a Canadian uniform. Both war veterans and Canadian Forces veterans have access to my Department's benefits and services, based on need or other defined eligibility criteria. We are committed to ensuring that current and former members of the Canadian Forces who are suffering from a service-related disability receive the disability pension and health care benefits to which they are entitled. If you would like to find out more about departmental benefits and services, I encourage you to visit our Web site at: www.vac-acc.gc.ca, I have also taken the liberty of enclosing two brochures which will tell you what is available through my Department. While the Privacy Act prevents me from discussing individual cases, like that of your brother, I encourage all veterans to contact the nearest Veterans Affairs District Office to determine their eligibility for departmental benefits and services. I was pleased to learn that your husband is receiving excellent care at the Sunnybrook Veterans' Wing. Nothing less is acceptable for those who served so well. In closing, I want to commend you for your wartime work as a Code Talker. Many lives may have been saved through your willingness to serve. Again, thank you for writing. Sincerely [Signature] Hon. 1. RE: cemeteries in Proton?
    2. Glen Johnson
    3. If you go to the Historic Atlas site: http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/CountyAtlas/ then you can do a search on townships and pick Proton (give it time to complete downloading). You can also search for people, but if you ancestor is not mentioned in the atlas, he wont be found. When you request the map, a map will download and it usually has on it the names of occupants at the time of the map - I see that Proton has no names - probably settled later. There are also numbers along the edge of the map to give the lot and concession numbers (these latter usually in roman numerals). As I see it, there is a church right beside them and the Post Office right across the road. Given this map and the current road map, I could drive right to the place - I have done that with Caledon Township. -----Original Message----- From: Colleen Andrews [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, October 29, 2002 10:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: cemeteries in Proton? If anyone has any information on Christina McGillvray, please let me know. I couldn't find the marriage of Alexander & Christina in any of the York County Indexes to Marriages. I found an Alexander McQUARRIE on Lot 18, Conc 9 Vaughan Twp. in the Directory for York Co. 1850. Also on Lot 18, Conc 9 Vau. Twp. in 1850 was Neil McGillivray and Janet McEachern. I don't know if there is a connection with the above Christina McGilvray or not. I would be pleased to hear from anyone with a connection to this family. I can then pass it on to Ethel Walkington. I also have the address of Darlene McQuarrie of Yorkton, SK who sent this genealogy to Ethel Walkington. Regards Anne Stevens Newmarket, Ont.

    1. Post 1901 Census - Petition Totals PLUS Important Information
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. A bit long -- but very important - Muriel M. Davidson --------------------- Greetings All I have just finished collating the petitions for the House of Commons that I have received since 23 February 2002. The break down is as follows: Province Previous Current Total ============================== BC 2724 162 2886 AB 5422 348 5770 SK 840 236 1076 MB 447 26 473 ON 2950 922 3872 PQ 807 178 985 NB 541 30 571 NS 745 269 1014 PE 99 0 99 NF 260 0 260 YT 7 0 7 NT 0 0 0 NUN 0 0 0 =============================== Totals 14842 2171 17013 I will be presenting these 2171 signatures to MP Murray Calder while I am in the Ottawa area to attend the first symposium for the Canadian Genealogy Center at the end of the month. Senator Lorna Milne has, as of 8 October 2002, presented 20,109+ Canadian and Non-Resident signatures on petitions to the Senate since the election of November 2000. Prior to the election she had presented more than 6000 signatures. This brings the total number of signatures on our petitions alone, since the November 2000 federal election, to 37,122+ Add to this figure the estimated 16,000 signatures on petitions, letters and email to MPs, and submissions to the Expert Panel on Access of Historical Census Records sent prior to the election of November 2000, we achieve a total of 59,122+ signatures sent to Ottawa. This figure does not include additional unknown numbers of signatures on letters and email sent prior to, or following the November 2000 election, or on petitions not directed through either myself or Muriel before or since that election. Neither does it include signatures on petitions that may have been sent by groups other than the Canada Census Committee. We have no means of tracking numbers of letters or email sent. The announcement on 3 October 2002 that the government intends to bring down legislation relating to public access of Historic Census records does not mean that our efforts are finished. It remains to be seen if such legislation will meet the needs and concerns of those seeking such access. We must keep on top of things to ensure that it does.. We continue to have a need for signatures on petitions. Without knowing the numbers of letters and email sent to individual MPs and Senators, signatures on petitions are the only thing we can point to to show support for our objective. PLEASE send your petitions through Muriel and myself. We are aware of petitions that have been sent directly to some MPs and Senators that have not been presented to their respective Houses. Signatures on these petitions are lost to us. Petitions sent through us are assured of being presented. We need also, to continue seeking support from those MPs and Senators that have given non-committal responses or who have not responded to our questions. Check the Scoreboards on the Post 1901 Census Project website, at the URL following my signature for the tally of MPs and Senators, and their stated positions. With the award today, of a gold tick of support to MP Joe Jordan, 165 MPs have to date stated their support for access to these records so vital to the interests of genealogists and historians. 37 Senators have similarly shown their support. If your own MP or Senator is one of those who do not currently have a gold tick of support, send them a brief, polite request for that support. Remind them that what we seek is public access to Census Records after 1901 on exactly the same basis as we currently have for 235 years of Census records up to 1901. Happy Hunting Gordon A.
